The area Phoenix will land is even more exciting because of observed thermal swings just south of the ice pack.
Most people believe that Mars is a bitter cold place were temperatures never climb near the freezing point of pure water. I about fell out of my chair when the 2 year thermal data set was released by the rover team showing temps approaching +95F or +37C at both rover locations.
The Mars Odyssey thermal IR imaging showed temperatures in this area could reach 0C or +32F just off the ice pack . Now what makes this interesting is surface ice at and near the surface.
The count down to landing continues.

Andrew.
Now I am not defending Earth type structures or biology in those images but the truth is we cant make anything out less than 3 ft.
I do consider myself well versed in Mars weather. The thin atmosphere is strange with large differences in the temperature just off the surface. We have seen water ice melt on Earth on a sunny day with temps of -10c due to solar energy on a dark surface.
Surface temps can reach 0c or 32f just off the ice pack or that is what this data says. Strange place Mars
Now we all seen this image on the News this week. It is a color image taken from Earth orbit. When they get to Mars they cant get the filters lined up or they left one at home.
Go figure.
Phoenix will bring back Bio testing to the Martian surface since Viking over 30 years ago.
Oh, the possibilities. Mr. Hawking spoke this week about life in the cosmos. I am in complete agreement. Hope we find some critters.

Zydar,
I just don’t get it brother. I am a plain English guy. Solarized? What has the sun got to do with it?
Vincent
This is Dana’s image above.
You got you a real scientist. Talk to him

Come back to reality. Joseph P Skipper is an idiot. He takes things in reality and goes overboard.
Calm down son and learn the truth.

Post of Dana’s image above
Nothing like I have seen before. My question is I understand change of color and contrast will affect the image as far as detail. I wonder if the relief is affected as well.
Good to have you here old friend.

Hello, Danajohnson, and welcome back. I did run across your post from a few years ago. More going on here than at the Blog. I have read a lot of your material and believe you have great insight.
Hope you post a lot of your interpretations of surface features here.
In honor of your return I will post one of my favorite Dana Johnson images form the Utopia region I believe.
PS:
Have not run across any hardcore rock people here but they will come. As far as location I believe it was smooth landing vs. anything else. Age of the ejecta blanket and depth could alter the prime environmental area as far as the current hydro cycle and any past or current microbial or alien life forms.
Dana wrote:
While ejecta debris will give better current ice retention, and deeper material in part, will the source as an impact, 'sanitize' the debris, reduce the surface ice, and provide a closed door to the original unaltered material sampling?
Fire and ice for sure. That is a possibility. It has been debated. Lets hope the microscopic imager picks up anything of interest that is killed or altered. If water ice is close to the surface then melting altering and maybe even a closed door for sure. We got what we got. Viking did pick up some activity after a rocket landing.

I believe they do, Mars is a strange place indeed. It is of course my opinion.
To be sure, it is entirely possible that liquid water can exist at the surface ephemerally under rare conditions when atmospheric pressure and surface temperature line up. Unfortunately, the places where this is most likely to occur are also most likely dessicated for the very same reasons.
Well in regard to pressure the rovers were not equipped with any meteorlogical equipment so pressures are not known. Pathfinder never had any pressures below 6.1 millibars and if topography is any indication then the area where Oppy landed is in the topographic area for these pressures to be even higher.
As far as why these areas are desiccated for the very same reasons I have no idea what you are talking about. Maybe you can explain.
As far as the MRO and Mars express I would love to get some links to those reports.
Thanks,
Vincent
It may just be a dust puddle.
Belinda,
Glad to talk. I can get deep.
Vincent
Belinda,
Hoax is a word us Mars forum guys throw around. We look for the truth. The truth is what I said.
Why the call it the green valley is why I said. Why they want to tease the public maybe that would be another thread.
The public will not always have Vincent. I call the cowards out.

Yes Belinda.
Green valley is a hoax. That was a area void of boulders in whitch they call the green area to land..

Zydar,
I do not mean to be a prick. The reality is if Man was wiped out due to whatever, the Earth would wipe his residue off the surface.
If Mars ever had a civilization we will only find it in fossils buried deep.
I am open but not stupid.
Vincent
Why are the colors of Mars important?
We have human eyes. Colors tells us what things are in our environment necessary for our survival. We do not see the Earth as a Fly does.
Now for what ever reason the color issue goes on. I thought they were just too smart to take a color image of Mars. On the same line as, “They are so smart they are stupid.”
This has been said about me.
But the seeps and gullies have been a focal point for current surface eruptions.
If it is a dry slide we get a grayscale like image one.
When it is a gully like the image I posted with obvious residual or post chemical moisture related surface change or maybe a current event it is, “Cartoon time,” as in image two.

What else could they be?

Most likely they are rocks. The chances of the being anything else is 1 in 23,345,237,856,239,556.0000000003

What makes you think it was unintentional, man does not live by air and food alone.

Terraforming is an unpractical waste of resources. All humans have to is subsist from the resources that are available in the solar system in sustainable and rational way. All we need is enough water to drink, enough air to breate, enough food to sustain
Well that may work for you but I want some cable TV, Internet without a 6 minute click delay and beer. And girls, lots of girls.
