a ‘Katrina Moment’ for Lula’s Presidency
https://uk.news.yahoo.com/brazil-histor … 00675.html

Lula is keenly aware of the potency of sudden crises, close advisers say. Two years ago, he rode popular anger over Jair Bolsonaro’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic to a narrow victory in Brazil’s presidential contest. Now he is facing a calamity of his own, one that could help him arrest a fall in popularity — or feed worsening feelings about the country’s trajectory and send him into a spiral that, like Bush, he may never escape.

“This is the government’s Katrina moment,” said Thomas Traumann, a Rio de Janeiro-based communications consultant. “For the third of the population that hates Lula, everything he does will be bad or insufficient. But there is a third that is watching the response of his government. And Bolsonaro’s neglect of the pandemic is very fresh in Brazilians’ minds.”

The tragedy has consumed Lula’s government since he traveled to Rio Grande do Sul alongside top members of his cabinet and key congressional leaders over the weekend, diverting attention from the administration’s agenda in congress, its Group of 20 nations presidency and planning for its hosting of the United Nations Climate Change Conference next year.

US Issues 'Do Not Travel' Warning for Venezuela Citing Civil Unrest in the Popular South American Destination
https://www.ibtimes.sg/us-issues-do-not … ican-74684

The US has renewed its "do not travel" warning for Venezuela, advising American travelers that their government "cannot provide emergency services to U.S. citizens" in case of trouble. Officials blamed the notice, the most severe issued by the Department of State, on civil unrest, a "slide towards dictatorship," ongoing threats of terrorism, and anti-American sentiment.

"Violent crimes, such as homicide, armed robbery, kidnapping, and carjacking, are common in Venezuela," the agency added, warning there is no guarantee on the lives of travelers. The threat is so severe that the U.S. government advises travelers who insist on going to first "establish a 'proof of life' protocol with your loved ones."

I'm not sure this is how NATO works but...

War will always have horrors and they probably hear types of horror stories in Hungary, things have not gone well for the Hungarian minority in Ukraine since the rise of tensions between Russia and Ukraine, it was made up of at least 150,000 people of Hungarian ethnicity and language constituting a sizable percentage % of the population, the Hungarians seem to flee or possibly be purged as both Russia and Ukraine now make their areas more 'pure' in the war that seems without end, Ukraine fighting for its own territory and Russians fighting to claim what they have claimed as Russian territory. Viktor Orbán at times seems to play both sides to try benefit his Hungarian politics, he will make a statement that is pro- Zelensky and a day later might say something that can be perceived as pro-Russian.

Ukraine is a unitary state, or it was before the invasion. At one time relations were different, Ukraine was at peace and Hungary was the first country to recognize Ukraine's independence. Ukraine did not have a type of autonomy self-determination movement with Hungarians like the French-Canadian do in Québec Canada. Ukraine's 2017 education law was an effort to assimilate the other ethnicity into Ukraine culture making Ukrainian language a required language. Re: Politics

Trump is ahead in the polls.  I doubt that what happened in New York will change that, as it appears that most people have already decided where they stand.  Those that hate Donald Trump will see this as a victory for their cause.  Those that support him will correctly judge it to be a politically motivated corruption of the legal system.  Which is what it is.  A show trial for a politically motivated prosecution, pushed by people that only care about winning and will burn the world to ensure they do.  It would be a tragedy if they succeed.  If Trump does become the next president, he needs to dedicate the next four years of his life to ending these people.  And I think he will.  He has endured eight years of bullying at their hands.

Calliban,

America was nice while it lasted.  Putin jailed his political opponents, too.  I still don't know why our Democrats are fighting with the Russians.  Given how they both behave, you'd think they'd get along.  I don't want any American President to take us further along down the road of becoming a banana republic, but that ship has sailed.  Now I have to ask myself whether someone was convicted on the basis of what they did versus what they believed.  I don't know what we are now, but we're no longer America.  We're in for more troubled times, regardless.

Re: Politics

Trump is certain to appeal this.  If the appeal is lodged anywhere other than New York, there is no chance of this sticking.  His enemies know that.  But will it be thrown out before the election?  Maybe not.  His enemies know that too.  But I think this is one more thing that will piss people off with the powers that be.  Unlimited immigration.  DIE programmes.  Lawlessness.  High inflation.  And now, the weaponisation of the legal system against political opponents.  This sort of thing happens in pseudo-communist Britain all the time.  America was supposed to be above this kind of corruption thanks to its constitution.  Even the best constitution with the most robust checks and balances, cannot protect the people against a corrupt elite forever.

I remember GW being dead set against Trump because he had concerns about the expresident undermining democracy.  I wonder what he thinks about this show trial?

Given the struggles he has to face, I am astounded that Trump has the energy to carry on.  He is nearly 80 years old, yet nothing appears to stop him.

Trumps own history is to outrun the time limits and appeals process hoping to get his way to settle out of court never to face the real law that he did break.

Has Biden broken law or policy during his term? Possibly both and I want neither for another term in office.

Re: Politics

CNN Senior Legal Analyst Describes How The Trump Conviction Was A Political Hit Job

1. "The judge donated money... in plain violation of a rule prohibiting New York judges from making political donations—to a pro-Biden, anti-Trump political operation."

2. Alvin Bragg boasted on the campaign trail in an overwhelmingly Democrat county, “It is a fact that I have sued Trump over 100 times.”

3. "Most importantly, the DA’s charges against Trump push the outer boundaries of the law and due process."

4. "The charges against Trump are obscure, and nearly entirely unprecedented. In fact, no state prosecutor — in New York, or Wyoming, or anywhere — has ever charged federal election laws as a direct or predicate state crime, against anyone, for anything. None. Ever."

5. The DA inflated misdemeanors past the statute of limitations and "electroshocked them back to life" by alleging the falsification of business records was committed 'with intent to commit another crime.'

6. "Inexcusably, the DA refused to specify what those unlawful means actually were — and the judge declined to force them to pony up — until right before closing arguments. So much for the constitutional obligation to provide notice to the defendant of the accusations against him in advance of trial."

7. "In these key respects, the charges against Trump aren’t just unusual. They’re bespoke, seemingly crafted individually for the former president and nobody else."

8. "The Manhattan DA’s employees reportedly have called this the “Zombie Case” because of various legal infirmities, including its bizarre charging mechanism. But it’s better characterized as the Frankenstein Case, cobbled together with ill-fitting parts into an ugly, awkward, but more-or-less functioning contraption that just might ultimately turn on its creator."

https://www.zerohedge.com/political/dc- … y-giuliani

An extremist is someone for which the end always justifies the means.  Political opponents think differently, and don't accept the sacred truth, therefore they must be evil.  Therefore, any means of destroying them is perfectly justified.  That is how Josef Stalin used to think.  It would seem to be how the left in America see things as well.  This sort of thing needs to be stamped upon before America degenerates into an authoritarian regime like Britain or Canada.  There is still a level of freedom in the US, that has not been stamped out by political extremists.  It is the only place in the Anglo world where the light of liberty can still be seen.

Re: Politics

Calliban,

I'm absolutely repulsed by these arsonists burning our great nation to the ground because they disagree with some part of its past that they can't define or incorrectly attribute to someone or something which exists today, that simply did not exist at the time that their "great wrong" occurred.  They have an attention span measured in seconds to days, they think the world is supposed to revolve around them and what they want, and they feel entitled to that which they would never lift a finger to grant unto themselves.  Rather than do anything at all to improve their life, they want to destroy what so many better men and women spent their entire lives building.

It's utterly disgusting and should be beneath the dignity of people as privileged as they are.  The more privileges people have, the less they seem to appreciate them.  They live better than any of the kings and queens of antiquity, yet they don't know how to be happy and appreciate all the good things so many people were sacrificed to grant unto them, nor focus on what they can change to actually improve things for the better.  They've been fed a steady dose of poisonous ideology which destroys their ability to think critically or to view themselves as having any responsibility for their own lives.  When you give up on the idea of having your own agency, you truly are lost.  Lots of despicable excuses for human beings will come along to take advantage of your perceived lack of agency.

Some people truly need religion, and for them I say they should have it.  The American left needs religion (one that doesn't teach them to hate themselves or others) more than any other group of people on the planet.  That said, they need to pick a religion that doesn't tell them to hate, fear, or despise their own fellow countrymen, for not sharing their exact beliefs on every issue at all times.  I think that's the only reason most people on the right aren't complete mental basket cases.  Personally, I can't abide any religion because it's just not who I am.  I question too many things to ever be religious, or at least that is what the Catholics told me before asking me to leave.  That said, I've never seen another group of people being taught more counter-factual or contradictory things than the modern American left, and buying into it because it became a substitute for a traditional religion.

One of the things I've noticed over the years is that some atheists, or at least the ones I personally know, spent most of their time attacking and insulting people who have religious beliefs.  They sounded a lot like many of the Catholics I used to know, which is why I had to "take them in small doses" in order for them to be tolerable.  I think those people have a wildly over-inflated belief in the superiority of their belief system over others (seems to be a feature, rather than a bug), all without a lot of evidence, because they're either too short-sighted or too infatuated with their own beliefs (or egotistical) to recognize the limitations of their ideology (my own has plenty, and a great many things it cannot adequately explain).  They thought it, so they must be right.  Right?  Right.  When you don't question your own beliefs, you have a massive blindspot.  Having seen the various alternatives to the traditional organized religions, which I am still no great fan of, where people can be led to believe absolutely anything, regardless of how insane it is, over time I have learned to fully appreciate the need for religion, whether I agree with its practitioners or not.  A lot of the alternatives are much worse.

The people calling the American right "nazis" are the same ones screaming "Gas the Jews!".  Let that one sink in.  You and I were educated rather than indoctrinated, so we have at least some minor perspective on and remembrance of history.  These people clearly don't.  It's scary to think that any of them are allowed anywhere near our children.  Their ideology is anathema to intellectualism.

They believe men can give birth, babies aren't human beings until they pass between their mothers legs, whereupon magic happens, that the world is going to become completely uninhabitable because the temperature increases or decreases a degree or two or even ten (despite the fact that this happens every single day, all day long, and will continue to do so until the Sun finally expands when fusion ceases and incinerates the Earth), or that one man should be persecuted endlessly because he said mean things about someone or made them look stupid, because they are stupid, given their fixation.  If there was a person to fixate on, in a million years I would never fixate on Trump.  I can't imagine being as nutty as they've become, over pretty much any issue, but that's probably because I wasn't taught to believe facially absurd and contradictory things by people who didn't care for me beyond perpetuating their own beliefs regarding who and what I should be.  If I actually believed in such absurdities, then I'd probably have mental issues as well.  The "system", such as it were, at least for them, is the "grip of the lie".  They can't escape it, because you can never outrun your own mind.  This is not to suggest that they don't actually believe what they profess to believe, merely that it doesn't actually help them or anyone else.

I just think President Biden has bad policy, no ability to lead to speak of unless we're talking about leading lemmings off a cliff (in all fairness he does more "Falling Down" than Michael Douglas), takes courses of action which have wrecked our economy and our national cohesion, that engaging in endless foreign wars without a clearly definable and achievable end goal in mind is a terrible idea, that not having any borders means you're no longer a country by definition, and attempting to silence your political opposition doesn't make you right, it only means you're utterly terrified of what they have to say, which is typically not done with high-minded civic motives on balance of probabilities.

My conclusion is that the media successfully used President Trump's mere existence to break their mental capacity for discernment.  That is why we need him back in office.  He makes what these degenerates are doing something which cannot be ignored by the ordinary every day citizen, because the degenerates always force the issue of their degeneracy, rather than seeking acceptance for their beliefs.  You can't actually govern that way, or at least it's never worked well in the past.  Since he and everyone ever associated with him are taking so much flak, we know he's over the target.  We know that whatever the motives of this current administration are, they are not in the best interests of the average American citizen.  If the left would stop behaving like the degenerates they've become, then President Trump would remain a former President who would have no power.  In point of fact, he would never have run to begin with, because there would be no need to.

mania (noun) - mental illness marked by periods of great excitement or euphoria, delusions, and overactivity.
"many people suffering from mania do not think anything is wrong"

That accurately describes the modern American left to a "T".  The example of its usage in a sentence even describes how they think about the way they behave.  Anything our side does must be correct, "because Trump" or "because whatever"... and could never possibly be wrong-headed or vindictive or downright evil.  If you hold such a belief then you can justify anything, which means you don't believe in any part of the founding ideals of America, and have no desire to do much of anything except destroy the successful nation you were handed, in order to lord over anyone you deem "less than", as well as to endlessly take from them, that which is not yours to take.  Sadly, that is now most Democrats and Republicans.  That's how we arrived at where we're at.  Amoral or immoral ideology, masquerading as "the one true religion", usurping righteously granted and exercised authority.  It is quaint how much these people shun traditional religions while actively and zealously practicing it, though.

If you would have told me any of this would come to pass when I was 20, I would have laughed in your face and walked away.  I'm not laughing now.  If it's all some sort of a joke, then it's not very funny.

Re: Politics

Interviewer: Why wouldn't someone like yourself run for political office? You have all the money that you'd possibly need.  You've accomplished a great deal, even though you are only 34 years old.  I know there's a lot of things you possibly can do in the years ahead.  Why wouldn't you dedicate yourself to public service?

34 year old Donald Trump (1981): Because I think it's a very mean life.  I would love to, and I would dedicate my life to this country, but I see it as being a mean life and I also see it as somebody with strong views and somebody with the kind of views that are maybe a little bit unpopular, which may be right, but unpopular.  I wouldn't necessarily have a chance of getting elected against somebody with no great brain, but a big smile, and that's a sad commentary for the political process.

Interviewer: Television, in a strange way has ruined that process, hasn't it?

34 year old Donald Trump (1981): It's hurt the process very much.  I mean, the Abraham Lincolns of the world...  Abraham Lincoln would probably not be electable today because of television.  He was not a handsome man and he did not smile, at all.

Now President Trump has arrived at the end of his life, he knows that there is no amount of money he can ever die with that will be worth more than the country that made it possible for him to earn it, all of his fortune and even his personal freedom are now being "donated" to the cause of America.

He's given up half a billion dollars.  Regardless of what anyone thinks about him or what he did to make his money, none of you have ever done any such thing, nor will you ever, so you will live and die utterly clueless about what it took to do what he did.  People can sneer and jeer at him all they like.  Despite their low opinions of "not them", he is one of the most accomplished businessmen we have ever had to run the American Enterprise on our behalf.  So far as we can tell, he's not beholden to anyone or anything except the American people, which he either serves at their pleasure or does not serve at their displeasure.  The next time someone here starts a business that makes several billion dollars, they can tell us what they've learned and pass judgement on the finer points of what President Trump did right or wrong.  The best way to prove someone wrong is to show them what you think right looks like.  He'll never be any great statesman or orator, but he knows the difference between working on behalf of the people he swore an oath to defend and screwing them over by doing everything conceivable to undermine their way of life.  At the end of the day, that really does matter.

BBC says the European young are 'rightwing'

The right could win big in Europe – thanks to young people
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cqqq952e3v6o

As Europeans head to the polls in four days of voting across 27 countries to elect a new European Parliament, millions of young people will be casting their ballot for the first time.

In some countries, the voting age has been lowered to 16 – so minors in Belgium, Germany, Austria, Greece and Malta will be able to cast their vote in these elections.

Senator John Kennedy questions a democratic witness.  This guy is brilliant and has an uncommon clarity of thinking. I wouldn't want to be on the wrong side of him.  He has the uncanny ability for making his opponants look like idiots.

Re: Politics

Calliban,

I've never thought of Senator Kennedy as a particularly gifted orator, but relative to the people Democrats choose to hire , he at least possesses the outward appearance of being intellectually above-average.  Democrats don't hire the best and brightest, they hire people based upon their ideologically-held beliefs about who others are, or what they represent.  That is the exact opposite of a good way to run a functional government of, by, and for the people.  It's a great way to use tribalism to establish cliques and fiefdoms, but that was never what The Founders intended.  I would opine that such a place would no longer be America, except in name only.

If I want to hire a medical doctor to remedy a serious illness, I don't judge that doctor based upon where they came from, what school they went to, how much money they have, what color skin they have, any religion they have or don't have, nor any other superficial and largely immutable physical characteristics that cannot ever be an acceptable substitute for demonstrated competence at their job.  Furthermore, I don't want them to tell me what they think I want to hear.  I want the best doctor I can afford to pay for, period.  Whether this means I get doctors who all look and sound the same or who slightly resemble sci-fi space aliens is simply not important to me at all.  Superficial and shallow thinkers may find that nonsense important, but I want competence, end of story.  There is no other story.  If that is a brutal and unforgiving reality, then it is.  So is nature.  You can't DEI nature.  A lion doesn't care what you look like, only that you taste like dinner.

Across American society, only 7% of Americans surveyed said it was okay to use subterfuge to win an election, or to put your political opponents in prison.  67% of people who attended Ivy League colleges, which made them almost exclusively far-left Democrats, said such behavior was acceptable.  In short, elitst Democrats don't take any issue with lying, cheating, or stealing, so long as it benefits them.  I would opine that the elitist Republicans don't think any differently.  This is the immorality of our elitists, their own description of themselves rather than how I or others view them, on full display.  Their disdain for the common man or woman is palpable.  I think people with above-average intellect fear other people they view as "less than", or ridicule them, because they're ultimately every bit as weak-minded and terrified as most of the people they believe themselves to be "better than".

Merely "above-average" people think that way.  Einstein, a truly great thinker, didn't much care for such elitist nonsense.  Feynmann was more annoyed that he couldn't have deep conversations with people about what he was interested in, but I don't think he actually resented people or looked down his nose at them, more like, "I can't connect with them at all.  How do I explain water to someone who doesn't truly understand what an atom is?"  It's more like it aggravated him.

Illegal immigration?

I don't want to live nextdoor to MS-13 gang members.  I don't want to have "Mexico problems" because some upper butt crust people living here are too "airy fairy" to understand and accept that acceptable behavior has boundaries, and that all nations have borders, enforced by men with guns.  That's how the criminal element is prevented from ruining a civilized society.  It's got nothing to do with what they look like, nor where they came from.  If they want to come here to be and live like Americans, then we will welcome them with open arms.  We cannot have any clue about what their intentions are without at least stopping them and asking them.

A minority of people, most of whom possess no greater demonstrable intelligence than another person selected at random, believe that doing whatever they want to other people is acceptable behavior.  They think they're better than other people.  They are not.  There's no evidence that they are.  A belief not shared by others not imbibing in the group-think is not evidence of anything, either.

I want a return to American values.  These illegitimate and incompetent buffoons are not the people who should be lording their authority over people who typically behave better than they do most of the time, and think of others more often than the people we actually paid public money to, to think of others before themselves.  That is why we need to vote out this belligerent cabal of thuggish clowns masquerading as the leaders that they've never acted like.  There are better days ahead of us, if we act to ensure that there are.

instead of making a better Lunar Lander, a thread which we might not be allowed post in...there seems to shared bad management culture problems on a previous failed mission by the British / ESA called 'Beagle-II' artists and legal proceedings, theft and an out-of-court settlement

'Stuckists A Dead Shark Isn't Art'
We are also allowed talk about a silly song the British tax payer paid a lot of money for and 'Damien Hirst' and other distractions which left a mission unfocused, the bad management which caused Beagle to fail.

at that time there was an inquiry a hearing an accountability and investigation but the Beagle mission is not NASA's Moon mission

Tens of Millions upon Millions of Dollars upon Millions of US $ Dollars seems to have been laundered to space
instead of spending that same money in creating a better robotic craft for the Moon

but the Moon topic we can not talk about?

Re: Politics

The US National Debt Clock is a billboard digital display that shows the United States gross national debt and each American family's share of the debt. It is installed on the western side of One Bryant Park, west of Sixth Avenue between 42nd and 43rd Streets in Manhattan, New York City, the first debt clock installed anywhere, George Bush junior broke the number of digits on the debt clock when he sent it from 9 Trillion to 10 Trillion which was outrageous for its time, something that never happened in history...today it is heading to 35 Trillion and beyond.

On the subjects of debt and deficits

Can we start measuring it in AU or Light Years?...and what happens when it gets really crazy, what is Hyperinflation?

Thinking about the scales of Debts and a thin One Dollar Bill Stacked on another One Dollar

Let's stack debt as US Dollar bills

100 Million in debt is 6 miles high, 1 Billions in debt we will stack 60 miles high, Mount Everest is less than 6 miles high...

1 Trillion in debt?
if you stack up One Thousand Times One Billion that is one Trillion of the US Dollar, the thin Dollar stacked on each one goes beyond geosynchronous orbits located around 22,236 miles (35,786 kilometers) it goes 60,000 miles

if you multiply One Trillion by Ten you would get another zero added not 357,860 km  but 600,000 miles or 965,606 km
This is the height of the 'Dollar Stack' from Earth to the Moon AND BEYOND  !!! is when George Bush junior first broke the US debt clock, 43rd President of the United States from year 2001 to year 2009 and he went far beyond the Moon in US Dollar stack of debt from the Earth to the Moon and beyond.
the U.S. Debt, in the past 20 years has been crazy, 'Astronomical' in size.

from Earth? The average distance between the Earth and the Moon is 384 400 km (238 855 miles) now your Dollar stack it is 3,379,621 million km or 2.1E+06 miles...when we talk in distance of million upon millions then we start using AU and after AU we start using Light Years and Parsecs

The Debt is not twice it is not 3 and a half times the distance of Earth and the Moon itself, it is not five times, the debt is 8.7 times the distance of Earth and the Moon

maybe soon as the decades get more outrageous they can stack the debts to beyond Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, maybe beyond Alpha Centauri and beyond the Galaxy itself?

the Cosmologist types they say the Universe itself is about 13.8 billion years old although JWST is starting to show different readings
but maybe as we keep printing debt perhaps we can go beyond the limits of the known Universe since the Universe itself is only measured in 'Billions' of Parsecs after all.

some debt clocks

https://usdebtclock.net/

It is not just the USA, the Japanese have terrible internal debts and in the Western world itself we are boldly going where no person has gone before

maybe these measurements are better explained by 'time' itself so it took a guy Jeremy Harper almost going insane and 89 days at 16 hours a day to count to a million for charity, if we assume he can count steady and continue living inside some magic robot and just be healthy counting and count just as fast and at the same pace to one Billion it would take him 89,000 + days or 253 years and that is only 1 Billion,  the United States isn't even 246 years old.
One Billion in debt stacked by a human counting Dollars is 253 years old.
the next step would be to reach into the Trillions with or without leap year days? 243,835 years is a long time ahead, or maybe rather than go forwards if we go backwards into time -241,835 BC or 241,835 now we go back in time when some debate maybe Mars had flowing water?

5000 BC there might have been some kind of people in Egypt, Greece, in India, China and in northern Mesopotamia...maybe somewhat before true human civilization itself

250,000 years is a long time and that is only counting to One Trillion, we are already moving through Upper Paleolithic era and Middle Paleolithic

Re: Politics

Biden vs. Trump: Which President put the U.S. in more debt?
https://finbold.com/biden-vs-trump-whic … more-debt/

Though the U.S. public debt has been creeping up for more than a century – and had some notable spikes in crisis years such as during the Second World War – the rise in the burden became especially sharp on three occasions: when the ‘Bretton Woods system’ was abandoned, when the ‘Economic Recovery Tax Act of 1981,’ after the Great Recession, and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The debt became a hot topic once more in 2023 with the latest of many debt ceiling crises, and again in 2024 as Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) estimated that the country is adding $1 trillion to the burden every 100 days, and as the IMF issued a stern rebuke to the nation over its fiscal policy.

With the presidential elections coming in mere months – and with both of the biggest of the most likely candidates having already held office – Finbold decided to examine whether Donald Trump or Joe Biden added more to the national debt during their terms.

Posobiec commnets on culture and claimed without evidence that Disney had re-written scenes in the Star Wars movie Rogue One to add "Anti Trump scenes calling him a racist", and called for a boycott of the Star Wars franchise. Jack continued other journalism, he live-streamed an investigation of the pizzeria and was asked to leave after attempting to broadcast a child's birthday party being held in a back room. Posobiec later said he had always thought the Pizzagate theory was "stupid" and had filmed his visit to debunk it.
