Re: Recruiting expertise for NewMars Forum topics:

NewMarsMember@gmail.com portal is open for business.

There was/were one incoming traffic item(s) at the Portal this morning. No outgoing message(s) was/were sent.

Occasionally vendors send updates on software or new features on offer.  That WAS NOT the case today.  NewMarsMember has opened an account to try Microsoft Azure using a free 1 year trial. The purpose of the account is to provide a place for upgrade of the FluxBB software currently running the forum, thanks to the generous support of the Mars Society.

Today's incoming email was a test email from the new phpBB3 test account for NewMars, running on Azure. The email was a test of the contact feature of phpBB3, as implemented for NewMars.

Update: With the assistance of ChatGPT4, the installation of a working LAMP system into an empty Linux Ubuntu Virtual Machine is complete. The package is working, with active links to the Apache test page, and the PHP information display. Loading the database is complete. We are ready for a test of the updated forum software. The Apache index.html was simplified to point to the list topic test script.

In related news, a small script to perform updates of the database was installed and tested with success. The installation is ready for a forum package, if one becomes available.  An attempt to install phpBB3 is complete, and the test web site is running. The site is starting with a clean database, for testing purposes.

Dropbox is offering to increase free disk storage to 16 Gb in return for enlisting friends to use Dropbox.
That is a hefty increase from current 2 Gb. If a NewMars member decides to open a DropBox account please let us know so we can apply for the offer of increased storage.

Google announced that they have extended their policy on inactive accounts. Now they will wait two years before deleting an account.

NewMars.com is back online after an unscheduled outage for extended maintenance. Work is under way to maintain the site.

An Email Outreach campaign to former NewMars members is on hold. One member will be reviewed per day, for 3+ years.

Recordings of the 25th Anniversary Mars Society Conference are now available on YouTube.

We are happy to welcome former members back into the active community.  It has been brought to my attention that a number of former members are marked as "banned".  In many cases, this marking is a limitation of FluxBB, which is the forum software.

Because of the onslaught of thousands upon thousands of spammers over 20+ years, the decision was made to close off access to inactive accounts.  Unfortunately, the only mechanism available is the "banning" tool.  If you are an older member and you find your account has been banned, it may have been locked to prevent hacker access.  You can ask SpaceNut to reactivate the account. See the procedure below.  Those who were banned for inappropriate behavior may also apply.  SpaceNut will then have the opportunity to evaluate your application.

For existing registered members who have lost your password ... Your request will be forwarded to SpaceNut, who has the tools available to assist as needed.

For all ... we really ** are ** looking for members who want to make a difference by helping others with projects, or providing leadership on new projects.  We have a ready supply of folks who can and will make comments and offer suggestions.  We don't need more folks in that specialty.  We ** do ** need folks who can and ** will ** help project leaders already trying to achieve something in the real world.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

See the procedure below.  Those who were banned for inappropriate behavior may also apply.  SpaceNut will then have the opportunity to evaluate your application.

For existing registered members who have lost your password ... Your request will be forwarded to SpaceNut, who has the tools available to assist as needed.

That WAS the case today.  NewMarsMember has opened an account to try Microsoft Azure using a free 1 year trial. The purpose of the account is to provide a place for upgrade of the FluxBB software currently running the forum, thanks to the generous support of the Mars Society.

This email was from Microsoft about Azure.

Update: With the assistance of ChatGPT4, the installation of a working LAMP system into an empty Linux Ubuntu Virtual Machine is complete.

In related news, a test phpBB3 site is available for NewMars Admins and members to evaluate. Use http://40.75.112.55/phpBB3/index.php

In related news, a clone of ** this ** site is ready for use for testing:
http://40.75.122.55/forums/FluxBB/index.php

If you remember the email address you used to register, you can request a recovery email at that address.  If you no longer have the email available (as could happen over 20+ years) just write to NewMarsMember@gmail.com  email address.

Re: Recruiting expertise for NewMars Forum topics:

Our newmarsmember@gmail.com received an inquiry this morning. I have replied and hope our applicant is willing to pursue the opportunity further. Here is my reply:

Hi! Thank you for writing to us!
We have accepted five new members since we opened email registration, and none are active.I am one of the four Admins for the site, and as Junior Moderator, I am responsible for admitting new members.Because our previous new members have not been active, I am thinking about how to evaluate your application.
We have been active for over 20 years, and have many thousands of posts, and many topics.
Have you looked at any of the existing posts?
We have over a thousand members in that 20 years, and most are inactive.
How do you think you might be able to contribute to the collection of wisdom we are trying to build.
The Mars Settlement project requires serious people.
You will find that entertainment is the main focus of some members.
Impressing others is motivation for some.
How would you like to participate?
(th)

In looking over the reply, I can see that I overlooked some important motivations that keep our active members involved.

Chief among these is the impulse to help others.

Another is the desire to share interesting news of current events.

Because we have an opportunity to interact with a prospective new member, I'd appreciate comments / suggestions / advice from everyone.

NewMars is part of the Mars Society.  NewMars is somewhat like a chapter, with the distinction that it is an online community.

NewMarsMember@gmail.com portal is open for business.

There was/were one incoming traffic item(s) at the Portal this morning. one outgoing message(s) was/were sent.

We received our first inquiry about membership in 2024!  I sent a reply. In addition I reported the inquiry to NewMars. In addition to those two steps, I wrote a post about a possible new class of membership. This would be a "LikePosts"  membership. The new class would update the likes field in the Posts record. A new table would be created to collect likes by member, so that only one like per member would be accepted for a given post, and so that the identity of the liking member would be available for view (that would require a new PHP script to view the table).

For existing registered members who have lost your password ... If you remember the email address you used to register, you can request a recovery email at that address.  If you no longer have the email available (as could happen over 20+ years) just write to NewMarsMember@gmail.com  email address.

Re: Recruiting expertise for NewMars Forum topics:

NewMarsMember@gmail.com portal is open for business.

There was/were no incoming traffic item(s) at the Portal this morning. no outgoing message(s) was/were sent.

A clone of ** this ** site is ready for use for testing:
http://40.75.122.55/forums/FluxBB/index.php
