So, here is a little something to ponder given the rumors around a possible "space declaration" given on December 17th by Bush....
The very next day Mr. Bush will be giving a interview to Diane Sawyer. ???
http://abcnews.go.com/section....09.html
Sawyer to Interview President Bush
President Bush Grants Network Interview to ABCNEWS' Diane SawyerDec. 9? President Bush has agreed to sit down with ABCNEWS' Diane Sawyer in a network interview from the White House next week.
The interview is set to air on Primetime Thursday on Dec. 18. Portions of the interview will also air on Good Morning America.
Sawyer will sit down with Bush to discuss a broad range of policy and political topics, from the state of the economy and the war in Iraq to homeland security, environmental issues and the president's 2004 bid for re-election.
First lady Laura Bush will also join the president and Sawyer for part of the hour-long Primetime report.
Why would he do an interview on December 18th? A day after what many consider to be a fortuitous day to declare a bold new agenda for space exploration?
I'm probably way off, but it's fun to dream...

Looks like we're waiting for the next State of the Union address... from most accounts, it looks like Mars *might* be mentioned as an eventual destination... but not neccessarily a time frame with dates and such... guess we will have to wait and see.
Hope I don't break your losing streak Josh.

Heh heh, I hope you don't, either. Unless the timeframes are several decades away, in which case, bah!
Funny how we couldn't even get the replica off the ground, though.

Bush Advisers, With Eye on Dean, Formulate '04 Plans
By ADAM NAGOURNEY and RICHARD W. STEVENSON
But Mr. Bush, some of his own strategists and advisers said, has a long way to go if he wants to avoid being portrayed as a divisive figure who motivates Democrats to vote against him. As a result, the White House is considering using the State of the Union address to propose a big new national goal that would not be partisan or ideological and would help rally the country behind Mr. Bush's leadership, an outside adviser to the administration said. The possibilities floated by the White House include a major initiative for the space program or an ambitious health care goal like increasing life expectancies.
"They want to have the president talk about an important national goal that is big and a unifying theme," the adviser said.

Moon?
Mars if we find life. Which we might not in time for the SOTU.
I'm tired of the speculation, though. How many threads were dedicated to Bush's 'announcement' at Kitty Hawk?

State of the Union, or bust.
No more speculation till then...
Anyone want to speculate on the remaining two probes to Mars, and the likelihood of success?
My money is on both succeeding.

Welcome to Bush-Cheney's America.
Seriously though, if you want to redefine the prize of our bet, I am amenable. This is supposed to be fun.
Which leads me to a greater question:
Which is the greater feat, betting an anarchist, or collecting from an anarchist? ??? :;):

And Democrats are known to gamble just as much as Republicans, though Democrats are known to pay up quicker I think... :;):

At the White House daily news conference, Press Secretary Scott McClellan said to a question asking whether or not the President had any new details with regards to manned space exploration.
"There's no update to what the President has previously said and what I have previously said, that, as you are aware, in the aftermath of the tragic Columbia accident, the President asked -- or directed his administration to review our space policy, and that is where it stands," McClellan said.
"The review has been moving forward, and I have no additional update at this time."

This would've been the most opportunistic time to make a suggestion about a space mission (either to Mars or the moon). President Bush knows that his ratings are not at Kennedy levels, and that the media isn't really looking at Mars right now (honestly, two minute snippets on the nightly news are nothing, I'm afraid). He's not really in the position to take such bold actions. If he's elected, he would be far better off.
I think my bet is safe for now. I hope I won't be eating these words in the next few weeks.

I read somewhere speculation that the shuttle won't fly again until after the November elections. If that is true (again, if) it would seem consistent for President Bush to keep space on the back burner.
