Re: Recruiting expertise for NewMars Forum topics:

The NewMarsMember * gmail.com portal is open for business.

There was/were one incoming traffic item(s) at the Portal this morning. Two outgoing message(s) was/were sent.

The first Zoom meeting for NewMars members was held Monday November 8th at 1 AM UTC.  It lasted for well over 4 hours.

The next Zoom meeting is scheduled for 1 AM UTC on Monday November 15.

There are nearly 8 billion people on Earth these days, and several billion have access to the Internet.  This forum is accessible to ** every ** Earth citizen with Internet access.  We ** know ** the site is of interest to spammers! Hopefully it is of interest to others who want to use their time more productively.

We have 11,000 freshly refurbished User Id's ready for new members, and Id's through  18,344 are waiting for finishing touches.  We have run out of Usernames that may be eligible for upgrade for use by "real" members. We are halfway through a campaign to repair posts that contain artifacts that prevent proper display.  Scan of 77,000 posts out of 77,000 were completed and the end point was found. Procedures to revise posts containing unneeded text are in place.  Code to perform updates is finished and tested. It is waiting for final approval.

If approval to proceed is not granted, the project is finished.

We have multiple initiatives underway that can use assistance, or you can create your own initiative.

The author of a concept for a 17 person expedition to Mars has specifically requested participation by peers to help.

A proposal for an 8 member expedition is in review.

RobertDyck could use assistance of all kinds in development of the Large Ship proposal. There are three animation/drawing systems in play.
Fusion 360 is a version of commercial software by AutoDesk that is available for student non-commercial use. It requires a beefy computer.
Blender is a free animation package that includes drawing capability.

The Large Ship project may stimulate spinoff activities, such as a full scale greenhouse in LEO built to Large Ship specifications.

The My Hacienda topic is in need of 7,800 individuals to populate a virtual community to simulate self-sustainability on Mars

The subject of abundant energy supply for the population of Earth (and Mars in due time) is under discussion in the Nuclear Power is Safe topic.  It seems reasonable (to me at least) to suppose all fossil fuel power stations can be replaced with modular nuclear fission packages quite rapidly if the people of Earth decide that is a good idea.  It appears the leadership of China thinks that is a good idea for their nation.

A book was recommended for discussion: Beyond Oil and Gas: The Methanol Economy by Olah, Goeppert and Prakash
Abundant energy from modular fission reactors is continuing to receive attention.

A new challenging pair of topics just arrived on the scene ...

Recent discussion is in-depth about how to design an orbital refueling facility.  An interesting concept is a Giant Syringe able to handle cryogenic fluids.  Ullage thrusters appear to be favored at this point, and electric/ion engines may come into their own for this purpose.

Recently a member who goes by "Louis" launched a topic that offers an opportunity to develop sophisticated 3D Vision/robotic software to stack stones on Mars.  It should be possible to replicate the skill set of ancient human stone masons who have built very long lasting structures without mortar.  An obvious first application for such software is to build cairns as way markers for early travelers on Mars.

The current issue of Analog Science Fiction & Fact includes a Science Fact article on fusion reactors in orbit.  There appear to be significant advantages to placing a fusion reactor in orbit.

There is a new opportunity for engineers to design a rover to find landing sites for Starship class vehicles.  The rover needs to be able to determine solidity of the terrain using appropriate sensing techniques.  A new topic has been created for this discussion.

A book was recommended for discussion: "Plentiful Energy" (about fission reactors).

Use of molten sand as an energy storage medium is a new topic of discussion. Subsequently a practical "Hot Rocks" energy storage method was reported to the forum.

Read Post #2 of this topic for procedures to apply for membership.  Mention specific assistance you wish to provide.

For existing registered members who have lost your password ... For all ... we really ** are ** looking for members who want to make a difference by helping others with projects, or providing leadership on new projects.  We have a ready supply of folks who can and will make comments and offer suggestions.  We don't need more folks in that specialty.  We ** do ** need folks who can and ** will ** help project leaders already trying to achieve something in the real world.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Re: Recruiting expertise for NewMars Forum topics:

Much like all projects have a beginning, middle and an end goal to bring about change for NewMars to one where productive conversation and knowledge are the keys to going to Mars. The beginning of identification of posts that have been corrupted by conversions from software of the past are set to begin and hopefully in time we will get back the lost posts from the great crash which is our middle to our forums repair. Which the end goal to reach out to past members to reactivate there ID's to begin again the strength of knowledge for the conversation to make a Mars Future possible.

Re: Recruiting expertise for NewMars Forum topics:

The NewMarsMember * gmail.com portal is open for business.

There was/were no incoming traffic item(s) at the Portal this morning. One outgoing message(s) was/were sent.

We received an inquiry from a prospective new member.  I sent a reply to encourage the candidate to continue the application process, as four others have done.  I am looking for new members who will be able and willing to make a contribution.  This candidate is interested in writing, and is considering a series on terraforming (or at living successfully) at Venus. I am reminded of Quaoar, who has written several science fiction novels (I gather) after retiring from a career as a physician.

I am looking for new members who are blessed with enough time and energy to participate for some time into the future.

The next Zoom meeting(s) is/are scheduled for next Sunday.  We will be using the Professional Mars Society account.

Time for early meeting: 19:00 UTC <<== No host is available. If you would like to see this meeting in action, say so.

Time for later meeting: 1:00 UTC Monday <<== Host is available for this event.

The first Zoom meeting for NewMars members was held Monday November 8th, 2021 at 1 AM UTC.  It lasted for well over 4 hours.

Approval to proceed IS granted, the project will resume in December, 2021.

Equipment to be used for the update series was tested and found ready to begin work on December 1st. The process will last through July of 2022 and well into August.

Re: Recruiting expertise for NewMars Forum topics:

Edited copy of reply to candidate with much needed skills and interests, 2021/12/02 (th)

For (candidate) ... "Holy Moley!" That was my first reaction upon reading your inquiry!I sure hope you decide to follow through.  We've admitted four new members since we closed off the open door to spammers. Of these, all are students (one PhD candidate, one BS graduate applying for medical school, and two undergraduates). The problem is that after the initial flurry of messages upon joining, all four have disappeared into the black hole of their studies. I applaud their concentration, and wish them the best because a strong education is the key to their success in life. However, it is disappointing for forum leadership (I am the junior most member of leadership) to admit such highly qualified people and then have them return to academia.

I am actively and persistently seeking folks who are (a) serious about having an impact on the future and (b) interested in participating in the Mars Society forum activities.

Your description of your interests and actual hands-on work seems like an almost perfect match for this group.
There are a couple of trivial hoops to jump to qualify for admission.  If you have not read Post #2 of the Recruiting topic, you can find details there.

However, before you even look into that, let's explore whether this is something you want to invest some time in.
We have on the order of 2000 members, but only a dozen or so actually contribute.
Of those who contribute, we have some heavy hitters:
GW Johnson is a PhD aerospace engineer
Calliban is a working engineer in Scotland
kbd512 is a software worker (I'm not clear on details) but he comes across as ** very ** knowledgeable and capable
Void is a person of (to me amazing) creative thinking capability who often uses graphics to illustrate ideas
SpaceNut is the senior administrator who has an ability (that I find awesome) to search the Internet
Robertdyck is working on a concept for a Large (rotating) Ship

In order to meet ** my ** needs (as recruiter) I'd like to bring in folks who are able to help those who are doing projects, as well as to start projects of your own.

Take a look at My Hacienda ... I'm in need of 7,800 people to take one of those slots and develop details plans for business activities on Mars as part of an integrated capitalist structure designed to live on Mars as level one civilization independent of Earth.

Your talents and interests are greatly needed for Large Ship alone, and I'll bet that there are other ongoing projects that could use help.
However, this is most definitely a cooperative and collaborative enterprise.

If you want to pursue some profit oriented activity that relates to the Mars enterprise, I think you'll find support here.
Please give the matter some thought.  We don't need to admit folks who join and then disappear.
We have (about 1,990) of those already.

Hello,
I found New Mars when searching for solutions to condensation inside of the protective "space helmet" I've built as part of an anti-COVID protective breathing system I'm building.
It occurred to me that in our quest to find other suitable planets, we've always looked for something that can naturally support human life. However, it seems that Earth is slowly declining in that ability. Furthermore, people have developed suits and devices to allow humans to be able to safely endure spacewalks and high pressure deep dives underwater. A viral pandemic is just another potentially deadly environment to engineer around.
Anyway, I'm a computer programmer (primarily in C#) and have done some work with CAD and designed and printed things on my 3D printer, including parts for the abovementioned helmet.
In the case of the "space helmet" as I call it, I have first hand experience dealing with moisture build-up inside of the helmet and was hoping to bring that experience to the discussion and also be able to test suggested solutions and report back with my findings.

Hope I make the cut.--

Re: Recruiting expertise for NewMars Forum topics:

Our candidate convinced me to proceed with admission.  His space suit project (Covid 19 protection at the moment) is such a good fit for this forum, and for Mars Society objectives, I decided to proceed.

He pointed out that his opening message answered the questions from Admins SpaceNut and kbd512.

The next step is likely to occur tomorrow.  I've asked for our new member to provide a User Name.  As soon as I have that, we'll pull one of the recovered ID's and give it a new lease on life.

Sounds good and then we can rename the id to reflect the newest members account on the index page at the bottom.
