Hi everyone,

MarsNews.com was founded in 1999 as a project of the Mars Society's Seattle chapter.  Over the last 16 years, it has been lovingly maintained by Dustin Green and James Burk, and has grown to hold over 7000 article abstracts+links.  The site also links to NewMars.com with its prominent "Forums" link in its header menu.

Presently we are working on a new version of the site and would like to get your input.  The core mission of the site is to be a "news index", aggregating the latest news about Mars from various sources on the web.  In addition, there are some content pages for each of the historical, present, and future missions, with links to articles about them.  A third and lesser priority is to have special features such as the Mars Weather Center and Time on Mars (both pages are not current and thus have been hidden.)

How would you improve the site?  What types of content would make you a regular visitor?

Post your thoughts here or email them to contactus@marsnews.com

Thanks,

We've updated the software on the board.  Make sure when you login, that you check "Remember Me".  If this still happens, please reply with your Browser and OS versions.

Hi all,

NewMars.com was down for several days (maybe longer for some folks) due to Google flagging us for malware.  I have communicated with Google on this matter and resolved the issue.  We are running the latest version of Flux BB with all security patches, so we hope this will not happen again.  Still, the forum admins including myself will continue to deal with any threats to keeping this forum running & an open place for discussions.

Thanks,
-James

Hi Falkor,

I was referring to the restoration of the 2-3 years of posts when I said "Unfortunately it is not going well.  We have 90 GB of MySQL *.bin log files, but no database schema to restore them with."

That is still the case.  I have the files which I can share out but we need somebody with some mad SQL skills to reconstruct the DB from just these log files.  I have talked to a few people and they say it can be done, but I have not been able to do it myself and havent found anybody else who has been willing to try.

"The gratitude of an entire Nation will be with you." if somebody (maybe somebody reading this) could successfully accomplish this task.

#110 Re: Meta New Mars » NewMars.com Editorial Board Nominations Closed » 2013-02-11 16:25:54

I hereby nominate the following three individuals to the Editorial Board of the New Mars Forums:

Richard Wagner
Adrian Hon
Josh Cryer

Richard Wagner is the founder of the New Mars Journal and served as its primary editor in 1998-99 during the founding of the Mars Society.  It was the Mars Society's official online magazine in those days. You can view past examples of his work here (unfortunately not all of these links have the images associated)
http://web.archive.org/web/200012012244 … wmars.com/

http://web.archive.org/web/199812120313 … wmars.com/
http://web.archive.org/web/199901251016 … wmars.com/
http://web.archive.org/web/199902080151 … wmars.com/
http://web.archive.org/web/199902100955 … wmars.com/

Adrian Hon won the Hakluyt Prize for his letter in support of Mars Exploration.  He was active in the Mars Society's UK chapter and Youth chapter.  He later helped transition the New Mars Journal into an active forums system for the Mars Society.

Josh Cryer has been the unofficial and official forum administrator since the beginning of the New Mars forums, and more recently has been invaluable in the restoration and upkeep of the current forums system.  In addition, he has served as a moderator in several of our forums and created our current set of forum rules.

I feel that these individuals, all of huge stature, would be of tremendous value in the continued improvement of the New Mars Journal & Forums.

Thanks,

James Burk

Hi all,

Please post your editorial board nominations here.  You can put in your self nomination if you include the following:

- What you hope to bring to the New Mars journal & forums
- Relevant skills and/or experience
- Are you a current or former member of the Mars Society?  (ie, have you ever been a member of the Mars Society).  Please list any other space organization or chapters you have also been active with.

The folks at Mars Society HQ are reviewing all nominations and will announce the board at the 2013 Mars Society convention in August 2013.

Thanks,

NewMars.com is owned by the Mars Society; we pay for the hosting and domain registration. New Mars started in 1998 as the New Mars Journal and later morphed into our forums system. The web team for the Mars Society is currently responsible for keeping the forums updated and secure. We are completely open to suggestions on how to improve these forums and make them more integrated with our website and other space groups' efforts.

#115 Re: Meta New Mars » New Mars Malware/Google Stamp of Disapproval » 2013-02-09 16:11:55

We were hit by another one of these.  I went ahead and took down the forums so I could do a full cleanup of the newmars.com directory on the server.  I installed the newest FluxBB and restored the database.  We should be good now.

In the future you can report these types of issues to webmaster@marssociety.org -- that will open a ticket and somebody on the web team for the Mars Society (me included) will take a look at it.

Thanks,
-James

#116 Re: Meta New Mars » New Mars Malware/Google Stamp of Disapproval » 2012-11-20 12:43:50

I cant seem to find any error in the posts they have flagged in Google Webmaster Tools.  I requested that they re-review the site.  I will stay on this until they remove the flag.

#117 Re: Meta New Mars » The great crash » 2012-10-01 23:41:53

Unfortunately it is not going well.  We have 90 GB of MySQL *.bin log files, but no database schema to restore them with.  We will need to reconstruct the original database schema, then play back the 90GB of log files into it.  It is going to take some time, and it is somewhat beyond both my & Josh's technical ability to make this happen.  We need somebody who is a real MySql geek to assist us.  Any takers?

Hi all,

We have temporarily disabled avatar images so we can do some maintenance on our image directories.  We should have the avatars turned back on within a couple of weeks, maximum.

Thanks,

#119 Re: Meta New Mars » The great crash » 2012-08-29 22:28:52

We have recovered a set of MySQL files from the old server.  We are hopeful the NewMars.com forums data from 2007-2011 is in there.  I am working on this with Josh Cryer and we hope to have this data restored very soon.

#120 Re: Meta New Mars » Rebirth of New Mars; Establishment of New Mars Editorial Board » 2012-08-19 00:11:39

We are about a week or so away from sending the Editorial Board invites.  We will be using either Google Groups or a Drupal Commons-based website to host the Editorial Board.  So far I will be inviting Richard Wagner, Adrian Hon, Susan Martin (Exec Director of TMS and editor of TMQ), Michael Stoltz (PR director for TMS) and Josh Cryer (newmars forums co-admin with me).  I will be on the board as a staff member, probably non-voting, or at least quiet.

If you are interested in getting one of these invites, please email me with your interest & qualifications.  Thanks,

#121 Re: Meta New Mars » Origins of newmars » 2012-08-19 00:07:33

I recently contacted both Richard Wagner and Adrian Hon.  FYI.  I will be sending invites to both of them for the Editorial Board but I am not sure they will be active folks.  They both seem to have other stuff going on that is more important to them then NewMars.  I could be wrong though smile

Hi Andreas,

I passed this offer along to our Mars Simulation team, that is the only one I know that might be interested.  I have an upcoming meeting for the folks at Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) and will mention it also.

Thanks,

I'm writing this on my old computer, but I have to give it up in a few days. Any suggestions?

I agree, you should try Firefox or Google Chrome if you haven't already.  Please let me know if this fixes the issue.  If not, I would be happy to help you troubleshoot.  You can email or call me

I am helping out with the Mars Desert Research Station which is a Mars analogue research base near Hanksville, Utah.  There are new crews rotating through there every 2 weeks.  The current field season is running until May 2013.  See this thread for the most recent website info.

(Original Post:)
I was at the steering committee meeting a couple weeks ago when the Mars Society leadership agreed to upgrade the MDRS and rebuild the websites.   Dr. Zubrin and others are calling it "MDRS 2.0" (although Im sure some might quibble with that).

I am currently working on a new crew / mission support website which they will use for routine work.  If you are interested in helping out -- right now we are trying out Drupal Commons software on there -- let me know.  (Ed: we are now using Google platform tools and custom software at the Hab.)
