#3901 Re: Martian Politics and Economy » Land Allowance » 2007-10-13 14:17:51

The first colonists should be given land stakes of a certain amount of land (say, 100 square kilometres?) Eventually all the land would be gone and people would start to settle in each 'nation.'

#3903 Re: Interplanetary transportation » What Would A Space Shuttle System Look Like If Built Today? » 2007-10-13 10:57:45

How much for a fully reusable craft? It cost 25 mil to develop a fully reusable suborbitle craft that can carry 2 passengers (SpaceShipOne.)

#3904 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Acceleration Gravity » 2007-10-13 10:53:17

Would it be economical to acclerate at 1-2 g for half the journey, turn the craft round, and deccelerate at that g?

And how much g can humans stand for a long time, anyway?

#3905 Re: Terraformation » Terraforming Neptune » 2007-10-13 10:35:03

The main problem with terraforming seems to be an excess of carbon. CO2 seems pretty abundant, as does Hydrogen, so water is no object. The gas giants are made of Hydrogen and Helium so the best planetary transportation would be helium filled airships.

#3906 Re: Interplanetary transportation » PAEs » 2007-10-07 08:21:41

But it's kind of impossible to know what it's like at or near light speed because currently we can't get to it.

#3907 Re: Life support systems » Designer Humans » 2007-10-07 08:18:21

Two reasons Against.

Moral: Genetic Engineering humans brings up the yuk factor in nearly everyone.

Technical: We are no where near that level of sophistication yet. There could be unforseen defects. We aren't even a level 1 civilisation yet.

#3908 Re: Interplanetary transportation » PAEs » 2007-10-07 07:00:47

What about my second question about FTL?

#3909 Re: Human missions » New mars plan » 2007-10-07 06:58:53

Er... what do you mean by another Mars plan?

And what are your great ideas?

#3910 Re: Human missions » Space stations beyond ISS » 2007-10-07 03:09:14

Am I talking to myself? What about a shipyard that could construct other stations and ships. If you are talking about moving my asteroids then you obviusly have identified the resource for the ships & stations.

#3911 Re: Terraformation » Terraforming Neptune » 2007-10-07 02:58:35

New Thread? Possiblity of Terraforming Neptune?

#3912 Re: Single Stage To Orbit » SSTO to mars and back again. » 2007-10-06 11:47:46

You want to use valuable Duetranium (H2)??

#3913 Re: Human missions » Space stations beyond ISS » 2007-10-06 11:36:10

The next station should be a Shipyard. Maybe having a big zero gravity construction area and hanger where the airlock would be. At each end of the cylindar would be spokes sticking out with the habs on. The radius of the cylindar, plus the spoke length, plus the hab height, would have to add up to 224 metres. The parts would all be launched unmanned so only one mission is needed for actual construction, another for all the resources. Airlocks would be placed in between each hab incase of puncture by meteroids and other debris. Also, if the oxygen is going down and no shipment can be scrambled, that area can be blocked off to live in until a ship arrives.

#3914 Re: Martian Politics and Economy » War » 2007-10-06 10:58:07

I thought this thread was about inter-planetary war.

#3915 Re: Interplanetary transportation » PAEs » 2007-10-06 10:45:34

Has anyone considered using Particle Accelorators for engines. The particles coming out of the back of the craft would be travelling at near the speed of light, which would accelerate the craft to those sorts of speeds.

On a related topic, the laws of physics supposedly break down at light speed. The laws of physics is the only thing preventing FTL.

#3916 Re: Terraformation » Terraforming Neptune » 2007-10-06 10:16:33

The moons or the planet. The planet to me sounds like a big super earth.

#3917 Re: Terraformation » Colonisation and terraforming order » 2007-09-29 11:41:33

Ceres. With all the cash I'll have when I'm older backing it it will happen.

#3918 Re: Terraformation » Terraforming techniques to combat global warming » 2007-09-29 11:27:58

You didn't leave a third box: I don't think it's humans fault. Anyway, what's this doing in a terraforming forum?

#3919 Re: Human missions » Mars 500 - simulated Mission » 2007-09-16 10:25:27

Pregnancy wouldn't happen with a mixed crew. With that amount of radiation they wouldn't be able to have children.

#3921 Re: Human missions » Branson Virgin Galactic » 2007-09-15 11:24:55

Millions of americans will be able to afford it. 1 out of every 125 ais a millionaire.

#3922 Re: Life support systems » Optimal air pressures.. - Which is best? More O2 or more pressure? » 2007-09-15 11:13:59

Maybe a pressure of about 50kPa, 40% O2, 40% He and 20% N2 would be a rather good atmosphere.

40% helium?!?!

*squeaks* Hi everybody, how are you today?

#3923 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » Traveling to Mars in one week! » 2007-09-15 10:58:09

That would mean you could get to Ceres in that time as well. Hehehehehe.

#3924 Re: Terraformation » Terraforming Venus - The Latest Thinking » 2007-09-15 10:50:10

But what about food? I know, Ceres swops water for food and carbon.

#3925 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Antimatter Propulsion - Could Antimatter be used for propulsion? » 2007-09-15 10:44:46

Did you read the article? The thing about fusion is it only needs a fraction of the antimatter, which, oh, happens to be hard to collect. I say we turn jupiter into an antimatter collection place, get enough to go to a star system with a planet much bigger, and use that system for antimatter production.
