Update: Initial attempts to set up a Linux system on Azure were unsuccessful. A plain Linux Ubuntu system was created, but it refused to install software such as MySQL, PHP and Apache2. Two attempts to set up a LAMP system also failed for different reasons.
However, in the course of the Microsoft effort, we learned that Google and Amazon are offering comparable packages.

The purpose of the account is to provide a place for upgrade of the FluxBB software currently running the forum, thanks to the generous support of the Mars Society. Today's email was related to the Azure initiative.
Update: Initial attempts to set up a Linux system on Azure were unsuccessful. A plain Linux Ubuntu system was created, but it refused to install software such as MySQL, PHP and Apache2. Two attempts to set up a LAMP system also failed for different reasons.
However, in the course of the Microsoft effort, we learned that Google and Amazon are offering comparable packages.
Dropbox is offering to increase free disk storage to 16 Gb in return for enlisting friends to use Dropbox.
That is a hefty increase from current 2 Gb. If a NewMars member decides to open a DropBox account please let us know so we can apply for the offer of increased storage.
Google announced that they have extended their policy on inactive accounts. Now they will wait two years before deleting an account.

Update: With the assistance of ChatGPT4, the installation of a working LAMP system into an empty Linux Ubuntu Virtual Machine is complete. The package is working, with active links to the Apache test page, and the PHP information display.
