Re: Sports on Mars - What kind of sports will Martians play?

As long as there's sufficient wind on Mars, you should get waves.
I don't think the absence of a large Moon will present any problems in that respect, though you won't get tidal bores in rivers as you do in some places here.

I prefer beating the crap out of my fellow colonist in the ring. After six months in a tin can with them, flying to Mars, you'd probably want to let loose some stress, too.

Now that I think about it, a dartboard and darts would be extremely light and easy to pack away..

We Americans refer to 'footbag' as 'hackeysack'.  cool

Why that is, I've never bothered to discover. Footbag seems self-explanatory.

Read "The Olympians" chapter in the book Birthright The Book of Man

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de … ...s=books

While not taking place on Mars, it does take place on a hot alien planet, and it is about a foot race between a human Olympian and several alien competitors.

The whole book is great. Get a copy if you can find it.

Almost none. Phobos and Deimos orbit Mars several times a day (one twice, the other three... I forget which is which). But they are little more than oversized asteroids, not enough mass to even be spherical.

I hear you on the sharks Mundaka!  big_smile One of my biggest fears is being eaten by an animal. I'm sorry, there just isn't any dignity in being animal food. It kind of knocks the "master of the world" down a peg when you're bait.

Speaking of moon and tides, this weekend was the lowest tide in 19 years (something to do with the position of the moon, sun, and other assorted influences).

Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg Both Seen Training Jiu-Jitsu
https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/elon-mu … 13195.html

not unusual if you read history or watched Ridley Scott movies

The older traditional sports of Judo, Boxing, Fencing, Kendo and Kickboxing might seem kind of tame compared to the new popular sports. Dana White's UFC, mma and power slap business has grown massively since this thread was originally started

Commodus spent much of his life trying to live up to the name and image of his father. He was the only emperor to fight as a gladiator in the Colosseum, Commodus lived a debaucherous life & ruled with an iron fist, a penchant for spectacle, and loved the crowd. His rule ended years of Rome stability and relative peace in the Roman Empire.

Martian sports.  My money is on Quidditch.  Maybe the lower Martian gravity will permit flying brooms? :-)

Tennis another popular indoor sport

Miami Open: Emma Raducanu lower back injury 'nothing serious' despite tournament withdrawal

Although playing on a Mars sand court might be toxic? maybe the court itself will be enginnered artificial clay, clay, hybrid clay (clay courts), maybe once farms are established, grass can grow in the Biosphere? the French Tennis championship historically alternated between clay and sand/rubble courts

The strange sport introduced called Sepak takraw or foot volleyball, at Southeast Asian Peninsular Games perhaps easier in low Mars gravity
