This action was already completed later today. It was successful and Spirit is doing well. The rover is full ready for explorations!

This color issue really confuses me. What shoul I belive? Spirit's pictures or ME pictures? sad

#28 Re: Unmanned probes » Huygens Probe to Titan » 2004-02-04 05:40:47

Also there are difficulties to fund missions like Europa Orbiter or Europa Lander (submarine smile). And I think Europa is more interesting and of more importance.
So, alas, Titan must wait. If we only had more funds for space exploration!  sad

They really do. But another explanation is possible too. Like volcanic particles or so.
But any microorganism fossils are welcome smile.

According to nav images Opportunity really goes toward 'the strange thing'. But nothing more is visible neither in nav images nor hazcam images. And also nobody implies anything about plans to examine it.
Actually it's a coincidence that the rover started in this direction. However when it is there, why not take a cheap look smile.

#31 Re: Unmanned probes » Spirit & Opportunity *3* - ...continued from previous threads » 2004-02-03 01:31:16

Usually I'm not any fan of 'strange things visible in the pic'. But the leaf thing in the pan image really looks strange. Definitely no rock. It may be a part of the lander, but there are no track of impact around it... so how did it get there? Very strange indeed - I would send the rover to examine that!

#32 Re: Unmanned probes » Spirit & Opportunity *3* - ...continued from previous threads » 2004-02-02 08:51:19

I have found the rock "Blanco" in the pan images (the next potential target of Spirit), but where is "Cake"?

#33 Re: Unmanned probes » Spirit & Opportunity *3* - ...continued from previous threads » 2004-01-30 03:41:07

No, I'm not, that's just my opinion smile.
Seriously: I think that everything interesting in the crate was already shown in particular images (not pan). Other interesting datas from the crater will be available when the rover moves toward the rock outcrop.

#34 Re: Unmanned probes » Spirit & Opportunity *3* - ...continued from previous threads » 2004-01-30 03:30:34

I think Opportunity's full res pan is not so interesting. The lander is in a crater (or a depression) with its rims only about 10m away - what will we see? Let's wait with pan images until the rover crawl out smile.

60W on a light bulb means, that this bulb consumes 60Wh [Watt-hour] per hour.

#36 Re: Unmanned probes » Spirit & Opportunity 2 - Continued from original thread » 2004-01-26 06:55:34

According to the descet images: Can anyone identify the crater, in(to? ech, my English smile) which Opportunidy landed?

#37 Re: Unmanned probes » Which Mars site has you more interested? - Gusev Crater or Meridiani Planum » 2004-01-26 03:20:52

I vote for Gusev. It may be scientifically less interesting, but it has more interesting landscape (for a laic like me). I'm really eager to see the southeast hills more closely! I hope Spirit will be OK.
However, Opportunity's land side is interesting as well, there is no doubt!

Who was offended by the comentary at NASA Watch yesterday?
Well, read this: [http://www.spacedaily.com/news/beagle2-04a.html]http://www.spacedaily.com/news/beagle2-04a.html.

The only think I can agree with this article is the fact, that cheap missions have less chance to succeed. The rest is a flush of bitter shits and the autor should wash his keyboard!

That Spirits travel plan is fascinating. Just where I wanted Spirit to go! And the view of horizont with labels - great! I must be dreaming!
I can't stay calm waiting for Spirit to reach that distance. (well it would be definitely a BAD luck for me to be hit by a car tommorow  )

#41 Re: Unmanned probes » Spirit & Opportunity 2 - Continued from original thread » 2004-01-13 05:08:26

to remcook:
Yes, the marks seem to be from bouncing. Moreover I think that some NASA experts acknowledged it.

#42 Re: Unmanned probes » Spirit & Opportunity » 2004-01-08 01:50:53

According to Jim Bell, the camera's developer, the southeast hills are about 2 km far and they are considered to be a potential drive target.

WOW! smile

#43 Re: Unmanned probes » Spirit & Opportunity » 2004-01-07 08:39:17

Yes, but horizont toward the mountains must be closer. The mountains are about 3 or 4 km far.

#44 Re: Unmanned probes » Spirit & Opportunity » 2004-01-07 07:23:48

That's also my opinion.

According to my (very humble) estimation, the mountains should not be farther than 3 or 4 km. Since their tops are visible, the horizont must be much closer, probably not more than 1 km.

#45 Re: Unmanned probes » Spirit & Opportunity » 2004-01-07 07:07:53

I think that they won't stop operations. 90 days is only estimated lifetime of MERs. Because of decreasing power from solar panels and because of inconvenient position of Mars to Sun (control room will not be able to communicate with MERs at that time). After that the connection may reestablish, but MERs probably won't survive so long.

eeeh... sorry for my English, I speak like a bushman smile

#46 Re: Unmanned probes » Spirit & Opportunity » 2004-01-07 06:46:21

MERs are able to go up to 40m per day. So, considering 90 days of operations, they can reach more than 3.5km from the landing site. But they won't go straight. They will traverse from rock to rock instead.
What do you think - how far can Spirit get from the landing site?
To be honest: I would like Spirit to reach the mountains on the southeast (not their tops or slopes of course). That would provide us with really spectacullar views! Alas, I know it's a wishfull thinking...
