#176 Re: Space Policy » Chinese Space Program? - What if they get there first » 2005-08-14 23:58:12

It would need a champion with a lot of engineering ability and a lot of political tact and clout similar to Koroleyev or Von Braun.

And the have to achieve rendevous and soft land a probe somewhere before 2010 to have a shot at a race.

For everybody who believes in the cost factor, what would be your estimate of the development cost of the Commanche Stealth Helicopter?

Some New Zealand engineers just finished their stealth chopper (UAV) for $40 million Stealth Chopper

#177 Re: Human missions » Long duration Human space missions - Can we survive them? » 2005-08-14 23:16:01

I just assumed nobody was taking this thread seriously anymore and tried to join in the light hearted banter with some ironic mishashing of the thread.

I was following the technical debate, such that it maybe, as carefully as possible earlier though.

#178 Re: Human missions » Long duration Human space missions - Can we survive them? » 2005-08-14 23:02:46

I have to agree with Chazbro. There is no way current technology could be effectively used in space applications to achieve a rapid high payload transport system. All his arguments very clearly point to this conclusion.

The more energy a system puts out the larger it is given the same level of technology. But even technology has its limit based on material physics. This is basic chemistry GCNR, why can't you understand this?

#179 Re: Human missions » Dr. Griffin's new architecture » 2005-08-14 05:07:06

That first graph makes the Saturn look pretty darned spiffy, bigger payload, wider fairing, no solid boosters and its shorter than the 'magnum' and the 'longfellow'.

Surely the First stage could have a recoverable 'engine pod' or what not. What would a Saturn lift with SRB boosters (lets play keep the shuttle army), could it make 150 or 160 ton?

#180 Re: Human missions » International Space Agency (ISA) » 2005-08-13 18:54:07

So... what has the ISA achieved in.... 23 years of existence? Treaties with any countries? Secured sources of funding? Put together an elegant set of glossies? That website looks like something put together in a hurry overnight to get some sort of web presence up. 23 years should give you something more fun than that.

#181 Re: Human missions » International Space Agency (ISA) » 2005-08-13 17:00:23

Why is it a U.S. corporation? Shouldn't it be an independent country or something?

#182 Re: Human missions » Mission One: a one way ticket to Mars? » 2005-08-12 18:47:34

Couldn't it simply be a metal tube, say 100 metres long? With a plastic tube  running inside. If you kept the outer surface circular, to match the diameter of the hole then it could be easily removed when cold for replacement.

And you might not need to shut it down, just slow it down at night. You might need to reclaim heat at night depending on how finely balanced the heat situation is.

#183 Re: Human missions » Mission One: a one way ticket to Mars? » 2005-08-12 18:10:39

After you have taken corings around your base, could you insert long heat exchangers into the holes?

#184 Re: Martian Politics and Economy » Communism - Just like Star Trek » 2005-08-11 14:14:02

I prefer to govern myself, and not be governed by others.

You also probably prefer that other behaved in alike manner and not like right idiots.

The book of Judges records the Isreali experiment with such self-government. Leaders were not elected, they were naturally charasmatic people who just got followed. The book records that 'Everyone did what was right in their own eyes'.  Which is not so bad, until you consider that right in your eyes may be helpin g the pretty lady understand that she really didn't mean no.

Oh and they kept getting invaded.

#185 Re: Human missions » "Lily-Livered Pansies," huh? » 2005-08-11 14:02:38

Some tiles would have to be a deep purple to re-radiadiate heat most effectively.

#186 Re: Martian Politics and Economy » Communism - Just like Star Trek » 2005-08-09 00:59:32

You sound like Dueteronomy. Except they figure you violated your right to life.

#187 Re: Human missions » The Final Shuttle Mission » 2005-08-06 21:49:38

They would be more valuable to humanity being distributed around the country to inspire the next generation. We can afford new testbeds, but only if the people want believe in it.

#188 Re: Meta New Mars » WIKI: We now have a useable wiki... » 2005-08-02 01:05:43

I have a lot of spare time, or rather single minded determination, so as soon as I figure out where the wiki is I will happily trawl through all the really ancient topics.

Alternativley I could start a thread of 'recyled wiki entries' and somebody else can put them in. I do wish Astronautix was on a wiki we could flog. Save a lot of time that would.

Also we need a biography section to seperate people from their main works. Like Zubrin should have his birthday, pioneered mars direct(link), founded the mars society(link), co-founder pioneer-rocketplane(link).

BTW. who is Ray Bradbury? Is he like KSR or Clarke?

#189 Re: Meta New Mars » New Message Board Software » 2005-08-01 02:51:22

I get that when I am away from ethernet for a month. A lot of reading...

Can't you just login again?

#190 Re: Human missions » STS-114 Mission Coverage and Discussion » 2005-08-01 00:45:39

At an academy in Texas, I bunked with five guys in a room slightly bigger than that description for a year. The bunks are stacked three high and are end-end. They pick people to deliberatley clash with your personality. We all graduated friends though, so I also don't buy into the psychology showstopper story.

#191 Re: Meta New Mars » WIKI: We now have a useable wiki... » 2005-07-31 01:55:08

All we need is a custom bbp code for wki links.

Will that make it automatic for keywords? Like if I type 'Zubrin' or 'Ares' or 'Project Orion' they get underlined without my interaction?

#192 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » We have been thinking wrong. » 2005-07-31 01:36:25

I wouldnt recommend it. If you do that to people, they are likely to go insane. Side effects could be very bad. Not in the slightest bit healthy. The last thing you want is a bunch of realy smart people going insane while they are incharge of a "bomb".

Wouldn't it be still normal for then. Like going near a black hole. The people who are affected won't know the diffrence but the ones out side will.

Its always other people who notice you're insane. You seldom ever know.

#193 Re: Human missions » STS-114 Mission Coverage and Discussion » 2005-07-31 01:28:26

My bad. I was under the impression that the SSME's were the items that were thought to be highest risk, before Challenger and Columbia.

Placing cargo on top with main engines on the bottom of the tank means you can't put OMS and RCS engines with the main engines, so no recoverable pod.

They have to come down sometime don't they? What would it take to recover the engines under the tank? Something to move the centre of drag to the rear, a shield to fend of melting chunks of tank, chutes and ....?

#194 Re: Civilization and Culture » Jung & Atrophy of Instinct » 2005-07-31 01:20:08

Yes but think of the neat propulsion systems we will develop in order to launch attacks in a timely fashion.

#195 Re: Meta New Mars » WIKI: We now have a useable wiki... » 2005-07-30 22:37:49

The link to the wiki works fine for me, and I don't see anything wrong with the database, so I dunno what happened for you Bill.

How many tech support staff does it take to change a light bulb?
'My light bulb is working fine and I have the same type of light bulb.' smile

Anyway...

Will the wiki be intergrated into the forum? That is will the database tie auto link terms in a post to the wiki? If you have ever used trillian then you know how wonderful such a function is.

If someone has never met a term you use they follow the link...

#196 Re: Human missions » STS-114 Mission Coverage and Discussion » 2005-07-30 15:35:22

Well now is the time to open the whole can of worms to find out what other technical issues have been swept under the rug. If we can't five them in the next five years then we need to have them clearly identified so the don't plauge the CEV, or even the SDV.

And how come none of the SSME's have ever exploded? I thought they were supposed to be time bombs?!?

#197 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » New Discoveries #5 - Deep space, galactic, solar system, etc. » 2005-07-30 03:46:11

Something bigger than Pluto, well that puts pressure on the Pluto/Planet classification for sure now.

And we need to figure out how to heat a planet with no sun...

#198 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Building your own Starship » 2005-07-30 01:56:52

The ISS has a life boat. Or it is meant to. Man the ISS suxor.

#199 Re: Civilization and Culture » Martial Law or Martians laws ??? » 2005-07-29 22:42:50

space madness and crime caused by cabin fever!?

Yes, but think of the tv ratings!

#200 Re: Human missions » STS-114 Mission Coverage and Discussion » 2005-07-29 14:12:49

What would a carbon fiber lamination of the Tank cost? (weight wise... you could build it out of Gold cheaper, but it would be to heavy...)

Such a lamination would allow you to cheap out on internal load carrying structure wouldn't it? To stop foam it would only need to be a single layer, but you could go to sandwhich construction with carbon foam coating and a chewy lithium alloy centre and maybe not gain any weight? Better than being really careful about spraying the foam.
