President George W. Bush says it's important to have a free press: 'Power can be very addictive'
Bush calls for answers on possible connections between Russia and Trump campaign
Bush said he supports an investigation that explores possible links between Russia and the Trump campaign.
“I think we all need answers,” Bush told Matt Lauer.Bush defends the media as a check on "addictive" power
Bush critiqued Trump’s feud with the media, calling it “indispensable to democracy.”
“Power can be very addictive. And it can be corrosive. And it's important for the media to call to account people who abuse their power.”
The Media did not put a check on Obama's power when he was President! The Media did not hold Obama to account at all! So why the difference between the Media's behavior with Obama and then Trump? The main thing is the Media put Obama in the white house, it didn't matter what Obama did in the past, the Media just ignored it! the problem with a free media is that its unbalanced, and it allowed to get its way, it would lead to one party rule of this country. The President could then murder somebody and the News Media would not report on it, because it would be their guy doing the murdering! So here is what Trump needs to do, he needs to rebalance the media so the next election is more fair, as it is not now. ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN need to be balanced out by other networks on the opposite side of the political spectrum, right now there is only Fox News, we need to grow others! That is why Trump is not letting CNN into his press conferences. If the Media is not fair, then neither is the political process! We can't have a media that is mostly under the control of on party!

Choose Your News: How Viewers of Different News Outlets See Trump
The proliferation of media outlets has long meant that, with the click of a remote control or a mouse, Americans can choose their news.
In the Trump era, that means that different media consumers are experiencing different realities when it comes to the presidency and the state of the country.
The data show that viewers of different media outlets often had wildly divergent views of the president's job performance, the state of the country, the wisdom of various policy proposals and the bias of the media itself.Plenty of alternative facts and poll charts.....
Spicer: 'We did our job' by arranging pushback against Russia reports Sean Spicer questioned over WH role in knocking down reports of Trump campaign ties to Russia.
Top House Republican hasn't seen 'evidence' of Trump-Russia contacts
Schiff said it was “completely inappropriate” for the White House to ask CIA officials and Republican members to knock down the report from The New York Times and that anyone receiving that request “should politely decline.”
Trump has repeatedly derided the story as "fake news."
Trump's choice for Navy secretary withdraws
President Donald Trump's choice for secretary of the Navy, businessman Philip Bilden, said Sunday he was withdrawing from consideration for the post, citing concerns about privacy and separating himself from his business interests.
Bilden's withdrawal raises similar issues to that of Vincent Viola, Trump's nominee for Army secretary who stepped aside earlier this month. Just last week, the Pentagon sought to tamp down reports that Bilden might pull out.
Terraformer wrote:Behaviourism was discredited a long time ago, and good riddance to it.
Terraformer: The people of “Comunidad de los Horcones” (State of Sonora, Mexico) are living proof that the members of a human society can apply behavior shaping techniques to each other and thereby build a very prosperous and peaceful community. That community was founded in 1971 and it is still operating today. Los Horcones is based on B. F. Skinner’s utopian novel Walden Two.
In most Western societies, children are told that they are inhabited by an entity (a supernatural soul or a metaphysical mind) that has a characteristic called “free will” and that society therefore has the right to reward some behaviors and to punish other behaviors. That system of social control has worked for many centuries but it is based on a fairy story (a lie).
This is the 21st century and it is time to tell children the truth: (1) The doctrine of free will is an ideology, not a scientific theory; and (2) The members of a human society can use behavior shaping techniques to create and maintain a peaceful and prosperous society.
Mars should have a constitution based on science, not on superstition and metaphysical mumbo jumbo. I believe that Thomas Jefferson would agree.
If you want to turn humans into programmable robots, why not just use robots in the first place?
How did you get on to cannibalism? lol
I don't think we have much to fear from that.
But in terms of founding a libertarian community, that will be nigh on impossible in my view. Take one of the simplest of liberties - the right to walk out of your residence and move around your country...that "right" will not exist on Mars because it cannot, it would be way too dangerous to give individuals control over entering and exiting the base. This is because the life support systems are delicate and living in a pressurised environment means that without strict observance of rules, everyone's life is in danger. It's somewhat analogous to being on a plane...you don't have the liberty to try and exit the cabin and your rights are severely restricted.
Of course, things may change as the colony grows. I think Musk's "homesteader" vision is naive at this stage but ultimately it may prove doable. People may be able to purchase "life support system" packages that give them the freedom to set up their own residences anywhwere on the planet. But for at least the first few decades, this is going to be a very rule-bound community operating in a co-ordinated and collectivist manner under the overall direction of a commander or a small board of directors.
It's not going to be the Wild West. It's going to be a cross between an Antarctic base, a university campus and a factory.
So basically you are saying the colonists will be prisoners. Well if we're going in that direction, why not just set up a penal colony? So are you saying life support systems can't be mass produced in factories at low cost?
Tom, yes, a ring world is something that could be tried. However, I might consider it to be vandalism, depending on the natures of the 7 or more ~Earth sized worlds. Even if their natures are in general requiring terraforming, I would think quite a long time before tearing them apart to make a Ring World, which by it's nature would not be as enduring as the 7 or more worlds.
A ringworld around Trappist-1 would be 3,436,932 kilometers in radius. If we made it 12,800 kilometers wide, the area of a cylinder of the same height as Earth from pole to pole is the same as a sphere the size of Earth. The circumference of Earth is 40,212 km, the Circumference of a ringworld that is 3,436,932 km in radius is 21,594,881, that is 537 times the circumference of the Earth, therefore it is 537 times the surface area of the Earth, For comparison, Saturn has 95 times the surface area of the Earth, if you could live on its cloud tops. So roughly it would have the surface area of 5.3 Saturns! You are not going to get that if you leave them as planets. Also the planets are tidally locked, only a small area of each planet, if any would be habitable for humans, the rest would be too cold or too hot. We could regulate the temperature of the ringworld through shading and active refrigeration, something we can't as easily do with a planet. But a ringworld has a lot of surface area compared to its mass to radiate heat from.
Capitalism is the key, if we can reuse the vehicles that get us into space, that will bring down the costs to that of fuel and maintenance of the ships. SpaceX made a start by landing its boosters, if the boosters can be reused, that the company the cost of manufacturing a new booster, this will allow SpaceX to reap huge profits thus drawing in competitors, once competitors are in the market they will bid down the cost of travel into space.
Just so you know, Donald Trump is not Nixon. Unlike Nixon, Trump would know better than to try what Nixon did. Nixon thought he could get away with the same shenanigans that John F. Kennedy did, he assumed the Media was fair and impartial, so he thought to play by the same rules that JFK did, he was wrong, he got caught, and he resigned before Congress could impeach him. Trump, on the other hands knows from the outset, that he is dealing with a hostile press, he is a fairly intelligent man, I don't think he will make the same mistake that Nixon did. Unlike most other Presidents, Trump wears his ego on his sleeve, a return to the Moon would put him on par with JFK, so why wouldn't he do that?

Make America Great Again!
I remember first learning about Apollo when it was over and done with, I just missed it, the President that made this happen was Lyndon B Johnson, the very next Democrat in the Oval Office was a huge disappointment, that would be Jimmy Carter! Jimmy Carter it seemed did not want to make America Great Again, he refused to go back to the Moon as we did with Johnson and Nixon, he was just a muddle through President, who sought not to achieve greatness at all! It was during his Administration that Skylab crashed down around Australia. There were delays and delays with the Shuttle.
It would be more feasible to build a ringworld around this star with seven solid worlds to build from, the habitable zone is much closer to the star, there would be less stress on the ringworld due to centrifugal force, and some of the planet's mass could be used to build a track that an inner ringworld could spin around on. Shadow squares even closer to the primary could provide a regular 24-hor day night cycle. This would be easier to build with this system, than a Niven style ringworld around a G-class star. prior to that, we could still use shadow squares, but in this case to shadow an entire planet. This would tend to bring the habital zone closer if we did that!
The surprising thing is that dim stars have narrow habitable zones, so I'm surprised that you can fit three Earth sized planets in them. The planets would be very close together, you could see one planet from the surface of another, and they won't appear as bright stars, but as worlds just like the Moon as seen from Earth. These planets would gravitationally affect each other too. The tidal forces should be fairly significant, both from the other planets and the fact that these planets would tug each other out of circular orbits, this would change the tidal forces from the central star as the distance changes, you would get the "Io effect" from that! Since all thes planets in close proximity would rule out circular orbits, then the planets cannot be completely tidally locked with their primary either! There are places on the planet where the star would rise and set, bobbing up and down over the same place on the horizon. Volcanoes would be quite prevalent I think, the oceans would tend to rise and set, probably all that volcanic activity would heat up the ocean on the dark side preventing it frm completely freezing.
The town hall meeting were filled with professional and democrats not republicans as was hope is the alternative fact being given by Trump for the out comes from them. All I have is that these are the tough questions that both side of the aisle want answers too... Metairie, Louisiana, At A Town Hall, Constituents Literally Turn Their Backs On GOP Senator, “Do your job!” they chanted. and from Springdale, Arkansas, Angry Constituents Hammer Tom Cotton At Town Hall: ‘Do Your Job’ The packed meeting was raucous from start to finish.
More hacks and blackmail towards Manafort faced blackmail attempt, hacks suggest. Stolen texts include a text that appears to come from a Ukrainian parliamentarian named Serhiy Leshchenko, appear to show threats to expose relations among Russia-friendly forces, Trump and his former campaign chairman.
You have heard the story of the "Boy cried Wolf", I hope. The Democrats began "crying Wolf" the very day Donald Trump was sworn in, I remember in particular because those protestors torched a limousine that day, the limousine driver didn't do anything wrong, those protestor just decided to make a statement about wealth by torching a poor innocent person's limousine and his means of earning a living! The protestors weren't giving Donald Trump a chance to do right, and since they won't be fair to him, why should I then give credence to any of their arguments, as it appears the only thing they want is a Democrat in the White House, and they will protest, burn things down and cause all sorts or property damage until that happens. Basically they are showing that they won't accept the results of a Democratic election until it goes their way, they are rejecting democracy and representative government itself. So my suggestion is they find a country with a dictator that agrees with them, and they can then move there, instead of agitating for the overthrow of democracy here! Cuba is not far away after all, all they have to do is learn Spanish, they can then go away and leave us in peace!
if you want to go live in a fish tank called "Aquarius" than go right ahead!
I remember the movie Hair because it showed a long haired man urinating in a public park, that was a big turn off to me. I lose sympathy for the character right away if he thinks he can act like a caveman in a public square, it is also disrespectful to the other people using the part to see a man urinating out in the open. People paid for that park, they don't need to see a hairy dude acting like an animal! I thought the song was kind of cool, until I saw the movie that went with it. I think of 1969 as the year man first landed on the Moon, but other people think of Woodstock as their significant event, with people jumping over fences, getting drunk, getting high, and puking all over the place, and leaving trash and garbage in their wake, as a kid, I often wondered what's so great about that?
When I first became aware of the Apollo moon landing they were all over with, I saw some pictures on a barbershop wall. I often wonder why the cancelled the Moon program, was it because they would rather spend the money to get high? Those crazy hippies would rather to that than colonize space? So I really have mixed feelings about the so called "Age of Aquarius".
Here are some names that might prove appropriate for these planets:
Friedrich

Kurt
Brigitta

Gretl
Would you like to guess where I got these names from?
Well Mars currently has no government, so that is as libertarian as you can get!
A cold hydrogen balloon would work just fine in the atmosphere of Titan, since that atmosphere is mostly nitrogen, just like ours.
After the US banking system collapse of 2008, Iceland stated their intent to abandon their own Krona and adopt the Canadian dollar. Some US government officials were worried the Canadian dollar would become the world reserve currency. They applied diplomatic pressure on Iceland to adopt the US dollar instead. The government of Iceland decided to avoid that diplomatic quagmire, and just keep their own Krona.
I seem to recall that I had full access to my account during the so called "collapse of the US bank system!" I had no trouble getting my money, so you must be referring to another country named the "United States", Mexico is one, just as an example, its official name is "The United States of Mexico".
As long as the US continues to spend more than it has, you're guaranteed there will be another crisis as bad as 2008. The US federal government deficit for 2016 was $427 billion. Republicans (or was it Tea Party?) made a huge deal about this during the 2012 election. I disagree with most of what the Tea Party says, but they're right about the deficit. Balance the budget or suffer another economic crisis as bad as 2008. This time Europe won't be able to bail out the US, and China just won't.
But also notice I talked about the budgetary deficit, not trade deficit. They're entirely different. Trade deficit balances itself out: buy goods from one country, they buy goods from a third country, who buys goods from you. If it doesn't balance, then currency exchange rates are adjusted until it does balance. There's a complex system in place to do this automatically. You don't print money to pay for a trade imbalance.
I wonder what would happen to the Canadian economy if the world adopted the Canadian dollar as reserve currency?
Dell does not manufacture CPU chips, or motherboard chipsets, or hard drives, or even motherboards. When there is a custom motherboard with a Dell logo silk screened onto it, the motherboard is manufactured under contract overseas. Final assembly is fairly trivial.
China is currently working hard to shift their economy to serving their own domestic economy, instead of exporting to the US. It's proving to be painful.
Farming falls under a different wage bracket not the same as the hourly wage earner....which happens to include resturants and others....
In fact Trumps wineries want to hire under HB-1 visa's pickers for a wage of 11 something an hour which is 4 plus greater than the minimum wage....
Trump Vineyard Requests Visas For Still More Foreign Workers “America First” doesn’t apply to Trump wines.
Now the illegals would love to work for that as is propably 3 times what they are normally paid in mexico for a wage....or as slave labor here....
Trump never said he would ban all immigrants. Also since Trump owns it, there is no reason why illegals should work for him! All they would have to do is give Trump as a reference then they'd cross check it, and Trump would see to it, they get legal status, that is if he really wants to hire them!
And look at all the riots in the cities from the descendants of all those slaves. These people that want the right to pick your pocket, to rob your stores, to mug you, rape you, and sell your kids drugs, because their ancestors 150 years ago were slaves to white masters. When does this stop. Liberals suggest we should tolerate black crime because their ancestors were victims of slavery and that we should make allowances for their situation. I figure that with the election of the first black president, that era should be over! If blacks don't like laws, they should move out, go some place where laws aren't enforced outside of America. I'm not going to endanger my life just so some black people can have a career in crime. if they think cops are racist, well they should go some place where the cops aren't racist, often times they just want the cops off their backs so they can commit more crimes. By trashing neighborhoods whenever they complain about white on black racism, they are just proving me right.
They say that now, most people choose to bravely face their end rather than grasp for hope that may not come in time. Religion was invented for that reason, t keep people sane while their time runs out and they are waiting to die. Religion promises them an eternal afterlife, and that is all people have or have had for countless generations. Death will still come, even with rejuvenation, there are countless things that will kill you besides old age, and given enough time they will happen, but that will give enough time for people to have hundreds of children before something kills them. People will be able to migrate to other stars, not because they are traveling near the speed of light but because they will live long enough to get there. Migration will be the way to deal with over population.
What we need is an "Elon Musk" for rejuvenation, Elon proved you could land a booster rocket, until then, nobody really took the idea seriously, we need someone to do the same and make an old man young again. I have yet to see that happen. If we can break the age barrier, we would have another problem, an exploding population. Right now in advanced industrialized countries the birth rate is roughly equal to the death rate A couple has 2 kids, raises them to adulthood and then they die. What happens if they don't die? Then every time a couple has two children and time passes and they don't die, then the population has doubled in that time! Typical case, lets suppose a couple of twenty-somethings has two children when they are about 25 years old, in twenty years they are 45 years old their children have grown up, by the time they reach 50 years old, they should have jobs and should be moving into their own homes and having children of their own. But what if the 50 year old couple was still physically the same as a 25 year old couple and they decided that because they are still young and healthy they could have two more children, and their first two children decided to each have two children of their own?. Maybe every 25 years the population would double. If a rejuvenation treatment were invented tomorrow, then 25 years from now the population would be 14 billion, and 25 years after that, it would be 28 billion! If people don't grow old and die, that would happen! By the end of this century the World population would probably be 60 billion, hopefully we will be a spacefaring society when that occurs and most of us will be living in space. The great part of this would mean that interstellar travel just requires patience, we can go slow and take a long time, and the people who started out on the mission, can finish it an still be young. It would also be easier to terraform planets if we don't age, we won't be working for the next generation or the one after that, we would be working for ourselves!
Hi Spacenut:
I dunno about Tom, but I live in Texas, and know the truth.
Before the current one-party tea party regime in Texas, we did not have a photo ID requirement to vote.
Can I vote for you GW? What if I practice my southern drawl, and say I'm a Texan, sign your name and tell them using my Jedi Mind trick that "they don't need to see my identification"? Would you like that? Then I can vote Republican in your name, and when you go to the polls, they will tell you, "sorry but you already voted. See, you signed your name right here!"
All that was needed was a non-photo voter registration card and being listed in the list of approved voters for your precinct. Add to that the last mass vote fraud was LBJ's graveyard landslide to get elected to the Senate, back in the late 1940's.
The tea party (as you know) has become a right-wing extremist bunch, closely allied to the white supremicists.
That is all paranoid fiction! You know as I do that the Republican Party is the Party that Freed the Slaves and the one that prevented by force, your state from seceding from the Union. The ones that were racist, that wanted to keep their slaves were all Democrats!
They passed the photo ID bill to vote. I have no problem with photo ID, but they also made it very hard for poor people (mostly black and brown folk) to get such an ID.
Really, how much does it cost? Does it cost $10,000 to get a photo ID? Do I need o take out a loan and finance it so I can get a Texan Driver's License? Gee, I didn't know they were so expensive!
That's nothing but Jim Crow-type voter suppression, and it was struck down as such by the courts.
Jim Crow was of the last century, slavery and the Civil War was of the century before that.
Tell me, do they still celebrate "Jefferson Davis Day" on June 3rd? Is that a state holiday in Texas?
Which in turn means that your voter registration card and a signed affidavit was legal to vote in this last election, whether you had a photo ID or not. So those hundreds of voters who signed affidavits indeed voted legally, NOT improperly as the headline you provided suggests.
Once our local tea party regime gets its acts together legally, it will do photo ID to vote, but it has to do it without Jim Crow suppression. They do bitch and moan a lot about that.
GW
Its just a capsule!
Seems doctors do a lot of experimenting on mice. Too bad, I'm not a mouse! One of the problems I have is there are a lot of experiments on animals, but not a whole lot of things developed for humans!, and the treatments that do exist are for rich people!
"I would say the mainstream media being in the pockets of the Democratic Party... "
That statement is not true, it's a lie, and a damned egregious one at that. "Everybody knows..." is not proof, it is an internet right-wing lie. I dare you to prove your quoted statement fragment true. Double-dog dare!
You remember what happened on election night, all the mainstream media was predicting a Hillary Clinton Victory, and I knew they were lying and not reporting the truth, they were lying hoping to demoralize the Trump supporters into not voting, and it didn't work! When Trump won, they got mad, and started attacking Donald Trump every way they could hoping that Donald Trump would eventually be impeached. The problem here is the New Media stopped being reporters and became propagandists instead, they hungered for political power, and they wanted to exercise it by telling lies to the people in order to influence their votes so the Media would get the government it wanted.
Here's exactly why whatever you dig up will be another lie:
NBC news has the most overt editorial bias for the Democrats, CBS and to some extent ABC are closer to neutral. YET THE SAME NEWS STORIES PRESENT THE SAME BASIC FACTS WHEN YOU COMPARE.
That is because they are all controlled by the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party tells them what to report and they obey! When was the last time you ever seen the Mainstream press report anything negative about the Democrats? They fawn over Obama and Clinton and attack Trump, that is obvious, they are no more a reliable source of news that the Communist Newspaper Pravda!
I find PBS very close to editorially neutral, with far better coverage in depth, just smaller scope (fewer stories covered). Because it raised questions about the Bush 43 administration that actually needed answering, the GOP has ever since wanted to defund it. Easily understood as political revenge.
How can they be neutral when they are funded by the government?
Fox News has been a propaganda organ for the Republican party since the run-up to the 1991 Gulf War. Both it and CNN still show a strong editorial bias toward the GOP, with Fox the worst of the two. The format lets more editorial bias displace the presented facts, for less total factual content, yet those facts are usually the same as those presented by NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS.
Not on the planet I live on!
SAME FACTS, from NBC on the left to Fox News on the right! Somehow I don't think anybody anywhere in the world believes Fox News is in the hip pockets of the Democratic Party.
You can present the same facts in different ways, you can ignore some facts and focus on others to achieve a different effect, that is how propaganda is usually done. Most propagandists look for facts that support their positions and ignore other facts which contradict them. For example, CNN is not interested in any scientific data that does not support Global Warming or Climate Change.
A quote some years ago from Fox's founder Rupert Murdoch verified what some thought (and what I still maintain): the editorial bias is for sensationalized crap to entertain and stir-up right-wingers, not for the reporting of objective truth. Which is why those of us who actually care to determine these things usually refer to Fox News as Faux News. Not as bad as Breitbart, but almost.
No news source is ever 100% unbiased, the best we ca do is balance out the left wing news outlets with right wing ones and give the consumers of news a choice, they can look at both sides of the issue and decide on their own, rather than let CNN do their thinking for them!
You object to the media because of their coverage of the Trump administration. You should not object, they are doing exactly the job they are supposed to be doing! Which is pointing out falsehoods, questioning decisions that seem bad to reasonable people, and questioning improper-looking connections and dealings. That has been the intended job of the media since the founding of the Republic.
How do you know they are reporting falsehoods when they have a habit of lying?
They didn't have habit of reporting falsehoods of the Obama Administration, they weren't interested in Jerimiah Wright and Benghazi, they just repeated whatever Obama had to say as if it were gospel. And now they suddenly become critical of Trump in ways they never were about Obama!
They appear to me to be doing an at-least creditable job of doing exactly that. I have never before seen such quantities of lies coming out of an administration, including Nixon/Watergate and LBJ/Vietnam.
It's just too bad for you that them doing their job pisses you off.
Before this is done, the ongoing security leaks of the Trump administration will far surpass those of the Clinton State Department, some would say it already has. And with the too-close connections between the campaign and the Russians, illegalities have already occurred.
Things bordering on treason are yet to be uncovered, but I predict they will be. I just hope and pray the media keeps looking under all the rocks for all the cockroaches and other vermin.
GW
Well Trump did not fire everybody in all Departments when he became President, so there are a lot of leakers from the Obama Administration that are still there!
So what do you think, should NASA sell lottery tickets for an Apollo 8 style mission. I don't really know what good professional astronauts would do by sitting in a capsule and orbiting the Moon. They could read the book of Genesis, or they could snap photos of the Moon through their windows.
In the shadow of a crater, we could store fuel for ascent for a long time, also a lander would require less fuel for descent if it also didn' have to carry its ascent fuel. It could use precisely the same amount of fuel it used for descent as it would need for ascent if it could refuel on the Moon. The extra payload capacity could be used to haul up more Lunar rocks, or the same descent rockets could be used for ascent. I think establishing a base for fuel production would be a good idea after the first few missions.
