#51 Re: Mars Society International » 2017 Mars Society Convention » 2017-09-19 12:04:07

Conference was amazing.

We are posting videos to Youtube and photos to Flickr.  I am posting the Banquet video today.  it was the best one ever.  I posted my favorite panel (NASA's direction) yesterday.

A lucky few of us got to tour JPL on Monday after the conference.  Clean rooms.  Mission Control.  HOLOLENS VR with today's rover data.  Was amazing.  I have photos of this also on Flickr.  I also have video of everything but I haven't had time yet to review it.  We saw & heard a lot of cool stuff.  We were there for 5 hours.

Been super busy since I've been back.  Zubrin is doing a telecon tomorrow night to promote Bridenstine nomination support.  Also we are getting Marspedia going with with Moon Society & Mars Foundation.    Several chapters are being formed or re-formed.

Lots of cool stuff happening.

Yeah and I see people quitting the Mars Society now over Dr. Zubrin's comments.  Everybody needs to settle down.  In my opinion, he seems like an awesome candidate for NASA administrator, given his actual views on space (not on climate change) and the legislation he proposed last year is widely respected.

Robert Zubrin: New NASA Administrator Appointee “A Good Choice”

Mars Society Founder & President Dr. Robert Zubrin has called for the approval of Congressman Jim Bridenstine (R-OK) as the new NASA administrator.

Bridenstine has focused heavily on space policy during his tenure in Congress, stating “[o]ur very way of life depends on space, the way we communicate, the way we navigate, the way we produce food and energy, the way we conduct banking.” In April 2016 at the 32nd Annual Space Symposium, Bridenstine introduced H.R. 4945, the American Space Renaissance Act, comprehensive reform legislation with provisions affecting national security, civil, and commercial space policy.

In addition, Bridenstine has proposed legislation related to the regulatory process overseeing certain non-traditional space activities, and helped secure funding for the Federal Aviation Administration’s Office of Commercial Space Transportation. Recognizing his efforts, in 2015 SpaceNews named Bridenstine as one of five game changers in the world in space.

Commenting on the appointment and the controversy it has aroused, Dr. Zubrin said: “The fracas over the Bridenstine nomination for NASA administrator is unfortunate and unnecessary. Bridenstine is actually a rather good choice for NASA administrator. He is not only a Navy reserve pilot, but a long-time strong space advocate who really wants a space program that is going somewhere, which is exactly what NASA needs. His appointment should be welcomed. Readers of my political columns should know that I am anything but inclined to be supportive of Donald Trump, but the only serious ground for criticism of this appointment is that it was long overdue.”

The Bridenstine nomination now goes to Congress for approval. If you wish to have input into the decision, you can reach  out to your congressman and Senators through the Capitol Hill switchboard. The number to call is 202-224-3121.

Dave had sent this in Feb of 2016 for last years convention, but we were having an issue with the abstracts alias at the time and it bounced.  It has since been fixed.  Dave, did you ever resubmit?  I saw you had sent this to me & Zubrin in a word doc form a couple times.  I think you have to send it to the abstracts alias for it to be official.

Anybody else going to the Convention?  I will be there, doing various activities such as coordination of the webcasting and videography efforts.

But you make some other good points about the people that are against white supremecists being just as bad and just as prejudiced and judgemental.  I find it all hard to watch sometimes.

Also I agree about giving proper respect to the South.  Even though they lost the Civil War (or as most Southerners call it more accurately, "The War Between The States"), they hold a place in American history.  Most young people today know less about history & geography than my generation (Gen X) when we were their age, and I thought my generation was terrible about those.  Overall, Americans should be more respectful of each other and our differences of opinion, including and especially being respectful of others who we disagree with.

Welcome!  Always glad to see new folks on the forum!

#61 Re: Mars Society International » Marspedia » 2017-08-28 17:51:16

That is 100% true.  The wiki has not been maintained and they had turned off new users for several years due to spam.  I am currently combatting the spam problem since I turned them back on when I moved it over to our server.

#62 Re: Mars Society International » Marspedia » 2017-08-27 22:17:32

Marspedia.org is now updated with all the security patches, and we've turned back on the ability for new user accounts to be created. It's now running on Mars Society hardware too.

We plan to continue to make improvements and expand it.

#63 Re: Not So Free Chat » Ask Robert Zubrin *Official Thread* » 2017-08-27 22:15:21

Hi all,

I will be interviewing Dr. Zubrin at the convention to create some video footage that we can later use for promotional videos and other purposes.

So I have to come up with a bunch of questions to ask him. So I was reminded of this thread smile. Please continue to add to it and I will be sure and get your questions answered (on video!)

#64 Re: Mars Society International » Very Cunning Amendments - Prototype Settlements Preempted » 2017-08-17 22:33:10

I just read this thread (and its initial post) for the first time.  The idea that the Mars Society doesn't want to build a prototype Martian settlement (on Mars) is silly.  All of the current major activities of the Mars Society are geared towards learning how to create analog research bases and all of the research/logistics/human factors around them so that we can later build (or inform who is going to build) one of these on Mars.  That's what we're all about -- settling Mars, one step at a time, including with a prototype first settlement.

#65 Re: Mars Society International » Marspedia » 2017-08-17 22:05:02

Yes! It is very exciting indeed.  I spend most of today learning about modern MediaWiki installations and how we can improve.  Please email me if you are interested in volunteering to help out in these early stages.  We will have a test version of the wiki that you can have 'early access' to.  (I feel like Valve and Steam games right now).

The Mars Society will be taking over ownership and maintenance of Marspedia.org.

Presently we are planning out a software update and migration to a new web host.

In the coming weeks, we'll need help from volunteers to review and modernize the content of the wiki.

I have all of the old NewMars Wiki content as well, I might restore that somewhere so we can merge the two.

Exciting times!

#67 Re: Not So Free Chat » Ask Robert Zubrin *Official Thread* » 2017-07-25 14:32:38

The CAPCOMs are typically volunteers who take 2-3 hours shifts every night when a crew is at the MDRS and they monitor communications and provide any assistance the crew needs.  The crew is bandwidth limited at MDRS so sometimes the Capcoms can do basic research for them or coordinate resolving a logistical issue.

We always need more CAPCOMs so if anybody is interested (the next field season starts in Dec), then contact Shannon Rupert (srupert@marssociety.org)

#71 Re: Meta New Mars » The great crash » 2017-07-11 00:41:47

@RobertDyck I think you may be right about the addins for formulae, as the errors I was seeing were string-processing related.  I sent you all the details so let me know if you can figure things out.  If not, I will have time next weekend.

@SpaceNut yes I did a make/make install for the exact MySQL version (5.0.51a) that was being used and it worked flawlessly and I was able to put all the files I received from the crashed server's actual HD into the appropriate directory and all of them were accessible.  I have everything (EVERYTHING) from that server now including the NewMars wiki, actual website files for FMARS/MDRS/Chapters/etc, and all Mars Society data, etc etc etc.

The server crash back in 2011 was a setback for sure, but NewMars and the Mars Society and its projects are stronger than ever.

...At least i think so and I will continue to push push push as much as I can as long as I am alive.  Mars or Bust!

#72 Re: Meta New Mars » The great crash » 2017-07-08 01:06:23

Hi guys,

This is a hard technical problem but I am hopeful it will be solved.  I have a working instance of phpBB with all the posts & users.  I am having issues converting that to FluxBB (which is prereq so I can easily prep a block of SQL that can be imported into this FluxBB instance).  I will keep at it but it's going to take longer than I thought.

If you want to help with this, please email me and I can show you what I have so far.  (Or if you just want to see some of the posts, I can give you the URL but I don't want to post it here since it is only temporary.)

I will test everything thoroughly before I do the merge.

#75 Re: Meta New Mars » The great crash » 2017-07-06 00:45:20

I have everything loaded into phpBB and I'm running the conversion to FluxBB now.   Here's some stats:

Last post on the crashed server:
Mon Jan 03, 2011 10:49 pm

Last post on here that was restored from our earlier backup.
Wednesday, May 28, 2008 10:45:58 PM

First new post on here after we restored the forums:
Saturday, November 19, 2011 10:44:14 PM

So, we'll be getting over 2.5 years of restored posts (everything between May 28, 2008 and Jan 3, 2011)

Will probably take me a few days to get this completed since I have to painstakingly merge in the users & posts tables to our current install without breaking anything.  I will do this on a test instance and make sure it works before I do it for real.  Stay tuned...
