#176 Re: Space Policy » Chinese Space Program? - What if they get there first » 2002-12-16 16:14:44

I think its quite good that the Chinese are developing a space programme. After the cold war the Space Race slowed down and we really need a catylast (excuse spelling) to speed things up a bit.
Space programmes need an 'Energy Drink' to get them going again. I would personally support the Chinese space programme so it could build competetion again between the big countries and hopefully start a new space race. This has already been pointed out but I believe that it is a way to help the US government see that space is the future.

If I was an Astronaut I would really want to into space in a rocket with a sticker saying "Made in China" on it  tongue

#178 Re: Interplanetary transportation » warp drive - futuristic, but possible? » 2002-12-15 19:48:02

I always thought that travelling by warp slipping into some sort of parallel universe where the laws of physics as we know them don't apply, well, at least thats what the sci-fi programmes I watch say.  tongue

#180 Re: Mars Society International » MS in New Zealand - MS members in NZ » 2002-12-15 19:12:19

Does anyone know how many NZers there are in MS? If there are does anybody know any contact details?

I'm going to join soon when I get some money cos the exchange rate is harsh on the NZ dollar.

#181 Re: Not So Free Chat » Metric Conversion - Pros and Cons » 2002-12-15 18:58:52

In the 60's sometime NZ convert to the metric system completely over-night. It worked much better and the whole system did'nt crash like some people thought it would.

#183 Re: Space Policy » A Mass Mailing of "The Case For Mars" - Mass Mailing to Congressman » 2002-12-15 18:30:15

A thing about politicians, You can't send them one form with thousands of signatures, because its easy to stick your signature on a piece of paper with a letter some has already written. Like I was in England on holiday and this dude came up with a signature thing in the streets asking people if they want to sign a partition to release a random prisioner who was apperently innocent. I thought what the hell and signed it. tongue

It is a hell of alot more effective get everyone to write letters that are different from each other and send thousands of them off.

Islam, Christianity are both stemed from Judaism, I think.

Any way, the face of religion in the world is violence and all the negative things, eg the Catholic Priest scandals and the big supposed Islamic Jihad againest the west.
Most religious violence is performed by fanatics. If Osama Bin Laden was truly a Muslim he would'nt tell all his followers to kill Americans and westerners on sight because that is againet Islam. Also the same with the IRA, if they truly were prodestant or Catholic they would'nt have been killing each other. In Israel, the Palestinans vs the Jews, its the same thing there as well. There are people who follow religions that are 'sane,' like not every Muslim is a suicide bomber. Because of the acts of a few terrorists and fanatics religions get a bad name. Since 9/11 there has been alot of unfair persecution againest moderate Muslims who have nothing to do with Al-Queda.

I'm a Christian, right, and I read the Bible and stuff, I don't think that it all to be taken literally. Like in Genesis when it says God created the world in 6 days, it does'nt specify how long those days are. Naturally we assume that they are standard earth days, but they are relatively short and the solar system was in the process of being made so in theory we did'nt have days. More likely it would be 'universe days' which would be considerably longer and would probably 6 'universe days' was plently of time to create the earth. Also the things that were created on the specific days pretty much in order with the 'evolution' of the solar system and life. So maybe thats what the Bible is saying, I dunno, thats just my 2 cents.

But I suppose when It comes to beliefs its 'each-to-his-own' and you don't have the right to impose what you believe on others.

#185 Re: Human missions » Is Mars really habitable? - Living in reduced gravity conditions. » 2002-12-15 17:12:25

I did'nt mean literally crushed, It was figurative.
But it would be a crushing sensation which would make every-day taskes quite difficult.

I think there's a real danger that someone born on Mars might never be able to visit Earth.

Yeah,
I heard somewhere that the pressure pressing down on us was about the wieght of a small car. I dunno how much a small car weighs but im guessing about 500 to 750 kg which is quite a bit.

If you were born on Mars with a gravity of about a 3rd of that it would be about *gets out calculator* 166.5 to 249.75 kg. If a Martian person decieded to go to Earth after being on Mars he/she would be like crushed under 3 times the wiegh his/her body were used to carrying, which would probably stuff up pretty much every system in his/her body.

I think thats right.

#189 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Project Orion Revisited. - Why not an Earth Launch? » 2002-12-15 15:46:47

Let me get this right, I'm only 14 and this stuff is like whoosh over my head. :-P

Anti-matter is pretty much the same as conventional matter except that the charges of the electrons and stuff is opposite.

Is that right? Could some-one elaborate it a bit more for me so that I can understand.

Thanx.

#190 Re: New Mars Articles » Mars Colonization on a Super-tight Budget - My variation on Mars Direct for a colony » 2002-12-15 15:06:06

Yo everybody, this is my first post.  smile

I personally don't like the idea of sending such a small amount of crew up to Mars, because, what if a couple of them are doing whatever they will be doing up there and there is an accident and a few of them are killed. That would be devastating,
it would kill of a large proportion of the crew and the psychological effects on the crew that survived would be massive.

I dunno if thats already been stated cos I could'nt be bothered to read the rest of the thread before posting.  tongue
