Re: WIKI: We now have a useable wiki...

I like the preamble. So how do we want to incorporate the poetry And philosophy? Perhaps a  poem for every page?

For what it is worth, I offer any of my poems in the poetry thread of Free Chat up for offer. Please attribute it to 'clark'.

Assuming of course any want to. I leave it to the judgement of the wiki masses.  smile

Re: WIKI: We now have a useable wiki...

I like the preamble.

Heehee, I actually wrote preramble.... Thinking it would be wiped ASAP. (see the comments section there, my cry for help  )

A poem on every page. Hmmm... Nice idea! but practical? I mean, I personally prefer my pages viewable w/o much scrolling... (I have no scrollwheel  lol )
But... Yeah, it might give it something special. So I worth a try.

(Now figuring out how to change typeface)

I put a poem up, on the main Wikki page. If it sounds to childish by all means delete it. I am going to put the last poem Clark did on the main page up. Hopefully two poems is not overkill. I am also going to start the philosophy page.

Yeah for sure. I would obviously link it to the word philosophy you have on the main page.

http://www.newmars.com/wiki/index.php/Philosophy

Okay, I added a section on philosophy. I tried to introduce the philosophical ideas most prevalent though the history of these boards and tried to keep it as unopinionated as possible. Feel free to, edit it delete it, or start completely afresh. It should be as unopnionated as possible and introduce as many philosophical thinkers as possible with the fewest words well keeping a nice flow, having it fit well together and educate the reader. I challenging problem but I think I am on the right start.

P.S. I am going to do a little more editing on it. I'll post when I'm done. smile

Poetry starts out with a "hummer" - - I will leave it be, its quite funny, actually. Change it if you think best.

First an elegant poem by clark and a somewhat childish poem by me (John Creighton) introducing the Wiki to show a slight bit of hummer.

I probably should change it but I'll leave it for now. Gave me a laugh.

Re: WIKI: We now have a useable wiki...

Mind you, it doesn't necessarily have to be a fact database, it could just be a community site where you post your own ideas and stuff. smile

I'm going through somewhat of a personal thing right now, but I'll have a nicer mainpage in due time.

Re: WIKI: We now have a useable wiki...

A bit more serious.

I thought that, rather than linking extensively to outside sources, we'd come up with our own views on things and/or how subjects relate to Mars.

for instance: NASA: discuss the Mars landers, orbiters, VSE and Mars, etc in more or less own words. and only at the bottom of page link to nasa.gov, websites dedicated to landers etc... itself...

So, every article, one should keep in mind 'what does it have to do with Mars?' if nothing, it does not belong there.

(probably will scrap BigelowAerospace for that reason, or find a link with mars, heehee)

We can aim for this but using external links helps make it more complete until we fill in our own details. As for scrapping BigelowAerospace we do talk about them a lot here so I think we should leave it up. I think two criterion should be asked. Does it have to do with Mars or (Is it relevant to space and do we talk about it a lot here)? If it meats either criterion then I think it is good material.

Good point.

(Edit:) Except that I do not look forward to a Wiki filled with political errr... discussions. roll

Yeah, I’m kind of iffy on that one but I do think if someone creates one they should try to keep it as unopinionated as possible. Any opinions can go in the discussion part of the wiki.

edit:Of course a political field doesn't really fit the crterion I suggested above.

It seems we have two pages about Robert Zubrin.

Re: WIKI: We now have a useable wiki...

Is it just me or are the help/explanationpages of the wiki and wikimeta(or metawiki, forgot which one is which) errrr...

Are completely over the top?
Why can't they do a simple xplanation? Trying to figure out how those templates work, and they start by listing all the templates , aaaaaaaarg!

Anyhoo, I'm getting fed up with the whole thing. Looks dead in the water, no visitors, no new contributors...

I always thought wiki's were too daunting for 'normal' people to set the step to add their own stuff. You have to actually like computers to invest yer time in the things....

(erm, time for my dose of caffein, low on morale warning, heehee...)

Re: WIKI: We now have a useable wiki...

All I'm doing is putting up some empty 'coathangers', in a very random way, to boot...

idea behind this is that it's probably more tempting that way for people to try and edit existing stuff, than create new pages by themselves....
Then again, it looks pretty empty that way...
