Re: What do you think of this?

There's actually evidence to suggst that Gore lost his own state because of voting irregularities. A lot of people were screwed on that election night.

But soph! Stop trolling. wink

Let's try to keep on topic within topics.

Re: What do you think of this?

Where were we?  Ah yes...

CalTech2010:

Since when have tyrants moved into this country and taken away our constitutional rights?  All we want to do is deport those Iranians back to Iran because they didn't have their visas renewed on time.  Other immigrants can get their visas renewed on time, including other Arabs, so why should we just let them stay here because "their intentions were good...we think".

AltToWar:

obviously you have not been paying attention

CalTech2010:

Yes, I have been paying attention.  And I'm telling you that I can still speak out against our government, hold a peaceful meeting with other citizens, practice my own form of religion, get a fair and speedy trial, not have my house searched at night, and keep and bear arms.

And my parents sure as hell voted in November's elections, so I don't see where you're getting tyranny from.

Take it from here...

Re: What do you think of this?

Um, since people were arrested because of their nation of origin, and nothing more? Because those people were not deported as per the inital reports (since they weren't doing anything illegal in the first place).

Heh, do you remember the TIPS program they tried to get passed? Reminds me of 1982's thought police.

Who says it was because of their national origin?  We do the same thing to Mexican, Cuban, Chinese, etc. aliens.  The government isn't discrimnating on the basis of origin.

I thought you were trying to make some obscure reference to the Regan administration.  The book was called 1984.

Re: What do you think of this?

The newspapers? There's plenty of reports from all sorts of news agencies pointing out that they were from middle eastern dissent.

Duh? Wow, soph said that it makes sense to do ethenic profiling, basically, and here we are denying that that's what it was (without even trying to back it up).

Also, yeah, I meant 1984. Funny how you thought I was bashing Regan, though. Didn't think you were that reactionary.

Re: What do you think of this?

I can see the inherent logic behind ethinic profiling; for example, I see nothing inherently wrong with flagging people from the middle east when they come into the country (though I find it suspect that Saudi Arabia gets a free pass- if they're going to do it, they ought to do it around the board).

The problem in this case is they aren't going to get any results at all. Terrorists aren't going to comply with the law, whereas these people did.

There were two reasons they did it. 1) Because they didn't want an actual terrorist to actually slip by, and they were somehwat reactionary. And 2) because, probably, they wanted to slap California in the face a bit.

It's funny how paranoid you guys are of government surveillance, yet we've had a 4 page discussion of how to grow pot and what its benefits are on the other threads.  Josh admited to smoking pot, and both soph and I have admitted to being around users, and nothing happened.

Re: What do you think of this?

Since when did I say anything about government surveillance? I'm a white, semi-successful, male, I could care less about ?government surveillance.? The point was that other people aren't so lucky. It's not ?government surveillance? that gets you stuck in a line getting checked. It's your passport and ID, and perhaps skincolor. It makes sense, too. Like I pointed out.

What doesn't make sense, however, is jailing people for merely complying with law.

Re: What do you think of this?

It does make sense to jail immigrants (no, that word isn't right in this context... "extended tourist" will do the trick) when they don't renew their visas on time.

i brought that up earlier.  turns out some of them did renew their visas, the government was just too slow in giving them out.  is that their fault?

Re: What do you think of this?

Why can every other immigrant...sorry..."extended tourist" have their visas renewed ahead of time?  I don't see why you wouldn't have your paperwork renewed ahead of the previous visas' expiration date.  Everyone else that comes into this country seems to have that idea down.

Cal, just prove to me that they weren't on time. smile

If they weren't on time, they would have been deported, believe me.

Re: What do you think of this?

And getting rid of illegals has to start somewhere... why do you get all touchy when it starts with Arabs?  We catch and deport Mexicans and Cubans all the time.

We also overlook millions of illegals every day.  Our economy would suck if we deported all the illegals in this country.  in a sense, we need them as much as they need us.

Re: What do you think of this?

I'm sure the Californian economy wouldn't die if they have to wash their own dishes and do their own lawn work.  I'm going to see if Tom Tancredo will run for President in 2008...

And we do "overlook" a few illegals, but deporting the ones we find more than makes up for it.  We send the Cubans back when we save them from drowning in their rafts, and we have a more difficult time catching Mexicans because of the length of our unguarded border.  In this new day and age of terrorism, I'm positive that the INS will begin cracking down on EVERYONE that shouldn't be here.

Alt, don't get pissed off about reality.  The fact is, SOME Californians use illegal immigrant labor, ususally Mexican, to do things like housework and lawnwork.  It's a fact that I can drive a pickup into a town in Southern California, and pull up to a group of people sitting on the corner, stick 2 fingers out the window, and 2 people jump into the back of my truck to go work at my house.  My uncle did it ON ACCIDENT for crying out loud... he lives in Canada, and he was driving through Riverside, California and when he stopped at an intersection, this group of hispanics on the corner all stood up ready to jump in the back.

I'm not being a racist, and I don't have any bias against those of Mexican heritage.  I, myself, have Mexican relatives in Southern California.  I'm just telling you the way things are in this country, and I'm not here to sugar-coat it for you.

What ignorance?  I just finished telling you that I have no bias whatsoever against hispanics!  It was a FACT about living California that I told you.  Don't get mad at me because I exposed the way things are, and the way they SHOULDN'T be.
