Thanks for the input on the 1 bar Venus to Mars.
Was more of a guess than anything for me.
Not much literature to surf on such an concept.

Ammonia asteroids better source, but are they easier to get?
Venus is close and has lots of freebies.
A good candidate asteroid would be far away and fuel expensive.

Then again pretty much any gaseous asteroid and a bunch of super greenhouse gas will change Mars.
Maybe just water/ice asteroids would suffice, or even a decent comet crash.

Wish i could be more sure on a answer about the 1 bar Venus atmosphere to Mars question.

More of a guess than anything on my part that the gravity on Mars would just allow the gas to spread further than on Venus.

Hopefully someone will dive in and give a productive answer.

Thinner atmosphere on Mars due to less gravity.

1 bar of venus atmosphere sent to mars would be one bar of pressure in a 1/3 gravity well.

Math not that simple as 1/3 bar though.
I believe you get about 1/2  to 3/5 of 1 bar on mars spread to higher altitudes.

I could be totaly wrong though, not a study i am very familiar with.

Before we think about moving anything from Venus to try and terra form it, we should probably think about where the additional heat on Venus is coming from.

If we take into account all the solar, C02 atmosphere and possible heat generated atmospheric conditions, Venus is still much hotter than the temperature can account for.

My guess is that Venus produces a lot of heat from the core directly to the surface.

Something like scraping away 20km of earths crust would on earth.

If that is true then nothing we do will ever terra form Venus.

Moving 1 bar of nitrogen from Venus to mars is possible but long term.
With a very sustained effort 1 bar of nitrogen will require about the same energy that all of earth has produced in the last 50 years and take around 36,000 years to complete.

In my opinion Mars could use just the native Venus atmosphere more than a nitrogen import.

We could move 1 bar of native Venus atmosphere with almost no output energy.
If we take advantage of the mainly co2 atmosphere to move the c02 atmosphere as separated C for storage and transport vehicles and 02 as the fuel to move, then we can probably move 1 bar of it to mars in as little as 1000 years.

Moving 1 bar of Venus atmosphere will make mars a 3% nitrogen atmosphere anyway.

My guess is that as little as 1/4 bar of Venus atmosphere sent to mars would set the melt going at mars.

Well sulphur is good and bad at Venus.
Sulphur is the main reason for clouds also the reason for sulfuric acid rain.

If you could remove all the sulphur from Venus the habitable zone would  disappear, the temperature would rise considerably as the clouds also dissapear.
This might impart a considerable expansion of the atmosphere allowing faster solar degradation of the co2 atmosphere to space, but at 92 bars a degradation at even accelerated pace will take nearly forever.

The water contained in the sulfuric acid would be separated fast from intense UV separation to Oxygen and Hydrogen, then Hydrogen quickly lost to space, so a big resource at Venus would also be lost when removing the sulphur.

I question if it is easier to settle Mars or Venus.
Mars can be settled underground quite easily, once we remove the two main problems at Mars... the cold and thin atmosphere it is ready.
Going underground allows easy solutions to both and offers a third radiation protection.

At Venus to make a settlement we need huge rockets and huge equipment to make a cloud city before we could settle.
It has to be adjustable in any wind so it will need lots of fuel, lots of backup solutions, lots of acid protection, emergency escape vessels etc etc.
All big resources a long way from another big gravity well Earth.

If we use Venus as a fuel depot or fuel and food depot then all sorts of possibilities open up.
No need for escape vehicles for carrots smile

In my opinion we don't need to attempt to terra form either Mars of Venus.
Just use what they offer and make the best use of what they have.

I agree Venus and Mars both have trade offs.
Like you say Mars is never going to be a good resource for fuel so the Venus abundance might prove to be a big bonus.

Even with the technology we have now using solar power and separation of co2 Venus looks like a much better place to fuel all space ventures.

Mars is sure to be the next real home of humans, Venus probably never a home.

We should probably think of Venus as just a store of Carbon and Oxygen in pretty much unlimited amounts, with plenty of free power to extract both.

Using the clouds on Venus as a home at best is a risky venture.
In the zone that human life could exist, it also rains concentrated sulfuric acid, a point most cloud city people probably haven't thought about much.

Sure we could overcome the sulfuric acid rain but it means staying inside a fortress 24/7.
Makes little sense to go if we are living in a can, we can do that anywhere.

Probably the best use for Venus i can think of is to terra form Mars.
1 bar of that 99% CO2 atmosphere would do the trick, maybe as little as 250mb sent to Mars from Venus would take the chill and low pressure off.

Venus has so much atmosphere we could probably terra form everything in the entire solar system, use free co2 separated fuel at Venus, build most of the transports from Carbon, and still have 40 or 50 bars left over LOL

Maybe this new planet is made of lighter things than earth.
Could be a red dwarf takes much longer to form and uses up more heavy elements than a standard yellow star like ours.

This planet could be five times the size of earth and still have similar gravity.

Or it could be 5 times earth  gravity since red dwarfs form quicker leaving much more heavy material for planets to be created from.

Lets not put our regional prejudices on other worlds and star types smile

Wish a red dwarf expert would now arrive for a few educated guesses smile

Something like ... mankind has domain of all creatures on Earth...

A god of all the universe makes more sense to me than a god limited to just earth in all the universe.

If god exists in any religion he should be god of everything, not just Earth.

Pretty simple for any religion to embrace a grander god.
Science and religion need not clash.

Sure finding another Earth like place will be a tough pill to swallow for a regional species, but an easy one to swallow for a species of the universe.

When or if we find Earth2 the universe will still be the same, just our understanding of it will change.

When we find Earth99 we might have a start on understanding the universe as it really is.

Just my 2  1/4 cents cnd... = 2 cents USA.

Lets think about this more of a problem in technology than distance.

100 years ago how long did it take to go around the world?
How long now?
And how long 100 years from now?

20 LY's might seem an unimaginable distance right now, but will it be so unimaginable in 100 years, or even a less daunting distance 100 later than that.

The planet.....

We should probably have someone here that knows more about red dwarf star formation process, the radiation that star produces and the likeliness that a planet orbiting at 15 day years could even have an atmosphere.

If it is about 2.2 G X Earth then we probably could adapt ourselves to it, but more likely we would adapt the planet to us.

If we have the technology to go visit it, then we probably have the technology to rework it to our likening.

Maybe time for NASA to stop sitting on it's hands and get the planet finder in space before some other country does.
NASA and the USA space program could find themselves playing catchup in very short time if they don't.
I guess NASA  and the USA could just pay for information from whatever country decides to be the first to take pictures of earth2.

Some things are more important than shuttling things to the space station, in fact almost all other things in space are smile

If you level every high point on Mars the gravity would be a very trivial amount stronger to everything on the surface.
Much less than 1/10000th of a percent though.

Only due to the fact that more material would be pulling on you from below on a totally flat mars.

A Mars with bumps has trivial gravity differential pulling you up or to the side, that is the only difference you would feel.

Mars gravity total would remain the same, but you would feel the weight of an atom or two more on a flat mars.

I agree that the drake equation is a little like trying to guess a persons age within 1 hour from the moon with no telescope.
Very difficult to get an accurate guess.

I think Mars will be a pretty good sign post for how adaptable life is in the universe.

If we get to Mars and discover it had microbial life at some point in its history, we can take a pretty good guess that form of life is pretty abundant everywhere it is possible in the universe.

Going from bacteria to animal life takes a long time to cook that recipe and i think it requires the moon a stable star and lots of other oddities.
Animal or similar life will be pretty scattered about the planets that can have life.
Probably a few freak accidents to make animal life so we can be pretty certain it isn't a straight forward process.
Then again earth might just be a slow learning curve planet and most others only take a few million years to obtain animal cells.

Intelligent life, in my opinion very very rare.
You need land and water in a good mix, steady volcanic activity but not to much, natural radiation shields that last for the life of a small planet, few impactors in billions of years etc etc etc.
Any other  large life form that dominates a planet like the dinosaurs will stop the creation of an intelligent life form.
Big brains on small creatures vs huge beasts isn't a contest.

My random guess would be one or two intelligent societies per galaxy.
And 1 or 2 on the way towards inteligence.
100 or 200 million planets with animal like life in the sea or sea and land.
1 billion bacteria/algae worlds.

Drake loved to do his calculation on just earth like planets so it was very limiting.

If we expect Saturn sized planets to be in the life zone of stars with say 20 moons orbiting it.
We might discover that instead of maybe 100 billion potential places for life in the universe, including those moons allows for a trillion places for life in each galaxy.

Maybe when we can really see planets orbiting other stars we can have an educated guess, but until they launch the space telescopes big enough to see them its all guess work.

Better question is what animals could live on a terra formed Mars.


My thought is that other than bacteria or lichens or a few select virus.
Maybe a few animals that live in aquatic environments like crayfish, leaches etc could survive since they won't be so effected from the 1/3 G mutations.

No other creature will be able to endure a mars with less than 10% oxygen.
With 1/3 gravity the results of long term 1/3 G will be extreme genetic changes to fast for a species to be preserved.

That includes us humans at 1/3 G also, even in fully enclosed habitats at 21% oxygen the genetic rate change will alter humans into sterile Martians very fast.

A surface terra formed Mars with more than 10% O2 will be so far of in the distance as to be forever in our terms.
And 21% O2 if even possible to keep mars warm at 21 % O2, as far again.

How about cover it in solar panels and separate C02 into 02.?

02 is lighter than C02 so you can float in the cloud tops, when you have stayed as long as you like, then go as high as the buoyancy will take you with some heat added to the 02 in your blimp.
At that point compress the 02 inside the air ship into liquid 02 and use it as rocket fuel.

It makes for a pretty simple vehicle and totally reusable, might even be able to carry extra 02 or C or sulphur or h20 to orbit.
Venus might not be such a bad place to fuel up.

If we use the waste C from the C02 seperation process we might even be able to make more Venus air ships from it, or at least most of a new ship.

Depends if we take into account all the abundant free fuel and solar power at Venus.

Delta V worse at Venus, but production of fuels to overcome the difference might be a big plus at Venus and a big minus on Mars.

The pulverized metal asteroid as the coil sure make construction a pretty simple process.
It also makes charging it with any control a pretty difficult process.

I wonder if just having a metal dust ring spinning around the planet would make its own mag field?
Should be a differential energy between the ring and planet and solar activity.
Not much control of what kind of field it makes though without some pretty serious tech additions.

Without some sort of control it is sure to be an electronics nightmare near the planet.

Long term and low tech solution though.

Yeah low tech is the way to go if possible on most projects.

The multiple rings have plusses and minuses, but no more difficult than trying to control very big rings.
A little more difficult to coordinate all the smaller rings into a useful mag field than one big for sure.

As you point out Saturn does a nice job of protecting Titan so it's more of a question of where is the best place to put a manmade mag field.
In deep space at focus or close to the planet?

I've always wondered about this as a possible for a planetary mag field.

Orbit a nickel/iron asteroid, pulverize it into a metal dust ring, then charge that as a mag field.
Has some pretty serious tech probs, but if you could charge it from space it might be an ideal mag field.

Re heating the core of mars like you say is a very inefficient process, probably not worth the effort if we just need a magnetic field.

If we really needed a heated core for some place, i guess i would orbit a large kb in a really sloppy orbit around a moon or planet to add gravitational flexing.
Seems impractical though and quite dangerous in the inner solar system as re heating a core requires a pretty decent sized partner at close orbit.

Or even a few smaller cable rings designed to combine fields with neighbor cables?
Lots of control that way.

No need to make a cable runs around an entire planet when short run cables can combine mag fields, or channel them to collect hydrogen and repel the rest.

Shorter 100km or 50 km cables are pretty common tech and involve very small power loss so good conversion to mag field.

That is real low tech smile

Myself and Karov were throwing back and forth thoughts on collectors for solar free hydrogen at Venus, his math looked pretty good on it.
Using the sun as a source of free hydrogen for Venus is brilliant.

Biggest trouble we ran into was hydrogen and free 02, just became steam on Venus increasing the greenhouse, so a big shade scheme was needed.
We just looked at the atmosphere cooling with shade and didn't think about the ground as a heat source.

Now what is that permafrost warming formula? for every foot in depth it takes twice as long to melt the next foot as it did the previous foot at similar temperatures.

If we use that formula on Venus for ground cooling and need at least 1-2 miles of crust cooling before the atmosphere isn't receiving a constant heat pulse from the ground.

That is how long we need a totally shaded Venus before we could attempt a hydrogen import from magnetic colectors.
Or at minimum until the atmosphere is about 1/2 the boil point temperature of water since the h20 creation process from hydrogen importation will create a lot of heat itself.

However we look at it we have to include the ground as an additional long term heat source.

Interesting that this ground heat fact has been overlooked on Venus terra forming boards.

Us terra forming nuts hate little details like it.  smile

Good aero braking qualities in Venus atmosphere to slow down most of the way.

Then maybe just blow up the structure you are going to have as a city to use as the final brake.?

Seems the cheapest way to slow down, but pretty tough on the city structure.

I surfed around for a bit looking for what it does below ground, found 0.

If Venus continually gets warmer as you get deeper in the ground, then any grand scheme with any technology to terra form Venus will fail.
That is a sad thought sad

Maybe the clouds are it for Venus.

I've read a bit about the possible life in the clouds of Venus, very interesting reading.
I'm in the chemical process camp about that, but would love to be wrong on that one smile

I guess at some depth in the ground Venus temperatures would be something like earth surface temperatures.

Heat and pressure problems digging in for at least the first 12 or so hours, even with a very fast drilling machine.
Having a machine stay alive long enough to get to safe depth is the problem, and of course the pressure problems even on a fully made underground structure.
I wouldn't want to visit the manmade caves of Venus, a bad hatch opening day wouldn't be a good day. smile

I wonder if Venus had life at some point before it went greenhouse.
Maybe Venus still has microbial life underground at some safe depth, a pretty common place on Earth for life.

A science degree is usually way over rated anyway and does not make you more of a scientist, maybe just a more limited scientist.

Only original thinking does that, something that no school will ever be able to teach.

Think of it this way, no one is paying you to think anything, you have no career to worry about being tarnished.
You do not need to agree with anything because your paycheck depends on it.
Maybe you are a better scientist as a ordinary Joe than you ever could have been with a piece of paper stating such. smile

Surface temperatures are unbearable on Venus but what about 100 meters below ground?

Sorry for blurting out.
Bad day at work and bad wife at home LOL

I didn't say solid C02 was on the equator.
I did say that C02 mixed with H20 as a geyser might be a reason for a liquid on the surface.
Solid C02 is probably on the equator also but well beneath ground, you didn't hear that from me though. 

We just don't know enough about Mars to make any real educated guesses.
I just throw out ideas to see if they get chewed up , if they are not realistic it becomes pretty apparent pretty fast.
Nothing wrong with the process though.
No hope of me ever thinking inside the box, way to dark in there for me smile
