Re: NAFTA nation for lack of a better name

Better trade agreements are only impossible when you elect people who are too ignorant and/or too lazy to even try to negotiate better deals for your people.  With a functional government lead by people who actually care about their own people, it's possible to get a lot of useful things done.  All trade deals are compromises, but to the extent possible those deals should benefit all parties involved in as equitable a manner as circumstances will allow.

Re: NAFTA nation for lack of a better name

The problem I see with expanding to a greater government is that we have no "greater" government at all.   The Feds refuse to follow the Constitution, just absolutely refuse.   Canada actually has a judicial *policy* of not following the Constitution except in spirit and Mexico's Constitution used to be a good one, but got substantially worse with each iteration.    Not one has government that is trustworthy and even if we dissolved all three in favor of a new Constitution, I shudder to think of how atrocious it would be.   The EU is already showing wear and tear, they're in our 1800s, heading for civil war or divorce.

Re: NAFTA nation for lack of a better name

Trade agreements do not fix wage disperity of those that are part of it and that is just one reason Trump wanted to bully them into a new agreement via the use of tarrifs.
They do not fix the reason for why one border versus the other have people coming for work over the other.
Still trying to find an apples to apples comparison on what we had versus what we are getting if ratified.

Re: NAFTA nation for lack of a better name

SpaceNut,

President Trump is not responsible for the wages that other countries pay to their workers.  The wages in China should be much higher than they are, for example, but the Chinese government plays a variety of "games" with their economy to prevent wages from rising.  Should we keep playing the same game while it hurts everyone involved, or change the rules a bit to provide better outcomes for everyone?

Re: NAFTA nation for lack of a better name

This new deal was announced Trump Hails Revised Nafta Trade Deal, and Sets Up a Showdown With China

A significant portion of the vehicles would also have to be assembled by workers earning at least $16 an hour — a wage floor intended to increase jobs in the United States and Canada, where wages are higher than in Mexico.

So we are telling a nation in the agreement that they need to pay higher wages for these goods...and will mean higher prices to the american made goods from these parts. So we will not have jobs coming to america but they will be going elsewhere still but the reality of the deal is Trump’s new NAFTA is pretty much the same as the old one — but at what cost?

The replacement of North American Free Trade Agreement with United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) is being seen for what it is....

This new agreement does, it is true, include some important changes to the rules about manufacturing cars and trucks, though it isn’t yet clear exactly who will benefit. It’s also made some technical alterations to the dairy market and to the rules governing disputes. Canada and Mexico will have some extra protection against U.S. car tariffs; on the other hand, Mexico will be required to make it easier for workers to organize trade unions.

All three sides gained some things. All three sides conceded some things. The upshot: North American free trade will continue, more or less, as it has done for many years, regulated by the agreement formerly known as NAFTA. The only truly radical difference is that Trump’s negative, angry language has been replaced by happy, enthusiastic language.

He sure is with this deal....

Re: NAFTA nation for lack of a better name

Just keep in mind that politicians have alway said automation, immigration and productivity increases will eliminate jobs.

It's never happened.
