#2 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » Extrasolar Planetary Systems - Could we detect the small planets? » 2003-11-05 13:33:58

Here is another really fresh one, almost working...  smile
We will have to wait 2 more years for it to be fully operational but I think this is the one with the potential of the earliest results in regards of extra Solar system planets (10 times better than the Hubble ST).

There are multiple technologies and missions currently under planning and development to detect Earth like planets around nearby stars. Here are some examples:

NGST (Next Generation Space telescope)

Kepler Space Telescope

SIM (Space Interferometry Mission)

TPF (Terrestrial Planet Finder)

and many more...
Here is a much bigger list (not all links are working within though):

Don't forget to pay attention to Gravity Probe B, which will be launched in Dec 2003 by NASA. It has been built for decades and just to read about the engineering wonders they had to do to make it possible is very very interesting.
More details about the probe is at http://einstein.stanford.edu/

It will experimentally check for gravitic waves, etc.  cool

I don't know if you guys know about this company. There are some pretty interesting details on their site regarding the space elevator:
