Re: Housekeeping

that last post is in 1-24-2004 but yes I will see where I am at for my post clearing.
The work has been paying off for those reading some of the older topics.
We will need to focus efforts on the recruiting of past members by contacting them with there old emails in hopes of getting some to return.
In that out reach we need to talk about the projects and the respective goals that when we look at the data discussions we have show that we are closer to making mars a reality than what we had in the past.

edit
found that I am in posts for the month of December 2004.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #2004

Congratulations on your progress!  WBA is just starting 2004, and will nibble away at 300 posts per day.

You should (hopefully) be well into 2005 when the Trail Blazer gets to where you are now.

The Re-scan is more than 2/3's through the current run ... it'll finish somewhere around 11 PM local time.

***
I like your suggestion we start thinking about how we might reach out to past members.

WBA can do that, if you decide you want to pursue the idea.  You can make a list of ID's you want to ping. That list can be turned over to WBA and it can send emails to the ID's in the list, using the email address on file.

We can arrange for the return address to be the NewMarsMember email account.

I'm not expecting much of a response, but there might be a few folks interested in diving back into the fray.

In the past (as nearly as I can tell) there were no projects, although several people did make proposals.  Nothing ever came of any of those ideas, as far as I can tell.  We are in a new age.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ... this post is a special request...

Question: can a ring be lifted on a pole using magnetic force?

This has surely been addressed in the hundreds of years since discovery of electric current and magnetism induced by electric current.

I'm thinking about the traditional (to me ridiculous) idea of physically "climbing" up a space elevator.

Multiple years of college students have tested their organizational and engineering skills trying to physically grip a rope (or ribbon)  suspended from a tower.

The question I have is: Is there a combination of components that would demonstrate elevation of a ring set around a post of some kind?

Update at 12:31 ...

The Trail Breaker just ended, so I'm here to update the post for that.

However, I thought I'd add a suggestion that you drop all references to using people to assemble Large Ship. No funder is going to provide the means to do that since robots (under human control) can do the job.  Therefore, please consider changing your write-ups to show teleoperation as the normal procedure.  Humans may well be needed to solve problems that the teleoperations teams cannot solve, but such occurrences will be few and far between, and whatever such incidents ** do ** occur will immediately be followed by upgrades to teleoperations capabilities.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut .... recently you wrote a post about a magnetic shield for Large Ship.

In that post you offered the hypothesis that a stainless steel metal sheet (such as hull of Large Ship) would block magnetic force trying to enter the space behind the sheet.

I offered a suggestion that you create a science experiment for a middle school student, so they could test your hypothesis.

If you are working on that experiment, here's an update:

I have powerful refrigerator magnets ordered online, since the wimpy magnets available in the market are useless.

The powerful magnets are able to attract each other, if placed face to face.

It is almost impossible to get them apart.

I found a stainless steel mixing bowl.

The magnets do NOT attract to the stainless steel mixing bowl.

However, when I placed the two magnets on opposite sides of the mixing bowl, they slammed together with great force.

The lesson that our hypothetical middle school student might learn is that a stainless steel plate may not attract a magnet, but it sure will transmit magnetic force straight through to the other side.

If you write up the experiment, the answer in the back of the book will be: Don't use stainless steel as a magnet shield.

Re: Housekeeping

You are correct and normally we make use of aluminum for that reason where we are layering for filtering those fields and to create reflection of them. Also magnets do not stick to that aluminum as well.
You just found a mass savings for the large ship by material substitution for use on inside construction of the sound wet walls.

I did find a few documents on ring levitation but the issue is the field strength from ring to ring as an acceleration to orbit but how to give power to make the field of a coil might be with beamed power and repulsion of fields the issue is ring slip for the vertical alignment as we make it taller such that a breeze would not topple it.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re post #2009

I logged in just now to report on the Re-scan, and found your reply about magnets.

Thanks for taking a first look at the lifting ring question.

your reply seemed to indicate you are expecting that if I repeat the experiment with a sheet of aluminum, the magnets might not "see" each other through the sheet.

That theory seems plausible to me, because I have seen a demonstration of magnetic levitation on an aluminum sheet. The device used rotating permanent magnets to generate counter force (I've forgotten the correct term) in the aluminum sheet.

I'll have to look for a sheet of pure aluminum ... aluminum foil might be on hand ...

That is not always aluminum but mixed some times same problem with things branded stainless as some are slightly magnetic as well.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #2011

Thanks for the reminder that foil may include atoms other than aluminum.

For the purposes of the radiation topic, and specifically the ability of magnetic fields to penetrate the habitat where humans are resident, I think (hope) it is safe to trust the label on the package.  I'll study it carefully before performing the magnet experiment.

The experiment is intended to discover if there is ** any ** material that will block extension of magnetic lines from a permanent magnet.  Based on the experience with stainless steel reported elsewhere, I am skeptical.

For SpaceNut .... I'm confident no one else will ever see this post, and I'm not even sure of you << grin >> Just FYI... GW Johnson is quietly working the problem of Large Ship propulsion and navigation.  Yesterday, he sent me an update reporting preliminary results that suggest there may be a solution to a particularly pesky problem.  It is too early to be sure, but I am guardedly hopeful a workable solution will fall into place.

While I recognize the time and attention you must devote to the forum in your position as Senior Administrator, I hope you can squeeze out a moment here and there to work on the radiation problem.  Quaoar just tossed you a hint of an approach that might work.  It will have to be adapted to the unique physical structure of Large Ship (Prime), which (of course) is NOT a toroid.  Still, it seems to offer a solution that ** might ** be able to deflect high energy ions, and that is what we need.

There is a temptation to dismiss the problem of radiation protection.  I am here to (try to) keep everyone focused upon solving their part of the puzzle.

Large Ship (Prime) is not a torus shaped structure ...

How would you adapt Quaoar's suggestion to the Large Ship design of RobertDyck?

Quaoar suggested 20 Tesla might be needed to implement a field to deflect iron nuclei.

What would be required to generate a 20 Tesla field around Large Ship?

What effect would such a field have on equipment and people?

It should be fun for us (NewMars forum members) to take a look at these issues, in the days ahead.

We have until March 12th to come up with something halfway reasonable for RobertDyck to offer to his audience.

For SpaceNut re Posts Repair initiative ...

Today's Trail Breaker will try for 27000 ... we will have only 50,000 posts to go after today's run!

Today's Re-scan will once again cover 800 posts, with catchup likely by March 13th, if all goes well.

I'd like to point out a small surprise .... yesterday's rescan found no defective posts.  I don't recall that happening before, but it means there were no potholes in that stretch, and no image inside url problems.

Total input Lines in script: 140

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re Scientific American pdf recommended by Quaoar.....

Until I receive a release from Scientific American to share the March 2006 issue of the magazine with a larger audience, I'll make it available to specific folks who are working directly on the radiation mitigation issue.

You are the first person I am thinking of ... RobertDyck is overseeing the effort from his large Ship topic, but Radiation is probably a subtopic that he'd be willing to delegate.

To the best of my knowledge you and Dropbox are not on the outs (as is the case with Google) so I can probably open viewing access for your email address.  Just let me know.  No need to publish your email address. I can see it in your profile.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re Posts Repair ... a Trail Breaker is underway.  27300 is the target for today.

The Re-Scan will try for 21300... Catch up is expected by March 13th.

RobertDyck is scheduled to address the North Houston NSS on March 12th.

GW Johnson will drive over to Houston to address the chapter in person on April 9th.

With any luck, kbd512 will be able to attend the live presentation on April 9th.

*** For SpaceNut re failure mode during Post Repair Trail Breaker session ... please take a look at the topic from 2004 that got clobbered during the repair run. I don't think WBA had anything to do with the failure, other than creating the conditions that caused FluxBB (or MySQL) to fail as it did.  WBA functions as an ordinary website customer, and cannot change the ID of the poster or the date of the post.

As noted, this is the first time this has occurred, and we now have nearly 50,000 updates under our belts.

Update at 11:35 local time ... The Trail Breaker just ended with a Green Screen. I'll check the log to see if it shows anything unusual at the time that FluxBB/MySQL failed.

Completed Sequence for ID: 27300

Total Command Lines found: 44
Total input Lines in script: 140

  Number of ID's processed: 300

Starting Number: 27001

Last Number of Run: 27300

3  Sequence for ID: 27075
4  Sequence for ID: 27078
5  Sequence for ID: 27215
6  Sequence for ID: 27257

All six skips had the img url problem.  Now I'll investigate the failure reported earlier, for four posts

For SpaceNut re explosion of post 27043 ....

The failure clearly occurred as WBA was attempting to deliver the updated post to FluxBB.

Here is the restored post:

Re: Housekeeping

The data base only showed the first 256 posts when I checked it earlier as I saw you post was fresh and wondered about it. Then when I clicked on the page 2 tab it finally showed when I went back in that it had more posts attached to it.
In the old software the page post counter was on 25 and would only allow 300 posts with in the topic before it would crash way back then.
I also noted that spiderman had an image in his profile that would also interfere with post shifting that I will fix. We have seen this even recently with a few other posts but it seems to be getting less often.

edit
we have the feature turned of as well as the avatar and saving of them within posts as well since we did not have the servers space for the extra content.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #2024

Thanks for details of your observation!

And! Thanks for taking care of Spiderman's image in his profile ... I did not realize a member could have an image in the profile, but in his case, it makes sense.

The re-scan is moving along smoothly to this point ... it should be done by (about) 9 PM local time, if all goes well.
