CSPAN is a US based television network that does nothing but public service broadcasting.
It has joined with the US Library of Congress to offer a series of 10 programs on books that were inportant in shaping the US experience.
The first episode featured "Common Sense" by Thomas Paine. It was broadcast recently, and re-broadcast last night. The video is available anytime from the CSPAN video library.
The book is generally regarded as one of the most influential publications to appear in the months after Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts, and Bunker Hill, to explain what the fight was about, and to encourage removal of British rule from the Colonies.
A detail nicely developed during the course of the video is the collaboration between Mr. Paine and a local physician who helped to shape the document over several months, and then helped to fund publication. The success of the first printing apparently inspired other, competing printers, to make bootleg copies of the work and cash in on the hot sales.

Freedom of Speech (1A) means you have to let others voice their opinions, even when you think they're vile people who would murder you, if given the opportunity to do so. When this freedom to speak freely in public is permitted to exist, at least you know exactly what other people think of you, so you can't act surprised / shocked / hurt / betrayed if they subsequently act according to their stated beliefs.
All the inability to wave a Palestinian flag in public demonstrates to everyone else, is that our side's argument for supporting Israel is so weak and uncompelling that it cannot withstand a town square challenge. Weak arguments are publicly exposed when you have 1A, which allows better minds, whether their intent is good or evil, to fill the otherwise unfilled void. If you think your own people are so weak-minded that they don't know where their interests lie, then that tells me our leftists, who do most of the educating, have instead been indoctrinating, because it's easier to create a weak and compliant mind than it is to create a robust and resilient mind that is not easily swayed by angry rhetoric, and which demands evidence in support any argument, however crude or cogent.
For example, I now know that "The Squad", as we call them on the political right, publicly and gleefully celebrated the murders of Israeli women and children in New York. They have freedom of speech here in America to voice their ugly opinions of others, so now I know what level of anti-Semitism exists amongst our radical leftists. They made a public spectacle of their callous disregard for the lives of others, and now anyone who is not ideologically captivated by their death cult knows what they're about. As you know, I'm not partial or amenable to any religion being forced upon me, yet I also find people who hate others on the basis of religion alone to be fairly repugnant people, and certainly not someone I would ever vote for, because there's a better than average chance that their ideology applies to all other aspects of their decision making processes.
If you also have a Second Amendment (2A) right, then you can legally defend yourself against anyone who attempts to rape, rob, or kill you. When there's a gun in every holster, you only get to murder one person, one time, and then everyone else, who is also armed, gets to determine whether your actions were justified, or if you get shot for murdering one of your fellow citizens. This places a premium on civil behavior, so you either learn restraint in your actions really quickly, or you're not long for this world. You also tend to keep your ugliest opinions of others to yourself, or you just might face the consequences of acting like an uncivilized arrogant bastard in your treatment of your fellow citizens.
These are the great benefits conferred by having enough fortitude and morality to both accept the importance of 1A and 2A, as well as to behave as if you're not the only person on planet Earth who matters. This is simple and obvious wisdom, but it's never easy. I'm not a believer in this infantile "every man for himself" silliness, for example. When I pick up a rifle, I'm obligated to protect others as well, not just myself. If I can save myself, that's a bonus, but that's not how 2A works. There is no right without responsibility. Duty comes before self. The right to own and use a rifle is an artifact of my military service to my nation and my service as a citizen and a father of my nation. When you live by the gun, you should fully expect to die by the gun. I'm okay with that. If someone else is not, then guns are not for them. Regardless of their personal decision to stand up and defend, which I will accept either way, anyone unwilling to assume personal responsibility for protection of themselves and others is not someone I think should have the power to vote to seize the rights from others. They're ungrateful beneficiaries of unearned benefits provided to them by better men and women.
The fighters themselves had no desire except to fulfill the commands of their leaders, and to achieve a death worthy of praise on the other side.
Everyone who is not brain damaged in a serious way has an innate sense of right and wrong. If they wouldn't want it done to them, then they know it shouldn't be done to others. That's the "Golden Rule", so named for that reason. Whether they follow an internal moral compass, or not, is a personal choice. Anyone so weak minded that they don't know the difference between fighting an armed opponent trying to kill them and murdering defenseless children is not a credit to humanity. Teaching your children to kill themselves and to take pride in murdering others is dictionary definition depravity. If you've seen how these people live in counties where muslims control the government, as in Afghanistan, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between Gaza and Afghanistan. If the supposed "good people" of Palestine don't want to live their lives in squalor and under threat of attack, then they can throw off the shackles of Hamas and return governance authority to people with better morality.
The obvious benefits of 1A and 2A are reducing violent crime by reducing the number of violent criminals, since armed citizens are the only group of people criminals said they fear. An armed citizenry also serves as a bulwark against radicalism of all varieties, as radicals also tend to be criminals. You'll not convince very many fathers of children, who act as if their responsibility to their wives and children and country means something, who are prone to inadvisable behavior. When you join the military or get married, your insurance rates go down. Well, why is that? Even actuarial scientists recognize that people who have important responsibilities to uphold, statistically engage in fewer risky and self-destructive behaviors. I'm not going out "drinking with the boys", because I know that I have to show up and work to support the people depending on me.
Similarly, marriage is about my duty to my family, not my personal happiness. Whether I'm happy or not is irrelevant, because it's a personal choice. Being happy is not a reason to get married, just as not being happy is not a valid reason to get divorced. You get married to create and raise the next generation of people who will replace you when you're gone. Unfortunately, personal responsibility is anathema to the political left. They take responsibility for nothing, but want people to love and accept them, regardless of their behavior. Your mother might love you, regardless of how you behave. Be that as it may, I'm a father. My love for you is conditional, based upon behavior as decent human beings and actions that are a credit to America and the Republic, for which it stands.
Incidentally, this is what I tried to express to RobertDyck in the thread about "War". His argument lacks evidence. It's emotional, rather than intellectual. Israel gave Gaza materials and equipment to rebuild, for free, but instead of rebuilding they turned them into weapons to attack more Israelis. Someone that committed to revenge should first dig two graves, one for their enemies and one for themselves, because that's the only place both sides are going to end up.
After the 2020 Presidential Election, again thanks to 1A, we had illiberal regressive types asserting on anti-social media that they wanted to "bomb our cities" (the "MAGA Republicans"). These leftists are such uninhibited psychopaths that they think bombing cities filled with people who both voted for their candidate, or voted for someone else, is an acceptable way to deal with the fact that not everyone shares their opinions about someone they hate, for reasons they can't express in words. The person who posted that screed was someone who worked in academia, who held a doctorate in psychology. That is what the leftists indoctrinated her to believe- that she needed to bomb people who didn't vote the way she thought they should. I guess she's oblivious to the fact that most cities contain mostly Democrat voters. There were no such posts on anti-social media from Republicans about "bombing Biden cities" following the 2016 Presidential Election, certainly none from people with doctorate degrees who were practicing psychologists. On a more personal note, I haven't seen the Democrats that upset about Republicans electing a life-long Democrat since my fellow Republicans took their slaves away from them under President Lincoln.
Suppose the radical right acted like the criminally insane radical left. Well, if the left (radical or otherwise) also practiced 2A, then there's not much of an opportunity for either side to carry out such evil and vile acts against their fellow citizens, as the ones suggest on anti-social media and parroted by Democrat media on national television. This is the only real objection that the left has about 2A, which they were finally brutally honest about during the past 4 years, when they finally came right out and said, "we actually want to take your guns away so we can mass murder you without opposition". They felt "empowered enough" to state their true intentions, so now there can be no misunderstanding about what they really want on the political right. They came out in public, on national television during their Presidential debates about how they want to destroy America, and stated what their true intentions and goals were.
I, for one, appreciate their candor and honesty. These are the people that our fellow leftists, who are still our fellow Americans, voted for to rule over us. They went with the least radical option, a lifelong crook named Joe Biden, but that's what his fellow party members want to inflict upon their fellow Americans and themselves. There was zero pushback from all the other candidates on stage with "dirt eater" (whatever that nutjobber's name was, he was Mayor of El Paso, and lost elections to Greg Abbott, Ted Cruz, and Joe Biden). I can't remember his name, but he was in the news, a darling child of the radical left, who received millions of dollars from Californian sources in the election against Governor Abbott. He was typical of the screwballs the left votes for- no real job outside of government, wanted to subjugate people but had no power to do so, and loved by the aristocractic class on the left for his disdain for the peasants. For the life of me, I cannot remember that moron's name. I guess he wasn't all that memorable, apart from his insanity or evil intent. No matter. If I recall, I'll edit to post his name.

UNRWA institutions have not just produced terrorist ideologues. They have also produced terrorist masterminds. According to Dore Gold, former Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, UNWRA has produced graduates like Ibrahim Maqadama, who “helped create the military structure of Hamas.” Gold notes that, “at least 46 terrorist operatives were students in the UNRWA schools.”
There have also been widespread reports of terrorism from UNRWA-supervised facilities, including sniper attacks from UNRWA-run schools, bomb and arms factories in UNRWA camps, the transport of terrorists to their target zones in UNRWA ambulances, and even UNRWA employees directly tied to terrorist attacks against civilians.
Nidal Abd al-Fattah Abdallah Nazzal, an ambulance driver for UNRWA from Kalqiliya in the West Bank, was arrested by Israeli security services in August 2002. Nidal admitted that he was a Hamas activist and that he had transported weapons and explosives to terrorists in his ambulance, taking advantage of the freedom of movement afforded to UNRWA vehicles by the Israelis.
Nahd Rashid Ahmad Atallah, a senior official of UNRWA in the Gaza Strip, was also arrested by Israeli security in August 2002. In his capacity as an UNRWA official, he provided support to families of wanted Fatah and PFLP terrorists. He used his UNRWA car to transport armed members of the “Popular Resistance Committees,” a militant faction of the Fatah movement, to carry out attacks against Israeli troops at the Karni Crossing.
UNRWA also appears to be in the business of cultivating new terrorists. The New York Times exposed in 2000 that UNRWA allowed terrorist groups to use their schools as “summer camps” so that 25,000 Palestinian children could receive paramilitary training, including instructions on how to prepare Molotov cocktails and roadside bombs.
UNRWA does not appear eager to prevent this kind of activity. When the U.S. government’s General Accounting Office (GAO) asked UNRWA whether it screens beneficiaries for ties with terrorists, UNRWA claimed that it couldn’t because such a screening would endanger its staff. Similarly, when the houses of six Palestinian families on UNRWA’s registry were destroyed during bomb-making activities, UNRWA concluded there was not enough evidence to deny them benefits under the terrorist exclusion law.
Unless President Biden can explain how that aid money doesn't end up in the hands of Hamas, it appears that President Biden is giving away another $100M in American aid money to the Hamas terrorists / Palestinian government. He gave his own Democrat voters from Hawaii less money after their own Democrat-caused disaster involving electricity.
