#3801 Re: Terraformation » Terraforming - Worth the effort? » 2007-11-08 13:19:07

And if you terraform it you don't have to rely on tech to keep you alive (eg. if all the power goes you can still survive without energy hungry life support.)

#3802 Re: Intelligent Alien Life » Why any intelligent life will be inferior to us » 2007-11-05 04:37:22

Assuming they've built dyson spheres.

How come everyone seems to think that any intelligent life will be superior to s. They're probably thinking the same thing. Look at dolphins. They're at a lower stage of technological development. They're the second most intelligent species on the planet!

#3803 Re: Interplanetary transportation » H2O+UV » 2007-11-05 04:11:12

Ah, but what about factories? Solar panels are inefficient so my idea would be more efficient than using electrosis. You're using energy thaat would otherwise just go to waste.

#3804 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » Data Backup » 2007-11-04 15:39:59

I would really like to see a sattelite server in orbit that would contain all the info humanity has collected over millenia. This store would be accessible through hidden consoles in bunkers all over the world, so even if a nuclear war or some other disaster dumped humanity back in the stone age we'd still have all the data to climb back up again. Consider this as an analogy.

We've been climbing the cliff of progress for thousands of years. We have occasional points stuck it that we would fall to but they are to far below. Launching the sattelite would be putting in a bolt that goes higher with us so we go up but can't fall down.

And the typical Al-Gore home uses 22 times as much electricity as the average american home.

#3806 Re: Intelligent Alien Life » Why any intelligent life will be inferior to us » 2007-11-04 15:28:24

Everyone here is assuming that an alien life forum would create radio waves.

I agree. And on this alien life forum we aren't producing any radio waves.

But alien species will be only slightly better than us still.

#3807 Re: Interplanetary transportation » H2O+UV » 2007-11-04 15:09:16

Would this idea work? Steam is injected into a compartment where it is exposed to UV radiation from the sun. This splits the water into Hydrogen and oxygen, which is then combusted. This would get rid of having to use electroysis to get Hydrogen and oxygen to use as fuel and air.

#3808 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Nuclear Rockets » 2007-11-04 15:06:04

We can initiate fusion, we just can't control it. A modified pusher plate idea could explode Hydrogen bombs instead.

#3809 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Magnetic Acceleration Rings » 2007-11-04 13:40:39

That isn't what I have in mind. What I am thinking of is a ring that pulls the craft towards it accelerating them and then turns off, releasing the craft.

#3810 Re: Civilization and Culture » Low or Hi-Tech » 2007-11-03 02:43:09

Read my first post. What your saying is asumming Mars hasn't been Terraformed. I'm assuming it has by then.

#3811 Re: Unmanned probes » Cavern exploration » 2007-11-02 07:28:37

Zyder, your comment belongs in the nutty conspir- I mean, the Intelligent aen life forum.

#3812 Re: Not So Free Chat » Oil Prices Surge to Record Heights - 90 US Dollars » 2007-11-02 07:26:41

The market will take care of itself. Look at all the oil in Alaska. Soon they'll start pmping it all out and the price will go down again or at least stabilise.

#3813 Re: Civilization and Culture » Low or Hi-Tech » 2007-11-02 07:22:44

The forum made a mistake (not me, I'm never to blame.) It placed hi-tech as the question, not an answer. I tried to add it but it wouldn't let me.

#3814 Re: Intelligent Alien Life » Why any intelligent life will be inferior to us » 2007-11-01 07:55:25

Actually, the chances that we are the first is quite high. It takes that long for the universe to accumalate enough of the right materials, settle down, etc.

#3815 Re: Unmanned probes » Cavern exploration » 2007-11-01 07:52:33

Commodore was talking about a manned mission.

#3816 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Nuclear Rockets » 2007-11-01 07:49:39

I've been thinking about this idea. How about having a reactor providing energy for a Nuclear Thermal Rocket. The waste would be recycled in Breeder reactors. Then the waste from the breeder reactors decays and the energy taken from that. Interstellar gases could be scooped up to provide fuel for the NTR.

#3817 Re: Not So Free Chat » Oil Prices Surge to Record Heights - 90 US Dollars » 2007-11-01 07:45:23

Clark, here's an idea. If you don't like the country you're in, move over to the other side of the Atlantic. I'm sure Europe would like someone of your views.

#3818 Re: Terraformation » Artificial Planets » 2007-11-01 07:41:48

The idea behind a planet that could be de-terraformed would be to teach terraformation.

#3820 Re: Not So Free Chat » Oil Prices Surge to Record Heights - 90 US Dollars » 2007-10-31 11:11:32

Illegal immigrants by defination shouldn't have driving licences. A driving licence is a form of ID. Illegal immigrants don't show up on federal records, that is why they are illegal immigrants. If they become legal immigrants I'm fine with them having driving licences,

#3821 Re: Terraformation » Artificial Planets » 2007-10-31 09:43:21

How about a planet that could be terraformed, de terraformed, the terraformed by he next lot of trainee terraformers.

#3822 Re: Intelligent Alien Life » Why any intelligent life will be inferior to us » 2007-10-31 09:39:42

Not really. Most stars (nearly all) won't have enough of the right types of material to build habitable planets. My view is humanity is supposed to go and spread life to the stars.

#3823 Re: Civilization and Culture » Low or Hi-Tech » 2007-10-31 04:40:34

How about a mix? That is, combining hi-tech computing into lo-tech materials. Sort of, using wood as a building material.

#3824 Re: Terraformation » Artificial Planets » 2007-10-31 04:36:30

Try the Oort cloud for material. With all the iron it could be possible to customize the gravity and it would be easy to make a custom atmosphere for scientific experiments.

#3825 Re: Unmanned probes » New ideas for rovers » 2007-10-31 04:34:26

Like, sort of launch an automated factory/automining complex. Before that more rovers would have to be sent out to lay the solar cells or reactor but it would be very useful to have.
