Speaking of the Texas national Guard, about 3000 of them will be heading to Iraq by the end of this year. A good buddy of mine is one of them. He is 36 years old and has a 7 month old daughter. We are worried about him, but we are proud of him as he fights for freedom.

I have known him since 1980 and we have been through much together.

I thought the search was over for WMD, but after hearing http://sunny99.com/Lt%20Col%20Jim%20Stearns.mp3]this inteview with Lt. Col. Jim Stearns, who recently got back from Iraq and was in the ISG (Iraq Survey Group) says. He says they did find terrorist cells. And they found everything associated with WMD (documents, people, knowledge, facilities and ingredients to build WMD). He feels they are still there and it is a matter of time. HE thinks they are buried in the sands.

Sounds to me like the verdict is still out.

Listen to this interview. It is very good. Why don't we see more inteviews like this on the national media (This was local)?

I foresee a day when we have direct wireless interface from computers directly to our brain. Keyboards, mouse and other input devices will be obsolete, as will output devices like monitors.

But beware! Advertisers will try beaming spam to our brains.

Showing people sitting there while their brains are communicating with a ships computer would be boring. Remember Hollywood likes to entertain. That is why computers and other equipment always have lots of flashing lights.

No nuke drills for me in the 1970's, just tornado drills. I do remember aroun 1980 waking up to a loud explosion and thinking we were being nuked.

There was a time there when it wasn't a question of if there would be a nuke exchange between the US and USSR, but a question of when it will happen. That time was the early 80's and we had movies like War Games and Mad Max to fuel our fears.

I think 2001 is the only movie to correctly show that there is no sound in space.

I am forgiving of movies that do show sound in space. I think of it as artistic license. Plus the majority of people would think there is something wrong if an explosion in, lets say Star Wars, was silent.

I never saw Dark Star, but the title reminds me of one I forgot. I loved the move "The Black Hole".

I do have a problem with the way movies portray Black Holes. They are not really a hole, they are a sphere. Some are microscopic, and some larger. Material does not spiral down into it like water flowing down a drain (I guess they get this from the flat space model of Black Holes). Material would rotate and fall in much like it would falling onto a star or planet. Once it hits the event horizon, things start to get a little weird. The laws of physics get screwy.

Josh, the coolest thing about Mission to Mars was the Alien 3-D map of early Mars.

I went to the movie thrilled that they finally made a Mars exploration movie. I left disappointed. The 3 things that bothered me the most;

1. At the end of the movie we meet these Disney like peaceful aliens. Are these not the same aliens responsible for brutally killing the astronauts at the beginning of the movie?

2. Ignoring Newton’s law that an object in motion stays in motion until an outside force effect it. The whole scene where the wife couldn’t safe her husband because she didn’t have enough fuel was silly. Why did she stop halfway and say she didn’t have enough fuel to get to him. She was in Space! Once she got going, she could have coasted all the way there.

3. Ripping off the movie Abyss with the lame ending.

The movie had a ton of other problems, but those were the top three for me.

So when Red Mars came out I had my reservations about seeing that movie. I read the book first. I loved the book, Red Mars so I got the DVD. I liked it- the book was better.

Between the two. Mission to Mars was bad. Red Mars was good.

An experiment I would love to see is the release of water on the Mars surface, see how it flows in the thin air and .3 G’s. See how long it last and how it erodes. Of course the more water the better.

If only a comet would slam into Mars and we had a MER ready to land (Daydreaming).

Here is part one.

Cygnus X-1, Book One: The Voyage
By RUSH

Prologue:
In the constellation of Cygnus, there lurks a mysterious, invisible force: the black hole of Cygnus X-1....

Six Stars of the Northern Cross
In mourning for their sister's loss
In a final flash of glory
Nevermore to grace the night...

1.
Invisible to telescopic eye
Infinity, the star that would not die

All who dare to cross her course
Are swallowed by her fearsome force

Through the void
To be destroyed
Or is there something more?
Atomized...at the core?
Or through the Astral Door?
To soar...

2.
I set a course just east of Lyra
And northwest of Pegasus
Flew into the light of Deneb
Sailed across the Milky Way
On my ship, the "Rocinante"
Wheeling through the galaxies,
Headed for the heart of Cygnus
Headlong into mystery

The x-ray is her siren song
My ship cannot resist her long
Nearer to my deadly goal
Until the black hole
Gains control...

3.
Spinning, whirling,
Still descending
Like a spiral sea,
Unending...

Sound and fury
Drown my heart
Every nerve
Is torn apart...

To be continued...

More Rush

Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres

I. Prelude

When our weary world was young
The struggle of the ancients first began.
The gods of Love and Reason
Sought alone to rule the fate of Man.

They battled through the ages,
But still neither force would yield.
The people were divided,
Every soul a battlefield.

II. Apollo/Dionysus

Apollo: Bringer of Wisdom
"I bring truth and understanding,
I bring wit and wisdom fair,
Precious gifts beyond compare.
We can build a world of wonder,
I can make you all aware.
I will find you food and shelter,
Show you fire to keep you warm
Through the endless winter storm.
You can live in grace and comfort
In the world that you transform."

The people were delighted
Coming forth to claim their prize
They ran to build their cities
And converse among the wise.
But one day the streets fell silent,
Yet they knew not what was wrong.
The urge to build these fine things
Seemed not to be so strong.
The wise men were consulted,
And the Bridge of Death was crossed
In quest of Dionysus
To find out what they had lost.

Dionysus: Bringer of Love
"I bring love to give you solace
In the darkness of the night,
In the Heart's eternal light.
You need only trust your feelings;
Only love can steer you right.
I bring laughter, I bring music,
I bring joy and I bring tears.
I will soothe your primal fears.
Throw off those chains of reason
And your prison disappears."

The cities were abandoned,
And the forests echoed song.
They danced and lived as brothers;
They knew love could not be wrong.
Food and wine they had aplenty
And they slept beneath the stars.
The people were contented
And the gods watched from afar.
But the winter fell upon them
And it caught them unprepared,
Bringing wolves and cold starvation,
And the hearts of men despaired.

III. Armageddon: The Battle of Heart and Mind

The universe divided
As the Heart and Mind collided,
With the people left unguided
For so many troubled years.
In a cloud of doubts and fears,
Their world was torn asunder into hollow
Hemispheres.

Some fought themselves, some fought each other,
Most just followed one another
Lost and aimless like their brothers
For their hearts were so unclear
And the truth could not appear
Their spirits were divided into blinded
Hemispheres.

Some who did not fight
Brought tales of old to light.
"My Rocinante sailed by night
On her final flight."
To the heart of Cygnus' fearsome force
We set our course
Spiralled through that timeless space
To this immortal place.

IV. Cygnus: Bringer of Balance

I have memory and awareness,
But I have no shape or form.
As a disembodied spirit,
I am dead and yet unborn.
I have passed into Olympus
As was told in tales of old,
To the city of Immortals,
Marble white and purest gold...

I see the gods in battle rage on high...
Thunderbolts across the sky...
I cannot move, I cannot hide...
I feel a silent scream begin inside...

Then all at once the chaos ceased
A stillness fell, a sudden peace
The warriors felt my silent cry
And stayed their struggle, mystified.

Apollo was atonished;
Dionysus thought me mad.
But they heard my story further
And they wondered, and were sad.

Looking down from Olympus
On a world of doubt and fear,
Its surface splintered
Into sorry Hemispheres.

They sat a while in silence,
Then they turned at last to me:
"We will call you Cygnus,
The god of Balance you shall be."

V.The Sphere: A Kind of Dream

We can walk our road together
If our goals are all the same.
We can run alone and free
If we pursue a different aim.
Let the Truth of Love be lighted,
Let the Love of Truth shine clear. Sensibility,
Armed with sense and liberty,
With the Heart and Mind united in a single
Perfect
Sphere.

#266 Re: Life on Mars » Life on Mars... Should we care? - I say no, terraform the place! » 2004-08-20 13:38:07

REB

If we find life on Mars, I bet it is related to Earth-life. I am still betting some microbes have arrived on Mars from the Earth either by meteors or probes.

If Mars life is found, and it turns out to be unique from Earth life then we need to study it extensively. If it is just microbes, that have not evolved in millions or billions of years, I say place them in a Mars microbe zoo, freeze some, and terraform the place. Why? If they have not evolved past microbes in the first four billion years of the Sun’s life, they will probably not evolve the last four billion years of the Sun’s life.

Now if there turns out to be unique Mars life that is more complex than microbes, then we need to tread lightly. Once studied, we would probably find they are confined to localized niche’s. these small habitats could be isolated and sealed up from the rest of Mars, then terraform the place.

If complex life is found all over the planet, and it is evolving, then we should leave Mars alone to the Martians.

More simply put, if Mars life exist (unique from the Earth), but it is going no where evolutionary, and (left to its own) will not evolve before the Sun dies, then yes, humans should make Mars a home and terraform the place.

If there is Mars life (Unique from the Earth) and it is evolving, then leave Mars alone (Unless it is confined to a small area and the rest of the planet is sterile.)

How about this question: Suppose we find Mars life that is unique from the Earth, but it is not evolving. Should we give it an evolutionary boost and see where it evolves too? Terraforming could do just that.

Ah yes, the Cold War. We knew who our enemy was and they stayed on their side and we stayed on our side. We threaten each other as we flexed our muscles but we never punched each other.

It was nice to know who your enemies were and where they lived. I never thought I would prefer that over these thugs who throw sucker punches and hide in various counties including our own. I do remember being a kid in the early 1980’s and wondering when the Soviets would annihilate my city with a nuke. That probably had more to do with watching all those post nuclear war movies like mad max (The nuke scene in Terminator II, where LA was nuked, looked terrifying on the big screen.)

#272 Re: Human missions » Human Base on Venus - An Engineering Challenge » 2004-08-16 06:01:56

Why Venus? Venus has the potential to become another Earth. Mars can come close, but only Venus could come even closer to being Earth’s twin.

Look at the Terraforming threads on ideas for terraforming Venus. We have thought of some good ones. I suspect our ideas are as close to the real thing as Leonardo da Vinci's flying machine is to a modern day jet. But like his work, or ideas are the foundation for future terraformist. Each generation builds upon the previous so that was once impossible become possible.

It wasn’t so long ago people laughed at the idea of man going to the Moon.

As for the Iraqis fighting for their freedom. They were in no position to fight for their freedom. They had a KGB type government watching then (and killing them). They had no weapons and were poorly fed.

The people who fought and died for American’s freedom 228 years ago were well fed and armed. Their opposing government was across the Atlantic. If you are an American, don’t ever forget someone died for your freedom. We take it for granted as we enjoy the freedom others died for.

And I will get off my soap box.

Our pre-9/11 innocence was an illusion (no argument there). Life was good for most Americans in the 1990’s so we stuck our heads in the sand on a lot of things. For me, I was just out of College when 1991 started. I got married shortly there after and started teaching. I spent most of the 90’s trying to get my own life in order, and I didn’t pay much attention to the outside world.

The best hope, IMO, for a terrorist free future is to get the Middle East to join the Free World. This is why Iraq and Afghanistan are so critical. If they can be made successful free democracies, others will follow. Saudi Arabia is practically a free country, as is Kuwait. In Iran, the younger generation wants to be free and is just waiting to rise up. Pakistan is cooperating with America (a little arm twisting involved.) Libya is cooperating and becoming peaceful.

Eventually the Middle East will join the free world. The seeds of freedom have been planted. Many have tasted the sweetness of freedom. I don’t think there is any going back. But the question is, how long will it take and how much will be sacrificed? Can we weather it? I hope so, because our future is at stake.
