#3926 Re: Terraformation » Terraforming Venus - The Latest Thinking » 2007-09-15 10:10:39

Permenant snot?

What about setting up an exchange with Earth. Earth sends water for food crops under domes. Plants use up load of CO2. Venus swops the plants for water.

#3927 Re: Terraformation » Ceres » 2007-09-15 09:46:51

That would be so cool to have gas bags that you could just float in. If you stuck little islands in to live on...

#3928 Re: Planetary transportation » Trains on Mars - Could a rail system provide martian need » 2007-09-09 11:18:20

Hydrogen filled Airships, then switch to helium when Mars is terraformed. The low martian gravity would mean less gas is needed. It would float on the CO2 easily. The gas bags wouldn't need to be that big.

#3929 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Antimatter Propulsion - Could Antimatter be used for propulsion? » 2007-09-09 07:56:08

NewScientist did an article on this.

Would it be energy wasteful to accelerate particles in an accelerator to near the speed of light and fire them out the end.

Finally, being at the speed of light is supposedly the same as being near a singularity. The laws of physics break down near singularities. The laws of physics are the only thing stopping you going faster than the speed of light.

Training underwater in the deep sea would be nessercery.

Maybe having big vats of hyper-efficient algae to pump the atmosphere through. That would convert the CO2 to O2 and Carbon. Get it down to a level whare trees could takeover and you will actually be getting a useful product. Perhaps composting the algea for the soil?

#3931 Re: Terraformation » Ceres » 2007-09-09 07:19:16

A terraformed Ceres could not hold onto any atmosphere without being bagged, and in any case it would not be a fit place for humans as the gravity would be too low.

You seem big on the bagging idea. Titan isn't bagged and it's got a really thick atmosphere.

#3932 Re: Terraformation » Spinning asteroid in a gas bag » 2007-09-09 07:14:54

So you want to hollow it out and live on the inside. Then what is the point of the gasbag? Just make the asteroid airtight with the waste materiels, add an airlock... congratulations, you have an o'neill habitat. With thicker walls for radiation protection.

#3933 Re: Terraformation » Spinning asteroid in a gas bag » 2007-09-08 06:40:37

Hello, anyone there? Spinning an asteroid would just fling you off.

#3934 Re: Terraformation » Ceres » 2007-08-31 07:33:28

And then you have to provide electricity. A submersible with an outside temperature of 50c should soon melt it's way down to the core. If the core's Iron it should start to spin, creating a magnetic field, once the Ice around has been melted. If it isn't then it shouldn't be to hard to give it enough Iron. Then we can take most of the water away, replace the mantle with something, and you're over half way there. Then trap a comet in orbit and your done.

#3935 Re: Mars Society International » Ceres Society » 2007-08-30 10:53:17

How could I go about setting up a society for the exploration and colonization of Ceres. Could anyone help me?

#3936 Re: Terraformation » Ceres » 2007-08-30 09:34:12

Simply coating the rocky core with Iron (or Nickle, if it's magnetic) would make a magnetic field.

#3937 Re: Terraformation » Ceres » 2007-08-30 05:22:51

Build a space elevator and pump iron/nickle into the mantle. Maybe with radioactive waste we can keep it liquid. If we replace the core with Iron we'll get a magnetic field. Water vapor for warming is no object.

#3938 Re: Terraformation » Ceres » 2007-08-30 05:09:41

What about replacing the ice with iron. Then the rotation will give you the magnetic field. You won't have to keep power going to it. Making the planet heavier must be good, to.

#3939 Re: Planetary transportation » Given the recent rennaissance in Venutian Cloud Cities here » 2007-08-28 08:00:12

What about half-way between orbit and a baloon, perhaps with a back up rocket in case it starts sinking to launch it into orbit.

#3940 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Shipyards » 2007-08-28 07:18:41

But ESA still have to rely on the US or Russia to launch it.

#3941 Re: Terraformation » Ceres » 2007-08-28 07:14:50

Spinning it would just fling you off.

Would it be possible to replace say about half, maybe all of, the Ice mantle with iron (molten or otherwise.) Not only as Ceres rotates would it provide a magnetic field, it would also make Ceres heavier (more gravity?)

#3942 Re: Civilization and Culture » So what about Mars is appealing to you? » 2007-08-27 13:38:16

I don't find Mars appealing, I find Ceres appealing. For a start I own it and secondly it's smaller.

#3943 Re: Civilization and Culture » An Ethics Exam for Mars Citizenship - If you were rejected, what would you do? » 2007-08-27 13:30:30

Anyway, back to topic...

I'd just say "Fine, I don't want to go to Mars anyway. I'd rather go to Ceres because I actually own it.

#3945 Re: Youth Group / Educational Outreach » Teenage View on Iraq - Issue?  Don't care? » 2007-08-27 12:10:49

I support the Iraq war 100%. Any war to remove someone who killes his own people in Iron Maidens deserves to go.
And I support Israel. If people would actually bother to read the Koran they would see what the so called 'religon of peace' really is.

#3946 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Shipyards » 2007-08-27 12:01:36

I don't see Britain doing anything. Or ESA.

#3947 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Shipyards » 2007-08-27 07:23:29

What about having orbital shipyards in orbit to cut down on the costs of launching. It would use resources from the moon and asteroids to cut down on costs of resources from Earth.

#3948 Re: Martian Politics and Economy » War » 2007-08-27 06:46:41

Eventually it will probably get to a point where there is a Martian war of independence. The orbital shipyards would be used for building fighters. What methods could prevent it?

#3949 Re: Terraformation » Spinning asteroid in a gas bag » 2007-08-27 06:26:44

No-ones doing anything to my asteroids without my permission.

Anyway, you would use metal asteroids sa source of metal for habitats on other asteroids.

#3950 Re: Terraformation » Ceres » 2007-08-27 06:21:39

First off I would like to tell everyone that I have claimed all the astroids. I did it before Ceres became a dwarf planet so I own it as well.

What would I have to do to terraform Ceres? And what about terraforming smaller asteroids to provide food to the rest of the system?
