#1 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Falcon Heavy Assembly Underway » 2018-02-06 15:06:31

Feels like my retirement plans are on track. Wonderful to watch history unfold like this. Seeing Starman and the Tesla backdrop against Earth my little Martian grandkids aren't going to believe it actually happened.

edit: Josh sorry couldn't catch you on IRC, watched on my phone.

#2 Re: Human missions » Success by 2030? » 2017-12-22 03:05:38

SpaceX will get to Mars before any other governmental agency.

#3 Re: Meta New Mars » The great crash » 2015-02-19 01:53:01

If you guys manage to make this work out let me know and I can help guide / merge the databases together. I'm here infrequently these days but I still admit new members and act on moderator messages when they crop up. I know jburk asked me to help recover the data but I didn't feel comfortable handling such a large dataset at the time (and still not now, my knowledge level is quite amateur) but if the forum data itself is fixed just let me know via email and we'll figure out that part. If anything happens emailing me directly is the best bet though, if you email me with newmars in the title I get back within the next day. I'll look in to seeing how to do a merge in the meantime, if / when the data is ever recovered.

But astronauts has to do a lot of sport to not hypotrophize muscle and hearth: during travels if they have a full gee spinning ship an intensive training can be avoided, but on Mars surface, with only 0.38 gee, I think 2 or 3 hours/day of gym will be necessary. So a water source is necessary.
Ice Lake is too north. Buried glaciers on mid latitude (25-35°) may be a good compromise, but are we certain that water are still present and we can find with a less than 50 meters drill?

Yeah, a Mars Direct style mission with artificial gravity, you can walk around and maybe jog a bit, but again that's like ISS, they're not bathing on the ISS daily, they wipe down after exercise, but it's minimal at best. It doesn't get rid of the odor. Apparently the ISS is really stinky but once you get used to the human vapor smell you forget about it. A Mars Direct style mission, you'd get on a clean smelling ship, and while someone not accustomed to the smell would be repulsed, you'd be very much used to it and it maybe wouldn't even register. Perhaps after getting a clean shower on Mars and re-entering the pod you'd notice the stench, but not while traveling.

Anywhere north of +45 or south of -45 or in Hellas Planitia has water ice as much as constituting half the soil. Mars has a lot of water, it's just frozen in the soil. You will likely land in the lower areas because you want access to that water and the meager protection from cosmic rays. Phoenix proved this subsurface water ice when it dug down just a few inches and found it.

#5 Re: Life support systems » Liquid CO2 for clothes washing » 2014-03-30 02:03:54

On Mars, it's not really necessary, water is almost everywhere. Certainly the lower latitudes are literally full of water. At times a cubic meter of soil is half water.

On the travel to Mars, this is an interesting argument, but you got to understand, clothes / dirtiness / smells / filth is minimized. You're not washing your clothes daily, as long as you don't have an accident you'll probably last weeks in the same pair of clothes before you or your shipmates are repulsed by the smell. You're not going to be super active, you're not going to smell any worse than the smells generated by the internal sewage systems (as far as I understand on the ISS, they aren't that great, and you get used to it).

This is, imo, especially true if you use a Mars-direct type system. You'll stink, but you'll get used to it. In summation, traveling there may be gross, but once you land, you're going to have water, natures solvent, to take care of things (water actually doesn't require detergents, you can wash without them, it just takes more effort / cycles to get the same result; detergents just make it easier and get rid of potential staining; if you don't care about that you don't need detergents).

#6 Re: Meta New Mars » NewMars.com Technical Error Reporting » 2014-03-17 04:55:06

I know this is a late response, but be sure you are coming to http://newmars.com/forums/ not http://www.newmars.com/forums/

Since New Mars migrated there has been this tiny problem (and I experienced it myself for a time when upgrading accounts), so change your bookmarks appropriately. The 'cookie' your computer saves is "domain specific" and the 'www' matters a lot.

Sorry for being in hiding, as another of my favorite mods said, I am just sort of not lately invested in Mars. We'll colonize it one day, but today is not that day, maybe once SpaceX is launching 9H I'll start posting more. I really feel bad for neglecting posting so much!

#7 Re: Meta New Mars » NEWLY REGISTERED USERS MUST BE APPROVED BEFORE THEY CAN POST. » 2013-10-27 01:50:03

Once you register you can't post, but your profile becomes visible, so the spammers are putting links in their profile, which the forum software doesn't disallow. I've tried. It is somewhat crappy as it's compelling spammers to join, but they can't post or otherwise disrupt normal behavior.

Otherwise New Mars isn't being, currently, harmed by this, as we're the second hit for "mars forums" so I hope to get rid of the threat. I'm just super distracted by other stuff right now.

(New Mars did get flagged before as a security risk but that's because someone hacked the site and injected their malware, we're up to date now though so it's not a big of a risk right now, we're clean.)

#8 Re: Meta New Mars » NEWLY REGISTERED USERS MUST BE APPROVED BEFORE THEY CAN POST. » 2013-10-19 04:00:43

For some reason the non-posting members' profiles are public, and I can't turn it off, I'll look for a solution. I just deleted 3k spammers, manually, but then I did the math, and it would take me weeks to get rid of them all. I'll see if I can't get the admin to delete them with one simple SQL entry. (I have to get the fluxbb folks to help me with that first though.)

Just be assured that no spammer can post here, though they can register, it is futile. Sorry if the userlist is misleading in any way. It is not an indictment on the forum. They can register with their spam addresses, but no one can post without my permission (and I've allowed posters every week for awhile now, the email method works).

#9 Re: Meta New Mars » New Mars Malware/Google Stamp of Disapproval » 2012-11-21 14:35:08

The problem is <script type="text/javascript" src="/statcounter.js"></script>. It's an encrypted .js file that I can't tell what it does. I don't think it actually installs malware, I think it just feeds hits somewhere.

#10 Re: Meta New Mars » New Mars Malware/Google Stamp of Disapproval » 2012-11-19 00:10:45

Josh notified me, I contacted the admin but Google is still showing it. Not sure what's up. I can't find the malware in the HTML code, it must be somewhere deeper than I have access to. No idea when it will be resolved. Traffic seemed to be picking back up too...

#11 Re: Terraformation » orbital mirrors » 2012-09-10 04:45:50

Large orbital mirrors that can literally melt the regolith and release oxidized oxygen as well. Could be effective. Josh did some calculations before, they seemed pretty convincing. It was in the lost posts though. Maybe he'll do the calculations again.

#12 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Solar Wind » 2012-09-08 18:42:05

ronondexfan, more sails definitely gives you more benefit. The photon pressure equation is just flux / c (speed of light). So optimizing to one end of the spectrum won't do much good, you want to absorb the whole spectrum as much as you can. It may turn out that sails that are optimized to one end are lighter and therefore more efficient than sails that absorb more spectrum, though.

As far as adding a magnetic sail there's a wonderful concept called Dusty M2P2 that may be of interest. It uses a plasma to inflate the mag sail and if you put in little particles that reflect light it may be a successful propulsion method.

Google search for it: https://www.google.com/search?q=Dusty+M2P2

#13 Re: Meta New Mars » Spammer » 2012-09-07 23:24:08

Thanks I caught it, that user signed up before I implemented that. I will have to go back through the list and make sure others aren't lurking around.

edit: BTW, that was highly offensive and I think we pissed off some spammers with that one.

#14 Re: Meta New Mars » Spammer » 2012-09-07 21:00:07

I don't understand how that happened, I don't even think I did it because I remember your name and email and posts. It could have been me though and I apologize profusely for the error. sad

There shouldn't be any more spam messages now since posters must be approved by me before they can post. This way we don't have a flood of spammers like last time.

#15 Re: Meta New Mars » NEWLY REGISTERED USERS MUST BE APPROVED BEFORE THEY CAN POST. » 2012-09-07 02:44:19

Apologies for not thinking of this sooner. It's not exactly intuitive in the settings.

Eh, I try to get them but I can't access the .php files to modify the forums to install better filters.

omg Koeng! I deleted you? how many posts had you made? sad

I checked your email and I don't see how I could've possibly deleted you sad

Sorry again been really busy didn't have time to check the forums... all gmail...

#20 Re: Meta New Mars » Forums organization / suggestions » 2012-08-19 20:23:39

Hey jburk, I believe in that email exchange I wound up making it the way it was before. If you look at the layout it looks basically like that though we moved The First Hundred above Underhill.

Great video!  Gives you a real feel for the descent.  I guess it stops just as the point where the crane goes into operation?

Nah, it follows Curiosity from when the heat shield drops away until it touches down. You can see the wheels unfold near the end. And you can see dust blowing around really hard.

Once they have the HD version downloaded it'll look amazing. Right now it's low resolution thumbnails.
