Re: Housekeeping

tahanson43206,

We use fiber here.  The only thing that kills the internet these days are the power outages from thunderstorms.  It appears to be the best solution, not subject to cellular or satellite reception issues, nor copper wire related issues.

Re: Housekeeping

For kbd512 re #1501

Thanks for the feedback regarding fiber for Internet!

The local user group was able to secure fiber service because it uses (generously donated) space in a (very large) retail establishment, which ** has ** fiber service as a necessity for their national operations.

A member of the local group said he is expecting to switch to fiber in the near future, as AT&T is able to lay the cable.  Knowing the gent, i suspect the neighborhood is upscale.

I live on the border between upscale and whatever average is, and fiber is a mile away at present.

A new competitor "Starry.com" is offering over-the-air service that they are betting they can supply at half the price of comparable service from the hard-connection suppliers.  The company is (apparently) established in a couple of other major metropolitan areas.  I put in a bid for their service, but have the feeling I'm being ignored because I'm not an apartment complex, which is their target customer right now.

All that said, I think your assessment of fiber (reliability, not to mention speed) is a good match with everything I have heard or read.  Glad to hear you are able to enjoy that reliability, and whatever other benefits there may be.

Re: Housekeeping

Thats what the cable companies are offering at a stupid level of pricing since I am paying the same amount for a 3G connection ....they converted the copper about a decade ago to fiber...

Re: Housekeeping

SpaceNut,

The funny thing is that fiber ultimately costs them a lot less money, specifically because it's so reliable and has such minimal maintenance, in comparison to copper or cellular towers or satellites.

Edit:

I'm still waiting for near-space satellites, aka high altitude blimps of the kind that Lockheed-Martin developed, to supplant expensive communications satellites and cable-laying endeavors, which are both far more capital-intensive than operating drone airships that can remain aloft for years at a time.  The military should pay for the R&D, if only to provide pervasive communications capabilities using low cost persistent aerial platforms.  Satellites are great while they're overhead, but the problem has always been the insane cost of keeping one or several overhead at all times.  Maybe SpaceX can change that, but that remains to be seen.

Re: Housekeeping

SpaceNut and tahanson43206,

So, this time there were some duplicates with Russian E-mail addresses, for example, but those were not removed.

For example: TestID10886     hjhcxxpy@spacecas.ru

If I were to run the script again, then it would remove these bans with duplicate Test ID values, but I'll wait for instructions on that.

The script start / stop is shown below for TestID10701 to TestID10900:

Re: Housekeeping

For kbd512 re #1507

First, thanks for the update on last night's run, and for the report on finding duplicates.

You already know what I'll say next, but for the sake of a reader who might be viewing this topic for the first time, the version of FluxBB before the current one allowed duplicate entries to be made in the Bans table.  However, unique ID's are enforced in the Users table.

If a given Id (using TestID10886 in your example) is present in the users table as a member, then any entry for that ID in the Bans table can be deleted.

If the package you are using can do conditional logic, then you might be able to run a script to perform a lookup and make a decision.

***
The local Linux User Group took up my report of some web sites refusing "free" email addresses, during their recent meeting

Several suggestions were offered for persuading such sites that an email address is NOT a "free" one.

If anyone else has encountered this situation and would care to report details of problem and (solution if any), please consider posting here.

Re: Housekeeping

This mean I need to go into the ban table and not only change the name but the email as well so as to delink the cross link which was created with a double ban....
I will go take care of it and then I will remove that double from the table and it will be gone all together.

edit
Just finished the removal of the duplicates in the 81 pages in the banned table. A total of 41 usernames all total.

just began working to clear users after the letter t* to the end to bring in more spammer accounts to convert

All the letters u,v,w,x,y and z have become completed

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut and RobertDyck ...

GW Johnson wrote the Portal to offer one or more of the ExRocketman articles to be published by the Mars Society.

For RobertDyck ... There was some possibility that you might be able to gain access to some Mars Society storage via your connections at the chapter level.

We've not heard anything since, so I assume you must have run into difficulty.  Perhaps SpaceNut can help?

For SpaceNut ... GW Johnson's articles in ExRocketman might be of interest to the Mars Society ... do you have any contacts there who would be willing to take a look at them?

Hi James,

We have an opportunity to make use of Dr. G.W. Johnson's generosity with Orbital mechanics.

I'd like to invite you to start thinking about how we can turn this gift into a tutorial that will have lasting value.  Ideally we would have a permanent repository managed by Mars Society. In the absence of any indication that it is possible, can/should we look at other options. To begin with, we can make a topic dedicated as a tutorial, and connected to the primary Orbital Mechanics topic.

This is Dr. GW Johnson's website http://exrocketman.blogspot.com/

It has quite a bit of information that we might want to make available to the MarsPedia as well with his permission of course..

Of course the response was one of how much work was already on James plate as it was for the 2021 year.

Of course this was prompted several months before the offer by another member that has not returned which was looking at the food growing side of going to mars....

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #1516

I was surprised by my reaction to your accomplishment this evening .... I read that and thought "Good Grief" !!!  That is NOT a criticism!  It's just that the current set of Zero Post candidates stops just shy of the TestID collection that kbd512 is working on.

Thanks for working on that set of spammer created ID's.  The set in the current collection will go for 21 more days or so, but it is clear that there'll be more work ahead when the current batch is finished.

***
This is housekeeping, so I'll toss in a wildlife report ...

I live in a really old urban neighborhood.  The house itself is closing in on 100 years, but it is very junior to many houses in the area.

Wildlife of various kinds lives in the area, or comes to visit.  We've had all sorts of birds, including Cooper's Hawks.  We've had squirrels, opossums, raccoons and even rabbits from time to time.

A few days ago, I noticed a huge pile of soft dirt piled outside a shed under which opossums have lived in past years.  I thought that this must be another opossum but a ** really big ** one due to the volume of dirt moved.

My strategy is to sweep/rake the dirt back over the opening under the shed, and sprinkle clean sawdust on the pile so i can observe whether the visitor is coming or going.

This evening, as the sunlight ebbed and I prepared to lower the shade on the back door, I saw movement heading my way along the walk to the garage. To my astonishment, the movement continued, and continued some more and finally ended.

A mother skunk was leading her entire troop under the gate that leads to the front yard.  I hope they don't come back.

It is possible she didn't appreciate my careful piling of all her labor back over the entrance under the shed.

***
Other household topic item ... The news is reporting weather headed your way ... most reports are about about states that border the ocean, but I'm guessing you and your neighbors will see more rain than you need for a couple of days.

Re: Housekeeping

This post is reserved for updates for ID Recovery from 15,200 to 15,300

Verify runs will start shortly ....

Update at Noon local time ...

The collection of usernames with Zero Posts was made some time ago.

Today's Verify run find three usernames that are no longer in the User's Table.

Those names will be removed from the list of candidates.

The Verify Bans run will start shortly.

Update at 13:10 .... Well!  Once again, SpaceNut has given a few banned usernames a lease on life!

The scan of 107 usernames already verified as in the User's table yielded only 93 in the Bans table.

Those 93 will be turned over to WBA for this evening's run.

However, we are short 7 usernames to form a complete set of 100.

To remedy this, I'll run the verify scripts over again, using 110 as the limit.

Starting Verify in Users Table now:

Update at 20:15 .... The Internet took WBA down several times, but the rerun for 110 candidates just ended.

I'll run the Bans check now.
