#29951 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » STOP PRESS: Scaled announce launch date » 2004-09-13 09:06:44

That is big news for scale composite but it is also an awakening of Nasa to not always do if it is not invented here we do not care approach. One can only hope that this is successful and that more of this continues with Nasa.

We have heard all of these same old arguments for not doing space but they are wrong...

Marketing space to the general public
Efforts to win greater support for space exploration among the general public have largely failed. Jeff Krukin believes that advocates can do a better job making space relevant to the average person.

Instead, they fight against our tired and dated pro-space arguments with their tired and dated anti-space arguments, such as:

We need to solve our problems here first
Space is too dangerous and expensive
Space is a pristine environment and humans will only ruin it
No nuclear power in space
No property ownership in space

Why has this happened, and what must we understand to effectively market space to the general public?

Property rights an article on space review as always very informative.

Races, beauty contests, franchises, and build-out requirements for lunar property
Lunar property rights are a critical ingredient to successful governance of the Moon. Sam Dinkin makes the case for using auctions, rather than races or lotteries, to assign those rights.

Most of the G forces are a part of the burn speed and duration. There is on going military research into lower burn rates for solids. Adding none fuel agents that just burn would be a way to tame it down but the length of the segments would most likely need to be increased. Also changing the diameter to one that is smaller would have a simular effect.
I am wondering what effect of changing the output nozzle would have if it were an areospike style?

#29955 Re: Human missions » Post central for information on CEV 2 - ...continue here. » 2004-09-13 07:27:36

Well this weeks the space review has the same graphics displayed.

CEV: a different approach
Conventional wisdom has NASA’s new Crew Exploration Vehicle being launched by an EELV. Jeff Foust reports that some people within and outside of NASA are promoting an alternative to the EELV based on an element of the space shuttle program.

#29956 Re: Human missions » How to lower launch costs - Calling our techie gurus. . . » 2004-09-13 07:22:13

You forgot on the RLV side the refurb cost of tile replacement, systems upgrades and or part replacements do to being broken or worn out.

#29957 Re: Human missions » Space Initive Launch Vehicle » 2004-09-13 07:19:03

TSTO spaceplane technology checklist:

-Composit fuel tankage - Mature/Prototype by MSFC etc
-LOX-boosted turbine engines - Prototyped, F-15 engine modified and ground tested
-Large reuseable LOX/LH2 engine - Development by P&W
-Metal heat shield materials - Prototyped and flight tested on STS
-Lift body design - Prototyped by Russia, X-38 ACRV, various ground tests and confirmed modeling

-NASA experience with spaceplanes of high complexity - 20+ years and counting
-Computer modeling and design now common
-Composits, ceramics, metal alloys, engineering polymers, etc have advanced considerably since the Shuttle days

It is great to see the shopping list for the new more advanced RLV spaceplane.

But If we are going to try the Metal heat shield materials - Prototyped and flight tested on STS Why then bother to retire them once this is done. Most of the shuttles refurb cost are tile replacements.

#29958 Re: Human missions » More ISS hardball - How does this affect US vision? » 2004-09-13 07:11:12

Why is there no secondary backup unit on board for such a critical item?

#29959 Re: Human missions » The need for a Moon direct - and sustainabilty program » 2004-09-12 20:23:08

I keep thinking about the term infrastucture but all I come up with are water, food, air, power, and materials to construct with. Each we can calculate based on currrent uses from the ISS for the given crew size. Scale to size that to which would be sent to Mars for more exact numbers for each.

#29960 Re: Human missions » More ISS hardball - How does this affect US vision? » 2004-09-12 20:19:10

Yup you are right re-read at the bottom of the article about the redesigned and of an American design in the works but 4 years plus before it will be available down from the 6.

The new devices will not use the liquid-gel electrolyte system that has led to all previous units eventually breaking down. Instead, they will rely on a solid polymer electrolyte.

With Nasa budget issues I thing that the later date is more the target rather than the shorter one.

Design of such a device is a must for long duration flight to mars.

Question for ISS unit, What is being done with the extra Hydrogen given off by the current units, Is it being collected and reused as well? Also how much over the period of time of operation is available for other uses?

#29961 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » Exoplanet imaged?! » 2004-09-10 20:08:31

I had found this info earlier today but had posted this under the exoplanet anouncement. I think this is the same one also.
Photo may be first of extrasolar planet
A group of European-led astronomers has made a photograph of what appears to be a planet orbiting another star. If so, it would be the first confirmed picture of a world beyond our solar system.

A very long way to nudge an icy body it really needs to be more of a stoney one though to do what you are thinking of. But maybe multiple ones would do even if they are small ones. Maybe some of the other near earth objects would fill in for the icy jupiter body instead.

#29963 Re: Human missions » Space Initive Launch Vehicle » 2004-09-10 19:49:39

Same concept was used by the SpaceShipOne xprize contestant. It does make sense but for only LEO crew carrier but probably would not be of benifit for cargo. Simular principles are being also used with the scramjet technology demostrator as well just with an extra boost stage to get it to mach 6.

#29964 Re: Human missions » China The Dominant Superpower In 20 Years..... - What does this mean for US? » 2004-09-10 19:42:14

I think one of the problems was the need for super conducting electrical wires to get the magnetic field strength high enough to make it propel fast enough.

#29965 Re: Human missions » The need for a Moon direct - and sustainabilty program » 2004-09-10 19:33:45

The problem with individuals or medium sized corporations is not whether they can achieve success in actually getting into space or for even staying a short while, It is paying for what is needed for them to survive once they are there. Self suffieciency is the only answer to that senerio for those that I have discribed. But for Governments that is not the case at all, what is needed for that is continual funding and a belief that the money has been spent wisely.

#29966 Re: Human missions » NDSS National Department of Space Settlement - We've explored, now let's occupy! » 2004-09-10 19:25:25

But with the UN as the seat of power I feel that we will have the same problems as we do today with America for the most part becoming the police force of the world with resistance from the UN when it comes to enforcement for crimes committed by other nation. I May be wrong but that is how it seems.

#29967 Re: Human missions » More ISS hardball - How does this affect US vision? » 2004-09-10 19:19:23

It is to bad that all we seem to be doing is fixing the equipment that breaks, replacing it on the next progress or shuttle rather than redesigning what seems to be the problem and ending the degrading before it can continue to be big problems with all the partners.

Quite the feat for these Engineer to Build a Robot That Walks on Water, The  prototype shows how important lighter and stronger materials have been to robotics.

One mans garbage is another mans treasure. It is all based on need or sometimes greed but not to mention resourcefulness of the would be treasure trove hunter to create something that can be sold for cash from another mans trash.

#29973 Re: Human missions » The need for a Moon direct - and sustainabilty program » 2004-09-10 10:02:35

Most towns and city have a theft law since it is considered the individuals until hauled by the removal service and only at that point if not a town service it is the companies that provided the pickup.

Some one leaving clothes at a salvation army bin if another picks up those from near or in the bin is charge with theft since it is on the salvation armies property once placed.

#29974 Re: Human missions » The need for a Moon direct - and sustainabilty program » 2004-09-10 09:37:07

Well that also assumes lawfull ownership by nations to all hardware ever brought there by that particular nation. Russia mught not like it if we were to play salvage with ther stuff and I am sure the same would hold true for Nasa with all the apollo flags and foot prints, ect... However possesion out there would probably 9 tenths of the law but when and if you returned you might face charges if laws were passed against it. What is ownership? In space is a very tricky issue that needs better definitions IMO....

That is the whole senerio that all the Xprize contestants are going though. It is not a pretty sight, with the mounds of paper and regulations to go though.
