#26 Re: Terraformation » Solarised Trade and Infrastructure. » 2008-04-12 14:06:37

I personally belive this is the most plausible idea, i know most bodies beside 2 clear candidates will not be terraformed at alll, instead habitads complexes and industrial infrastructure will build around/within them.

for example there are asteroids that could support a few thousand to a few million people with the right infrastructure, some of this asteroids also cross the orbits of a few planets that could make them trasport ferries where goods, resources and small space crafts without/limited ability for interplanetary travel could be transported while their crew stays in the asteroid settlement underground where they will enjoy their stay or trade with locals or others safe from radiation.

It's simple: No War No Fun.

Well it depends, do you like more RP or Worldbuilding,

Umm yeah, im a member of OA and if youd like tp join you are welcome (Although no FTL in the setting, sorry).

Still this year the joke was a bit more sophisticated and with the help of you tube we could see how baddly people fell for it.

#32 Re: Life support systems » Toilet Systems » 2008-04-08 03:41:16

I think Squat toilets would be adequate for mars, they require less space and that same space can double as a shower, they can be easly made, even more than than normal toilets.

#33 Re: Civilization and Culture » Artist in residence. » 2008-04-06 13:36:50

Well being a artist oo i agree.

But it wont happen in the first mission.

#34 Re: Civilization and Culture » Artist in residence. » 2008-04-06 04:49:43

That maybe a bit hopeful, unless he/she as another more vital role in the mission.

#35 Re: Life support systems » Light bulbs » 2008-04-06 04:29:38

Sorry - what's QFT?

Anyway, I am guessing that LED involves quite advanced manufacturing techniques.

On Mars we want to start with fairly simple manufacture.

But if you can convince me LED is  simpler to manufacture than the traditional light bulb then I'll put it on the list!

Well not really, they are quite simple and woud require just about the same mass in equipment.

Perhaps it's one of God's booby traps and explains why SETI has been so unsuccessful to date: perhaps all previous civilisations in the cosmos have stumbled into this and other booby traps.

Im sorry but thats not quite right to agree as fact or even speculation.

They might infact be quite good resources in the future.

#37 Re: Intelligent Alien Life » Candor Chasma » 2008-04-05 17:17:34

I dunno the circular bits and their location looks like a cute mole like creature  wink

But the mole its just a optical/mind concoction.

#38 Re: Not So Free Chat » Has Multiculturalism Failed ? » 2008-04-04 15:40:56

And thats whats seems to happen when you fight fire with fire (by the way im christian, well non-practising)

#39 Re: Not So Free Chat » Has Multiculturalism Failed ? » 2008-04-04 15:02:27

Multiculturalism hasn't failed, it just hasn't been implemented properly.

For a multicultural society groups have to learn to compromise, but although most do compromise by accepting each others some dont, for example i find frustrating that some (not all) Muslims think multiculturalism is us obeying their rules other wise its discriminating them (eg: don't drink, don't wear short dresses, etc) and they don't believe anti discrimination works both ways and demand respect but don't give it themselves to all other cultures that deviate from the Islamic ideal and shun those cultures (by country or religion) or sexual orientation.

It just has to be understood by all parties involved that respect is both and all ways no matter how immoral you think they are and express no discrimination, and sometimes just to downplay somethings others find uncomfortable and try to experience the other cultures themselves (both ways).

Yeah, the question is, why do we tolerate that kind of intolerant behavior?

But you dont fight fire with fire.

there are more ways of managing that than being antagonistic.

#41 Re: Intelligent Alien Life » A puzzling question! » 2008-04-04 04:14:45

I've seen pics of Mars where people claim to see pine forests and all the rest.

Strange though, isn't it, that we keep landing in places where there is rocky desert with no signs of vegetation.

Lol

#42 Re: Intelligent Alien Life » Why No Contact Yet ? » 2008-04-04 04:02:05

Or maybe they might not be as adnced as us, and any alien civ within our historic radio sphere could just be developing still

Maybe we and another advanced civilization will notice each other once their radio signals reach us, in any case there arent any within 100 lights years so far.

Who knows ther might be many life bearing and habitable planets in our galaxy but only a hand full of intelligent civilizations spread out in it.

#43 Re: Intelligent Alien Life » Phoenix landing site images » 2008-04-03 02:57:59

I am sorry I seem to have bored some people with the findings of my visual research, but researching the images is what I am interested in. In posting some images on the forum I was hoping in doing so may have stirred and encouraged some scientific debate. It would appear to me that no one believes what they see until it is handed to them on a plate!

I believe the entry and landing sequence of the Phoenix mission will go perfectly. The crucial phase of the mission will be the last twenty feet. If a descent camera is going to be used, it will be interesting to see the images sent back as well as the images of the surface terrain.

Zydar

LOL  big_smile

Yeah we might see some cities and tiny green men. big_smile

Yeah i know, some people.

They should read more and be more realistics.

Its soooooooooooooooooooo unlikely its gonna kill.

#45 Re: Human missions » The Water Tent - radiation protection » 2008-04-03 01:02:18

There are mny types with different freezing points.

#46 Re: Human missions » The Water Tent - radiation protection » 2008-04-02 14:10:10

The water could be doped with antifreeze to preent it frezzing.

#48 Re: Human missions » Typology of colonisation plans. » 2008-04-02 02:54:56

Well many people think of the "rome in a day" for a predominant reason, they want deep down to build their own nation (including me).

#49 Re: Human missions » Crater colony » 2008-04-02 02:51:32

Just had a thought.  They are looking into cold plasma magnetic shielding for shielding space craft from radiation.  Would this same technolgy work on a planatary level, not the entire planet, but on the planet?

Also, with the dome you are talking about here. I remember reading that article on the electrostatic "shield" when it came out and I had a similar idea come to mind as you--though your drawings almost bring it to life.  Question for you though. Could you use areo-gel between the membranes? It would allow light, and radient heat, to pass through but would keep the cold out.  Or over that big of an area, would the addittion of it be too heavy?

It can work over the whole planet if you where to add a sphere like network with the planet within (it works in the vaccum).

Second question, i think a gel would be far to heavy, the thin aluminium strips (foil like) would be lighter over all.

#50 Re: Human missions » Virgle Announced! Google and Virgin announce Mars Mission. » 2008-04-01 05:33:14

This is quite odd indeed.

It seems wrong, i cant help feeling in a negative way towards that proyect, im not ready for a corporate body taking a nations role (not getting there but managing the colony)
