Let me clarify some word usage here. When I originally said "closed" I meant private, that is, only users who have access can use it, but they can ask to join. However, the forum treats "closed," as meaning a user cannot ask to join. And "open," as meaning a user can ask to join. I don't think that makes any sense, because even though a usergroup is open, a user still has to have their subscription accepted. Thus, an "open" usergroup is not "open" any more than a "closed" group. The difference being that one allows you to ask for a subscription and the other does not.

Sorry, but only members of the USERGROUP usergroup can read topics in this forum, please click on http://www.newmars.com/forums/groupcp.php]usergroups to subscribe. Note that membership isn't guaranteed, and that in some cases you may need to be a regular member of the community to be a member, but you could always shoot a PM to the usergroup moderator and ask for an exception. This is not intended to turn you off to NewMars in any way, it is only intended to create a cohesive environment for collaborative efforts. The vast majority of NewMars is and will always be open to regular users.
This is the message regular users see when they attempt to access a private forum.

ok, ok!
I'm afraid I sounded too harsh. But now that you explained the 'totally locked' initial state was unintentional, I'm a happy chappie. And now the message looks good to boot. I mean the "This is the message regular users see when they attempt to access a private forum." stuff. It almost sounds too friendly, heh. But that's good.
Again: I'm totally, utterly, copuhleetely... PRO-usergroups, in that I do believe they might very probably prove to be 'fruit-bearers,'
But I was concerned about the initial impression it might give to non-groupmembers when trying to acces the groups.
Ok, enough bandwidth has been spent on my misgivings. A lot (as usual) has to do with the typical intarweb -non-facial expression-laden misunderstanding-prone errr... Hope you get my drift...

Can we have a group, dedicated to the wiki?
Easier to discuss or suggest stuff that way...

Sorry to nag about this, but I'd *really* like a Wiki 'task force' subgroup...
Open to anyone interested in adding to the wiki, and raising/discussing to-do stuff...

What shall I call it, Rxke? Think up a name and you'll have it.
I just realized that all my moderators are managed via the usergroups (I'd previously set you manually, which was actually a PITA considering how many forums we have), and now that I actually looked at setting up usergroups it's not as painful as I remembered (which made me lazy, I confess).
Think up something in line with how the site is currently named. Olympus Library?

I'm also opening up Martian Chronicles. There may be an issue about deleting old content, but it should go alright. We could use a non-free chat oriented posting place for fun and creative things.

Ugh, me poor head... :s
Too much stuff going on, at the same time, I get mail saying I'm moderator, I go WTF... Then read your entry about how you induvidually had to add errr... I think I get it, then I see this:
You open Martian Croniclers, and then you say a non-free chat oriented posting place for fun and creative things... you mean it's paying or something or, restricted re: copyrights? or non-free re: errrrr... (searches for words....) commitment?
Probably me, but I don not understand what you mean, or are these two remarks unconnected? (sorry, read too much GNU/GPL/CC.... stuff recently, mind overload)
In hindsight: disregard this post, I re-read it, and can't even make sense of what I wrote myself anymore... Time for a horizontal break, I guess, or a caffeine-drip...

Oh my god Rxke! Hahah! You made my day! Thank you! No, no, I totally made NO SENSE at all. I don't even know what I meant by "non-free place."
OH! I know what I meant! I meant "non-Free Chat" as in a place that isn't Free Chat. That way Free Chat can be about anything in particular, but we can keep the creative stuff in Chronicles. There have been a lot of Free Chat posts that would totally fit in there (though I'm not sure if we should move them there or not).
I'm so sorry Rxke, I haven't slept since last night, and I'm pretty freaking out of it my friend! Don't worry, it was all on me and my confusedness, don't let me make you have a bad day.
I gotta go right now, you think up a name for me will you? Take care.

OH! I know what I meant! I meant "non-Free Chat"
AAAAAAAAhaaahhaAAAAAAAhHAHAHA
*cough*
Ok, makes sense. (Must be a geek to get confused by it, in hindsight, who else would think "non-free" has something to do with technology?) I was thinking about lots of things, like a pay-per-chat-session thing, a newsreader using licenced software, as opposed to the wiki etc, honestly...

*What have you guys been drinking?? Oh yeah...coffee. Lots and lots of strongly caffeinated coffee I'll bet.
Creative stuff in a non-Free Chat area. I dunno, one of the most successful of that type was the "You're a First Martian Settler" thread and that's in FC. Doesn't matter to me, though; just commenting.

Didn't ask me, but here's my suggestion: Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (even though the sound of it is something quite atrocious).

Liberum Olympia is now open. My latin is non-existant, so if that doesn't work, we can always change the name. Have fun!

Thanks, Josh, much appreciated!
One question: is this group open, like the Martian Chroniclers? (hard to figure out if you're a member of a group)
because I would like it to be open by default, or at least read-only.

Notice how there's no moderators listed?

Could I have a 'design an interplanetary passengership' usergroup where you can design a real passenger ship to go from earth to mars with people en masse.
Maybe called "Puffing Billy" after the world's oldest surviving steam train :?:

Funny, that. I clicked on this thread with the intention of asking for an interplanetary ship design group.
Terraformers group? I've seen it on Red Colony but it's closed.

BTW, if you make that group josh, I would prefer view only for non members, but if it's against you policies, it could be open to all members, or whatever you want.

Until the topic reaches a high volume it makes no sense to create yet another forum. One could argue that there are already too many. Interplanetary ship design fits well in the Interplanetary transportation forum.
There's more need for a space related politics forum (and economics?), yet the need isn't that pressing. Free chat seems the best place for politics but it has a way of overflowing into other forums. Perhaps all politics discussion should be moved there, for example:

maybe it isn't really needed. But maybe an interstellar travel forum/usergroup? I think it would be very useful.
But riht now, the best thing that could be done for the usergroups is to move their forums up, at least to above the 'earth' section.
