Azure was up this morning. This topic has been quiet since July 25th due to unusual circumstances. It will resume normal updates 2024/08/25.
Occasionally vendors send updates on software or new features on offer. That WAS NOT the case today. NewMarsMember has opened an account to try Microsoft Azure using a free 1 year trial. The purpose of the account is to provide a place for upgrade of the FluxBB software currently running the forum, thanks to the generous support of the Mars Society.
Update: With the assistance of ChatGPT4, the installation of a working LAMP system into an empty Linux Ubuntu Virtual Machine is complete.
In related news, a test phpBB3 site is available for NewMars Admins and members to evaluate. Use http://40.75.112.55/phpBB3/index.php
A clone of ** this ** site is available for use for testing:

Dropbox is offering to increase free disk storage to 16 Gb in return for enlisting friends to use Dropbox.
That is a hefty increase from current 2 Gb. If a NewMars member decides to open a DropBox account please let us know so we can apply for the offer of increased storage.
Google announced that they have extended their policy on inactive accounts. Now they will wait two years before deleting an account.
NewMars.com is back online after an unscheduled outage for extended maintenance. Work is under way to maintain the site.
An Email Outreach campaign to former NewMars members is on hold. One member will be reviewed per day, for 3+ years.
Recordings of the 25th Anniversary Mars Society Conference are now available on YouTube.
We are happy to welcome former members back into the active community. It has been brought to my attention that a number of former members are marked as "banned". In many cases, this marking is a limitation of FluxBB, which is the forum software.
Because of the onslaught of thousands upon thousands of spammers over 20+ years, the decision was made to close off access to inactive accounts. Unfortunately, the only mechanism available is the "banning" tool. If you are an older member and you find your account has been banned, it may have been locked to prevent hacker access. You can ask SpaceNut to reactivate the account. See the procedure below. Those who were banned for inappropriate behavior may also apply. SpaceNut will then have the opportunity to evaluate your application.
SpaceNut is in the process of upgrading members from "banned" to inActive. Since there are over 1000 folks caught up in this situation due to the spammers, it is going to take SpaceNut a while to complete the upgrade.

For existing registered members who have lost your password ... If you remember the email address you used to register, you can request a recovery email at that address. If you no longer have the email available (as could happen over 20+ years) just write to NewMarsMember@gmail.com email address. Your request will be forwarded to SpaceNut, who has the tools available to assist as needed.
For all ... we really ** are ** looking for members who want to make a difference by helping others with projects, or providing leadership on new projects. We have a ready supply of folks who can and will make comments and offer suggestions. We don't need more folks in that specialty. Looking forward to hearing from you!

We ** do ** need folks who can and ** will ** help project leaders already trying to achieve something in the real world.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

NewMarsMember@gmail.com portal is open for business.
There was/were no incoming traffic item(s) at the Portal this morning. No outgoing message(s) was/were sent.
Azure was awake this morning.
A clone of ** this ** site is available for use for testing:
http://40.75.122.55/forums/FluxBB/index.php

We have 18,370 freshly refurbished User Id's ready for new members.
A quality assurance run is finished, to find any posts not accessible upon lookup.
Current stopping point is 224000 - the next scan will be run at 225000 << the next scan will require time to retrieve equipment.
Part of the equipment needed for a scan has been located, but a lot of work is needed to retrieve the rest.

We received an inquiry about membership in the forum.
Here is my reply:
First, thanks for joining the Society! We are one of many activities supported by the Mars Society. The current Executive Director was our webmaster until he took on the larger role.Second, we have a 20+ year history.I am a (Junior) moderator, with responsibility for admitting new members. We admit new members by email due to the 20,000 spammer accounts that were created when we had open enrollment.***I have admitted five new members since we started this procedure, and none are active. I would like very much to bring in new members, but admitting someone who then never shows up is a waste of everyone's time.***Please study the forum and examine the current active members. Are these people you want to interact with for not just a day or two, but for years?***You can see that GW Johnson is a serious contributor but we have other members who are on the light side. Everyone has a role in the history of the forum. The procedure to admit a new member is simple enough. What is challenging is finding the right person.Let's see if this is something you really want to do. We are not here to give folks a soap box. We ARE here to give folks a chance to pull on the oars.***Spend some time studying the 20+ year history, and a few of the thousands of contributors, and let me know something that would convince me you are worth admission.(th)

We ** do ** need folks who can and ** will ** help project leaders already trying to achieve something in the real world.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
