Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re Posts Repair initiative and local snow fall ...

It's just like in "Olden Times" when WBA used to process a set of posts and end with a Green Screen.

We reached 19,800 today, and the log file reports one skip.

Completed Sequence for ID: 19800

Total Command Lines found: 44
Total input Lines in script: 140

  Number of ID's processed: 300

Starting Number: 19501

Last Number of Run: 19800

Average time of Loop from Main form: 00:00:35
1 Skip Exceptions were recorded.

Total time of Processing: 02:57:35

And the skip report was for:

Query Text Requested Was Found: Routine Reset
Skipping to Next Item
Completed Sequence for ID: 19784

The problem with 19784 had to do with image vs url again.

I note that the member reported using Maya modeling language.

Update at 13:30 local time ... the re-scan/validation run from 3000 is under way

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut .... this is a special request item ...

I'd like to show a couple of slides about the Mars Society ahead of Dr Johnson's talk at the rehearsal tomorrow.

Do you have a couple of suggestions?

Links would work (I think) ....

There may well be lots of great images ... the MDRS itself is an activity of long standing that might have some images.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #1954

Thanks for that excellent image, and the links!  I'll follow up tomorrow!

Those should be fun to have on hand to put Dr. Johnson's talk in a Mars Society context!

***
I noticed your posts this evening to put content in other topics where it fits well.

***
Just FYI .... The Houston NSS chapter is discussing the possibility of inviting Dr. Johnson to drive over from McGregor to give his talk about propulsion and orbital mechanics.  I was hesitant to suggest that because it would be (or might be) an imposition on Dr. Johnson, but his first reply seemed to indicate he'd be willing to consider it.

I definitely like the idea, if it is practical, because he would have a chance to talk directly to chapter members.  I am hoping the chapter will be interested in his educational offerings, which are not receiving an audience within the NewMars setting.

One of their members is an educator ... fairly high up .... not sure of details ....

We have a "dress rehearsal" lined up for tomorrow using Zoom ... a member of the NSS chapter will be joining the Zoom session.

Follow up 2022/02/05 at 10:41 local time .... Thanks again for those two excellent suggestions for opening the Zoom session!

The images are impressive (to me for sure) and now I need to find some text to go with them.

They clearly show that the Mars Society has been quietly and steadily building up a cadre of expedition graduates.  I would expect future Mars explorers (for real) to include members of this cohort!

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re Posts Repair initiative...

A run to 20100 is in progress, and the new version of WBA has handled any hiccups there might have been so far.

The "dress rehearsal" for Dr. Johnson's talk (on Zoom) is firming up for 2 PM Houston time today.

I'll be collecting the images you suggested shortly.

We are well below freezing in this region of the US, but the Sun is shining brightly, which is good for morale.

We reached 20,100 with one skip:

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re 1957 ....

While I sympathize with the annoyance of having snow plow debris covering your driveway, I contrast your experience with the region where I live. As the years have passed, ambition to try to plow has shrunk, so that now neighborhood streets are NOT plowed, except where buses run.

A recent post described a set back with electric equipment (in the kitchen if I recall?) ... have you been able to recover from that?

replacement cords and appliances have been slowly replaced still need better weather to do more along with the time off to get to rewiring the kitchen for more capability.

Still in need of better weather outside in order to fix the 2005 ford escape charging system problem. I have a large charger to be able to fully charge the battery and can still run it for the weekly rubbish removal.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #1959 ... thanks for news of progress in the kitchen recovery ... I'm looking for warmer weather to add an outside outlet.  The one snow we had proved the mettle of the electric snow thrower. It dealt with eight inches of snow on a layer of ice handily, but the range was restricted due to distance of outlet.

Sounds like fair weather will allow the Escape a chance to return to normal charging-by-driving!

This post is reserved for reports on today's Post Repair runs.

kbd512 will be hosting today's evening Zoom.

Yesterday's "dress rehearsal" went very well!  GW Johnson got to meet the NSS rep, and the procedures for showing slides in Zoom were worked out.

This is a backup plan for April 9th.  GW and Mrs. Johnson are currently planning to drive to Houston for the meeting.  That's a long drive, but it is an opportunity for Mars Society and NSS to work together, and (I'm hoping) lay the groundwork for more adventures in future.

Update at 9:48 local time ...

SpaceNut, I'm confident no one except you would pay any attention to these Housekeeping messages.  They are ** surely ** profoundly boring to everyone but you, and even ** you ** are doing all you can to stay awake!

So! Here's a (tentative) vision of what may be possible if the NewMars venture (with RobertDyck followed by GW Johnson) with the North Houston NSS takes place as planned .... Houston itself is (of course) a major site of corporate investment and forward thinking people and organizations.  A member of the NSS chapter has a background in finance in the oil industry.  The chapter president just received word he's been accepted for a mission controller position at NASA. There are PhD level members, and veterans of NASA service at a management level.

We (Mars Society and National Space Society) have an opportunity to encourage a space oriented business.

I'm (tentatively) thinking of: North Houston Mars Transport Company.

This entity would fund one or more versions of Large Ship, the Space Tug of GW Johnson, the Refueling Station of GW Johnson, and whatever else is needed to build a transportation infrastructure for the 2030's and beyond.

A key component of such an ambitious plan is development of human resources.

It is ** that ** possibility that is most attractive, because by enlisting the work that GW Johnson has already done, I can imagine a virtual space education environment that can start high school or early college students firmly on their way toward lifetime careers in the space field.

I have seen correspondence indicating support for the idea of recommending the talk by RobertDyck for the next ISDC (International Space Development Conference), if it goes over well with the local chapter.  I'm rooting for RobertDyck to knock the ball out of the park!

I already know that GW Johnson has passed muster and then some.

The presentations will help to convey the thoughts of how we can go to mars now for sure but also where the commercial market needs to put forth the up front work to build in orbit. The North Houston NSS is just one of many places that we can toot the horn loudly to motivate those that have more clout.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re Zoom post ... thanks for taking the time to look at the Rehearsal Zoom! That has to be the shortest Zoom (for NewMars) on record. Most run for four hours or more!

I was surprised you mentioned the Lizard King, because I missed it.   The NSS rep must have used that as his ID on Zoom.

I've known the gent for 10 years+.  That is why we are connected to the North Houston chapter, and have a chance of building cooperative ventures, depending upon how interested other members of the chapter may be.

We have a ** lot ** of talent in NewMars, but the active group is small right now.

It will be fun to see how things develop.

For SpaceNut ... update re North Houston NSS chapter ...

The chapter learned (from Mr. Burk) of a new Mars Society chapter in Houston, and sent an email of introduction and invitation to attend the two upcoming Mars Society presentations.

This is definitely encouraging!

Update at 17:20 local time ...

Just finished word-for-word review of Dr. Johnson's proposed article for a print publication.  it was fun seeing that material again.  I found a few minor nitpicks and quibbles to provide entertainment.  The sooner the article goes into the intake pipe, the sooner the editorial staff can begin thinking about how to fit it into a future issue of the periodical.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re possible new topic ....

Let's think about this .... I'm not in a hurry, and may decide not to introduce a new topic at all...

This (proposed) new topic might fit best in the Mars Analog topic.  it is similar to Dr. Zubrin's ideas, but quite different.

The idea flows from the work of RobertDyck, which is stable enough at this point to serve as an anchor.

The floor plan of a Large Ship is fixed for a given ring ... it is a fixed number of meters long, a fixed number wide, and the total area is 4522 square meters.

There is a recent post with specifications in the Large ship topic.

** this ** post is about design and construction of an Earth Analog Large Ship.

What I'm thinking about is a building with three floors, as wide and as long as the Large Ship plan.

The bottom floor would contain equipment needed to support "passengers" residing on the second floor.

The second floor would contain cabins with exactly the same dimensions as the Large Ship plan calls for.

The top floor would be a green house with a glass roof.

The conditions of flight would be simulated as closely as possible, but if something fails the "passengers" would receive immediate relief, unlike in space, where no relief is possible.

What I'm particularly interested in is the dilemma of being a "passenger" in a structure like this with 1059 other people, in a space just a bit larger than an American football field, for six to eight months.

The sooner we (humans) can build and test this concept, the sooner we will know whether it is psychologically feasible with humans alive on Earth today.

Re: Housekeeping

The shape is not all that important as you can make use of as much or as little of the overall length as one would desire. You might decide that a cylinder at a given diameter inside of the shape is all you would want. Even the AG gravity level is up for trials.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #1968

Your post is interesting ... how does it tie back to the Large Ship?

The habitat ring is NOT a cylinder.  It is a rectangular solid bent into a very large circle.

The dimensions of the Habitat Rim of the ship (as of 2020/10/10) are 19 meters wide by 238 meters long.

If it is stretched out on the ground, it is a rectangular solid, 19 meters wide, 238 meters long and 3(*) meters tall.

How does the cylinder idea work in that situation?

It is possible I just missed the connection.

(*) The figure of 3 meters is an estimate for height. The actual value is posted in the Large ship topic.

Update the next day ....

The purpose of the exercise is to see if the vision of RobertDyck, to pack 1060 people into the volume given above for 8 months (let alone two years) is practical in the real world.  The vision started with a 1910 passenger vessel in the Atlantic Ocean trade.  At that time, it appears that people were willing to be transported in density that most humans would find unacceptable in 2022.

The test facility should be ** exactly ** the size and dimensions of the proposed Large Ship.

Everything that needs to be tested ** can ** be tested in an onshore(Earth based) facility.

Four parameters of the flight cannot be tested:
1) The gravity cannot be tested
2) the Coriolis effects of rotation cannot be tested
3) radiation cannot be simulated.
4) The Mars atmosphere cannot be tested

However, everything else that will impact the flight plan ** can ** be tested:
1) Air management (cleaning, CO2 removal, Oxygen replacement)
2) Energy management. While supplied from outside sources, every watt will be measured with precision
3) Food management. While supplied from outside sources, every gram will be measured with precision
4) Water management. While supplied from the outside if necessary, every gram will be measured with precision.
5) Waste management. Zero waste will be allowed to leave the facility
6) Human psychological health. To survive, everyone must be kept busy during every waking hour.

Participants would be able to bail out at any time.  It seems unlikely to me that the average person can survive this experience.

The US Navy (and all navies with submarines) are able to send crews to sea for upwards of 90 days at a time.  My understanding is that such crews are supplied with air, water, food, comfortable accommodations (though cramped) and a constant, never-ending demand for meaningful activity.

Facilities like this can be constructed and operated in many Nations. It may well turn out that people from cultures inured to hardship may do better.

I would expect Americans to do poorly.  The idea of spending six to eight months in a plot of terrain a bit larger than an American football field with 1059 other people will not agree with most Americans.

The closest I can think of are American prisons, but even there the density of population is (probably) less than is proposed for Large Ship.

****
Update at 9:44 local time ...

More for SpaceNut ...

I have a possible funder in mind .... this is a philanthropic organization with a distinct tone that combines caring for people with moral discipline.

it is ** not ** a religious organization ... I wouldn't want what I have in mind to be contaminated with overtones of religion.  What I'm aiming for is finding a way to prove that 1060 people can not only survive eight months in the tiny volume of Large Ship, but actually thrive.

In my mind's eye, a philanthropic organization sets up a facility as described above, and selects "classes" of 1060 people to attempt an eight month confinement.  The folks who survive this test are then automatically eligible to fly on the next available Large Ship.

Each class would disperse to continue with their lives (academia, military, commerce or other pursuits) and when the next Large Ship becomes available they would be given the opportunity to sign up for the "real thing".

An outcome of the series of tests will be recommendations to improve the physical structure.  An obvious improvement would be to add rings. The addition of a ring would increase the mass of Large Ship, so it would not be taken lightly, but on the other hand, if the original one-ring design cannot be tolerated by 1060 people for eight months, then the extra mass is worth whatever the cost might be.

An extra ring might be dedicated to physical fitness and other activities designed to insure the optimum physical and mental well being of the ship's complement.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re Posts Repair ... a run to 21300 is under way.

I caught a glimpse of conversation in 2003 .... there was a lot of discussion of human behavior at the time.

The events and leaders of the day often showed up in posts.  There were even occasional reference to ancient philosophers, and even more recent ones.

***
Just FYI re re-scan run of February 9th ... The difference between the trail breaking run and the re-scan/validation is 16500.  I'd like to drop that difference to 16000 to make it easier to set up the re-scan without having a spreadsheet.  To accomplish that, I'm planning a one-time re-scan of 800 on the 9th.

The re-scans seem to be going well, so a longer run should complete without incident.

I'm also thinking of keeping the re-scans going after the current target of 16,800.  The laptop doesn't seem to mind the extra work, and anything that is missed by the trail breaker is likely to be picked up by the re-scan.

It appears we are good to go through 5300

I'm thinking of running the re-scan for 1300 posts in order to catch up to the trail breaker.
It will take fifteen days, and the laptop will have to work overnight.
The current gap is 16,000 posts.

Starting 800 post run for re-scan.
800 posts will take 9 hours.
At that pace, the re-scan will catch up with the trail breaker in 32 days.

Re: Housekeeping

Thanks for the pothole count

The concept of an analog build of the big ship I think is something that is very do able and could be of aid if we try to make it a closed loop design to simulate space conditions with safety.

Have cleared another hundred of my bandit filled posts mostly from the late 2004

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #1973

I'm listening to Elon Musk giving his Starship update as I reply.

Thanks for noting the smooth trail breaker run today.

The re-scan had two skip incidents, and both were image inside url problems.

Both 5470 and 5572 have been repaired and re-posted.

I believe we have good posts through 6100.

I'm planning to attempt to re-scan 800 posts each day for the next 31 days, to catch up with the trail breaker.

Thanks too for noting the potential value of the Large Ship on-Earth Analog Test facility to help to prove capability of the numerous self-sustaining equipment and practices that RobertDyck is recommending.

Since this has never been done before, it makes sense to retire as much risk as possible.

However, the MAJOR benefit of this concept is the human selection and training process that would occur.

I think that RobertDyck's idea of putting 1060 people into the equivalent of 123 railroad passenger cars for six to eight months is wildly optimistic.  I suspect that there are few Americans who could hold up mentally and emotionally to the experience.  However, a test facility on a college campus would allow us to find out.  The students who take part would be enrolled in intensive courses of study that would demand up to 12 hours of the day.  The sessions would be conducted both virtually and inside the test facility, with appropriate accommodations.

I would expect everyone to participate in meal preparation, meal cleanup, equipment and facility maintenance, and care of the green house facility on the roof.  The military has established best practices for small unit self-care, so I am confident this model is practical.

Thanks again for your interest in the Large Ship on-Earth Test Facility.

I'll start another re-scan shortly. This one will cover 6101-6900

Update at 17:17 local time ... The Re-Scan is chugging along. ETA is 22:00 local time.

In the meantime, imgur.com just sent me a "busy" notice:

{"data":{"error":"Imgur is temporarily over capacity. Please try again later."},"success":false,"status":403}

I've never seen ** that ** before.  It ** is ** a Friday afternoon, and after 5 PM in the Eastern Time Zone.  Perhaps a zillion users are attempting to log in.
