What Our Cities Are Missing

I watched that entire video, and appreciate the perspectives on offer.  I also appreciated the criticism leveled against the author of the book quoted, although at the same time I can relate to the nostalgia described.

It seems to me there is an aspect of "third places" not considered in the video, or apparently even in the book...

There are many temporary "third places", and in fact, I would count the upcoming Mars Society Convention as an example.  Folks are going to be gathering for four days in Colorado, and anyone is welcome, but by and large, those who attend will share a set of beliefs and values that allow trust to flourish, and communication to occur at a high level.

Even a football game (or any sport) is an example of a temporary "third place".

However, it seems to me that the criticism of the Internet is (while often justified) missing the point ...

The NewMars forum is a place that (in my view) most certainly qualifies as a "third place" (separate from home and work).

The creator of the video makes valid observations about the misbehavior of humans using the Internet, and we have examples of that in the Forum Archive.

Never-the-less, the addition of Zoom to the range of capabilities of NewMars seems to me to show signs there may be a transition under way.

All-in-all, I consider that half hour to have been well spent!
