Re: New Message Board Software

I'm suggesting throwing peanuts at the chimps. [shrug]

I'm not married to the idea.  big_smile

Come on, isn't there a part of you that wants to see what happens in a thread full of trolls. The interplay of twisted personas might be entertaining.

Or... just continue the politcal chit chat that domintates the board.

Now enough of the teasing, what are you going to add to Newmars? You've been hinting at it long enough.

Damn, took freaking 5 hours to rebuild the search database. sad

Five hours of work or five hours of watching the monitor? :;):

By the way, we need a <snark> icon.

Re: New Message Board Software

Oh, just 5 hours of checking it peroidically to see if it was still going. Most of this stuff has been automated, and fortunately I haven't run into any problems... which is weird, computers always give me problems, but not this time.

But I don't look forward to rebuilding the search tables again. It works nice, though. I did some searches from way back when (ie, searches for Proudhon, anarchism, etc) and they worked very nicely, and quickly.

One of the most interesting features is that you can see each and every back post a poster has ever made. Which is a scary concept, actually, but I like it.

Re: New Message Board Software

I think you guys will like the new profile settings. smile

I knew it would happen eventually, and it did. While installing the mod it gave me some SQL errors, and I've had a crappy weekend, so I guess instead of using common sense and trying to update the tables, I borked around with the PHP... just silliness. I fixed in in about 5 minutes once I stopped messing around.

We'd have the new forums tonight (plus the super secret thing I'm working on), but that problem just ate my time... plus some other personal stuff I'm going through, but, yeah.

I hope the ignore feature on the new forums is used extensively by some of our posters. Unfortunately, I doubt it will remove quoted text from other posters, so you'll have to just deal.

And yeah, Willy Wonka is me. :;):

Re: New Message Board Software

Does it say if someone is ignoring you? You can't ignore Admins or Moderators, either. You can only ignore regular users.

Re: New Message Board Software

*Josh, I'm a bit confused.

1.  Bill's new politics thread Political Potpourri VIII doesn't show up at phpBB.

2.  I did a follow-up post in one of my science threads at phpBB, to see if it'd carry over onto this board.  It didn't.

3.  At what point will the Ikonboard be shut off or inaccessible?  Not all posts are cross-posting; some appear at both boards, others do not.  We all need to be on the same page.  Basically it's going to involve double posting for pertinent science stuff (to keep both boards up-to-date), like the MERs...and that'll become a bit inconvenient.  sad

Re: New Message Board Software

The posts on this board is put into a giant database, more or less. The posts are periodically backed up. Josh transfers the back ups to the other board.

When the new board is ready to go live, Josh will shut down this board so no more new posts will be allowed (or saved, whatever) and from that cut off point, all posts will be transfered to the new board.

The other board is still in testing, and is a complete mess. I don't think any who post there now should expect to have their posts saved since transfering the board may very well copy over any exsisting threads where there is a conflict between posting times.

I'm sure he can explain it better, but the end result is you shouldn't worry. Post here, and it will transfer to the other board when it is finally ready for deployment.

Or don't, whatever.

Re: New Message Board Software

Yeah, sorry if it wasn't clear Cindy. I thought I'd mentioned that I was just doing testing over there, and just making sure I *could* do this, rather than causing everyone hassle. Going from one database to another is not very easy, and I have had a bit of problems doing it. I didn't really have to ramble about my working on it publicly, but I wanted testers, and it seems Rxke has been invaluable at that (along with clark and yourself, thanks guys for having a go).

So what you see over there on the other forum is pretty much a 3-4 day old *backup* of the IkonBoard. clark explained it well enough. What I do is make a backup of these forums, use some magic conversion software (losing only 70 or so "unviewable" posts in the process), and upload that new database to the new forums.

I'm done now, I have everything done just the way I want it. I will do it tonight in about 6 hours (heh, 5 hours of which will be rebuilding the freaking search database, think I'll start that at midnight, and take a nap!). In the morning, look forward to a new forum! I hope the change is accepted. I think we've been talking about it long enough so that everyone knows, but yeah.

I'll look for a nice Mars theme to use for the forums, but we may have a vote-off as to the "new look." We'll have to see. Right now I have to work on cleaning up what I have done, and. Deleting everything and doing it again from scratch. Mawh.

Re: New Message Board Software

Thank you Josh for your invaluable service, for your selfless volunteering, and for your patience (which will be tested even more) to come.

If you didn't do it, I doubt it would be done.

I look forward to the brave new world you are leading the new mars community into! From the cyber wilderness you shall make a blooming garden, roses, daffodils, weeds and all.

You're a good guy. And thanks.

But if you ever mention I said this, I'll deny it.  big_smile

But yeah, content. It's going to be great.

Re: New Message Board Software

Am I really going to have to be the first one to pop the cherry on this thing? I see all you guys online, but no one is posting, what a shame. All this for nothing. Guess it's time to delete the boards and go back to IkonBoard...

Impatient much are you?

Wait till the morning crew gets in.

I might add that the address seems to have changed, so people may be lost if they have this place as a favorite page, or if the Mars society link is not up yet.

Anyone talk to the webmaster over at Command Central Zubrin?

Can you modify the old web addy to redirect here, or to post a sentence saying where this has moved to?

yay for Josh!

For a moment i thought something went wrong, board being offline for hours....

I think keeping the old board AND being able to add content here will be... confusing for a lot of people. If not for the mods, how will you keep this board current?

I'd say: out with the old, ASAP, just redirect people, phpbb is a triied and tested platform, so no need for a 10 day trial, if it doesn't break after a couple of hours, it should be ok.

One thing: change the phpbb image upperleft with the NMars logo?

Re: New Message Board Software

Um...

Major SNAFU in the making: old ikonboard link gives 'server error,' so peoplle cllicking their old link do not get any info or redirect...
and maybe wors: the new Mars WEBSITE does not link to the right forums, so if you clikck any link there you again get the server error.

I had to go and browse my history to find the link to these boards... Not good...
