But what kind of plants would be best to grow there for food? Because stuff like corn and wheat needs a year. I heard that NASA was growing some sort of mushrooms for that but I don't know much about it. Also in mind comes those people that grow marijuana because that also blooms every few weeks and is quite edible.

I see there are a lot of beautiful computer images of Mars on the internet and I was wondering if anyone perhaps has some 3D meshes of Martian landscapes to share?

What about insects? Don't you need bees and alike to pollinate flowers in order to get the fruit? Or would the astronauts use brush instead? I mean even in greenhouses on Earth people hold bumblebees for that purpose.

Yeah especially since they can make all the return fuel on the Mars surface, but I guess they would still have to have return vehicle because I guess they couldn't drag food for return with them although they could be filled with water on Mars. Maybe they could make some sort of artificial food there with some sort of artificial photosynthesis.

Not as much as you would think. The Mars colonists would be young (20s-30s) on arrival; meaning that when the first colonist hits 80 years of age, there would already be well over a hundred colonists (sending a group every two years), with the infrastructure to support them. It's still a stupid idea, and the very old would indeed be "dead weight".

I strongly doubt they would be in their 20s on Mars because you have to register to go on Mars in 2013 and you land there in 2023 which means that you would have to be 12 years old when registering to be 22 when arriving on Mars; or 16... which certainly isn't possible.

I think it's very stupid plan "one way ticket" I mean if they're already there why not bring them back? I say this mostly because yeah it's durable when you're younger but what when you're over 60 or 70 or even 80 years old and living on Mars?! It's certain that old people would be a huge drag for other people living there.

So did anyone see "John Carter"? I tried watching it since I like movies about Mars but was quickly bored.

Yeah enoguh fantasizing about going to Mars and actually go on it.

#8 Re: Human missions » Mars Direct 2007 » 2012-01-04 13:25:01

You know if Mars Direct really works then someone could start a petition that this program really comes to life and that Zubrin becomes in charge of it and that people really start walking on Mars in next 10 years. If from what Zubrin said NASA wouldn't even need to excel it's current budget so in theory it wouldn't be such a big financial deal.

I mean few months ago someone put a petition on white house pages about disclosing UFOs and it was covered in newspapers all over the world and White House promised to response if certain number of signatures was collected. So maybe Mars Direct could be started this way...

Hmm it still seems to me that Zubrin's plan of using present time technology and sending men directly to Mars and make return propellent there most developed yet.
I think it's not serious to expect to first go to the Moon and mine there since that would just complicate stuff and not to mention make it more expensive.
And Musk seems to me more like a guy who has idea and not actual plan like Zubrin. He's holding speeches and talking about developing new technology unlike Zubrin who wants to use present technology. To do it practically today and not in 15 or 20 years the Musk way who is still more about unmanned missions.

But of course another question is how much realistic is Zubrin's plan. For instance few months ago I heard him say on Coast To Coast radio how he'll be advocating for more fracking and more coal mining which seems stupid because fracking is very toxic (if you saw documentary "GasLand") and Zubrin says how he never saw documented case that anyone suffered from fracking and gas extracting - I mean that's just stupid.
Not to mention what they do to Appalachian Mountains to get coal (documentary "Last Mountain")

So, who has better idea of going and colonizing Mars then Zubrin?

#11 Re: Pictures of Mars » Movies about Mars » 2011-12-26 03:12:50

Oh my, I watched yesterday few episodes of fatalistic and depressing Discovery's documentary series Mars Rising (2007). It's supposed to be about future manned missions to Mars that Bush jr. falsely gave boost in his "famous" speech years ago.

Show presents that complicated version of going to Mars with huge spaceshit, obligatory missions to the Moon, technology that does not exist and zillion launches. And on top of that narrator, William Shatner, is constantly repeating "people will die" or how everything is a "death sentence" and how crew will be stranded there with no hope and probably go insane if they aren't fried by space radiation or Martian atmosphere and once they get there they will find hellish environment with horrible winds and sharp rocks...
"But" continues Shatner after all that "human Mission to Mars has started developing and there's nothing to stop it." after which you think to yourself "Are you insane?!! Who wants this?!"

Really, this is a horror movie about human trip to Mars disguised as a documentary.

#12 Re: Human missions » The Myth of the trillion dollar mission » 2011-12-21 13:01:54

Ha! You know I was just thinking and maybe this is a cynical or conspiracy point of view but human mission to Mars would indeed cost trillions of dollars if not all the money in the world... but not to NASA or anyone that would actually send them they would pay something like 20 to 50 billion dollars but it would cost corporations lot more.

Human attention is worth a lot and most of people's attention is on celebrities, sports, TV shows and other stupid things that is constantly selling them stuff. For instance just yesterday I was briefly switching channels on TV and on one channel you had this ugly woman host who had thousands of plastic surgeries and she was saying to the camera "... and now let's continue our odyssey of finding your perfect hairstyle for new-year." I mean can you imagine if that type of omnipresent women were suddenly replaced with a woman astronaut that was on Mars? People would suddenly turn their attentions from this idiotic people that are so up-fronted and what they need to buy to be happy in life and start thinking about geology and other science and Mars.

It reminds me of that line in a play by Bertolt Brecht "Life of Galileo" where worried heads of church are saying "Why, all of a sudden, are people thinking about shadows on the Moon?" Right "shadows on the Moon" something that people took for granted and rarely anybody noticed it but when it was discovered that those shadows prove that Earth is revolving around Sun and not the other way around it became topic of every sort of people, something they talked about in brewery.
Church seemed to have lost lots of followers when this new scientific revelations occurred and same seem will become of today's ruling body, the corporations. You may think the politicians are in charge but lets face it who has all the money - I mean power. At least until they start to building big malls and parking lots on Mars.

#13 Re: Pictures of Mars » Movies about Mars » 2011-12-20 10:13:30

I recently watched indie move "Stranded" (2001) and it's not bad compared to "Mission to mars" and "Red Planet".
It's kind of about trip to Mars taken by that heavier NASA  plan spaceship which Zubrin called "The Death Star". A very robust spaceship of people comes into orbit of Mars and then a lander crash/ lands on Mars. Which makes it kind of hilarious considering that that "90 days report" spaceship was considered stupid solution so no wonder they mess it up.

The best movie about Mars for me is "Total Recall". Back in 90's James Cameron wanted to make TV show about colonization of Mars with main goal to boost interest in people and I remember seeing pictures of it in magazines but I wonder what happened to it? Was he not paid how much he wanted?

Here's another movie that I would like to see Mars (2010)

#14 Re: Not So Free Chat » Case For Mars edition question » 2011-12-19 11:09:50

Ok thanks for the reply. Well yeah I was thinking that latest edition is the best it's just that from what I found out is that ebooks are still 1997 version and if you want to buy 2011 edition you have to buy paperback which is more expensive and so on.

I'm planning to buy book "Case for Mars" and I see that there are 1997 and 2011 editions and I was wondering is the difference between editions only in new foreword or the book was it updated in other chapters as well? Anyone knows?
