For Tahanson,
Somehow I got the idea from #227 that you might be the one in charge of maintaining the New Mars forum. Sorry for the confusion on that... So the project of yours is for learning purposes, and completely independent of New Mars, right? I'd love to hear more about it.
As for the server, I like Azure. I'm fine with either, though.
And you said there's no CAPTCHAS for FluxBB... Might it be possible that some have been developed since last time you checked? I found this on their website:
For Tahanson Re #227,
Thanks Tahanson. I'd love to help out in keeping the forum spam free.
As for the part about cloud services, your plan is to host a test forum then try security measures on it, right? If so, I personally think a year should be all that's necessary to figure things out.
Once the test forum is running, you'd then just have to install various anti-spam plugins to see if they work. I doubt it would take to long to find a suitable one.
I think a Captcha of sorts would keep most of the auto-spammers away. Captchas can be a little irritating, but a user only has to do it once to sign up. Over all, it's a small price to pay for a spam free environment.
These are just my thoughts on it, of course. Ultimately up to you.
For Tahanson Re #225,
If you're up for trying something new, you can run a server on your computer. The website won't be available outside your WiFi network, but with your private IP any computer signed on to the same WiFi as your computer an access what you've got running on the server.
Just look up, "WAMP server tutorial," provided you run Windows. If you run MacOS, I believe you'll have to run WAMP's Apple cousin MAMP.
After that, you'd have to look into the FluxBB documentation to install it on the server. It should be about the same as installing it on a normal server.
Just a suggestion. I hope that's helpful!
For Tahanson Re #93
Sorry about that, Thahanson, and thanks for the heads up. I'll try to stay on topic from now on.
Edit: I read kdb's post on emergency preparedness that you recommended. That reminds me, I should probably make sure I have all of that together. There aren't any hurricanes where I live, but I believe it's suggested that everyone have a basic emergency preparedness kit anyway. Good reminder.
For kdb Re #89 and Tahanson Re #90,
Well done on the Star Wars quote, kdb!
As for the thought on Martian culture, I am of course not suggesting that we create a sperate branch of human civilization, only that we seize the chance to create a more peaceful culture. But as kdb said, many of the characteristics of humanity are in the eyes of the beholder. Who gets to decide what Martian culture should include or exclude would greatly vary the end result. So perhaps your right when you say it would be more realistic to go as we are and let the Martian culture develope naturally. Oh well, I do tend to be a bit of an idealist at times.
As for the next post Tahanson suggested, I haven't read it yet. I'll edit in something on it when I do get to reading it.
For Void Re #307
I don't mean to go off topic, but toward the end you said:
And watch out for psychopaths in business, because about ~3% of men are such.
Do you mean 3% of all men, or just 3% of men in business? I find that interesting either way.
A user named BravsolF posted some links to illegal content in this thread: http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=9352
Given the nature of the post, I think it should probably be deleted.
What confuses me is that he/she signed up back in 2018 (according to their profile page), then waited two years before spamming. Another thing that's confusing is that the user's post count is two, but I can only find one post when you click the show all posts button on their profile page. This suggests to me that they've already posted once, probably something similar to their second post, and then it got deleted by a moderator or admin.
For Calliban Re #86
Thanks for the warm welcome, Calliban!
And for Tahanson, Re #85
I read the posts you suggested by RobertDyck. I personally agree with the statement at the end regarding how we should ban all weapons of war on Mars. For me, Mars represents a fresh start for humans. That means leaving behind the less desirable parts of humanity, such as war, violence and pretty much any other universally agreed upon "evils" that we as humans have on Earth right now.
Thanks for the suggestion, I enjoyed reading that one too.
Tahanson,
Thanks for your patience as I tried to find the essay! At reply #78 I was completly clueless as to how to find the article series. Then when I wrote #80 I thought I had it figured out, and my plan was to read the educationdoneright series later that day and see if you had any other suggestions to read along with it. Then at #82 the paranoia set in and I was wondering if I still wasn't searching it quite right and perhaps missing some of the posts in the series. (Your post above confirmed I was searching right.) You managed to help me finally locate the posts though, so thanks.
And now for the feedback. It was really thought provoking. You mentioned a lesson hidden in it, but I personally found a few.
Why someone has to go to school for several years to teach something they learned when they were 10 was actually something I've thought about in the past. Johnson's posts confirmed the absurdity of it.
I also think everyone's favorite teachers are always the ones that have people skills, not neccasarily the ones that are the smartest or most knowledgeable. Johnson's post brought that out nicely too.
It was definitely worth reading.
Thanks for the fast reply Tahanson!
I haven't read the essay yet, later today when I have some time I'll sit down and read the whole thing. (And give you some feedback, too. )
Just to make sure I'm getting the the entire essay, could you check the following link to make sure I've searched it right?
Thanks Tahanson, the search worked this time.
Also, I occasionally browsed the New Mars Forums for upwards of two months before I signed up, so names like RobertDyck and SpaceNut have become familiar to me. I haven't read every post by them of course, and I would love to hear any suggestions on posts/essays I should read like the ones by GW Johnson you mentioned.
Here's another one of the spam accounts:

For Tahanson Re #77
Thanks for the advice! I'll be sure to do that if I see any more spam.
Unfortunatly, I can't seem to find them the collection of posts on education you mentioned. This is the only thread that I see when I search "educationdoneright" with GW Johnson in the author field: http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=8765. Am I doing something wrong? I'd love to take a look at the posts you mentioned if I could find them.
This Housekeeping post is for Yoda ...
Yoda, if you see this post, please reply.
Hello Tahanson. Here's my reply.
Yoda appears to be a legitimate new member, but his initial approach to us used a format so similar to the bots that I was expecting to see him banned, or at least watched like a hawk. Instead, kbd512 gave him the benefit of the doubt, and I am looking forward to his contributions to the forum.
Yes, I was a little worried someone would mistake me for one of the recent spammers and ban me. Thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt! (You and kdb.)
Hello kbd.
I love all aspects of space exploration, but the life support systems are my favorite to study. To me, how and what we'll eat, drink and breath is always fascinating.
Orbital mechanics is neat too, but insanely complicated. I've just recently began to scratch the surface of it.
Hi, I've been reading your forum for a little while now; today I finally made the leap and decided to join the party.
I probably won't post to often, but you'll see me around the forum from time to time from here on.
