Re: horror of another school shooting

Pretty sure firearms existed and were widespread in America 50 years ago... it wasn't their absence that prevented school shootings.

Re: horror of another school shooting

For Terraformer re #26

Good point... your post reminded me of recent panel discussion of changes in the American psyche ...

There was a time when all levels of American society were revolted by the excesses of powerful weapons used by gangs, and constraints were imposed.

Google found this snippet:

Because it could be obtained so easily, the Thompson became notorious during the Prohibition era as the signature weapon of various organized crime syndicates in the United States in the 1920s. It was a common sight in the media at the time, and was used by both law enforcement officers and criminals.

About Featured Snippets

We (Americans) have blown past the self-constraints, so that the powers of the Thompson seem puny in comparison to permitted weapons of today.

The capability to experience revulsion seems to have waned.

I wonder if a population can experience "mental" illness.  Certainly individual humans can.  What is a "healthy" mental state of a population?

There are regions in South American and elsewhere in the world where what might be considered "norms" of human behavior have shifted over time.

It occurs to me that the same might well be considered for some populations within the United States.

The current war in Europe may well have arisen from a pervasive paranoia in a population.

In another topic, recently brought back into view by Mars_B4_Moon, the theme is the presence of weapons on Mars.

It seems to me that the example Mars_B4_Moon, of the absence of weapons in the stations in Antarctica is instructive.

According to the post by Mars_B4_Moon, there is only one weapon in the entire continent, and that is kept in a safe.

The level of fear of others is likely to be low in the population of Antarctica.

On the other hand, in the Arctic, bears are present and they are a significant danger, so weapons make perfect sense.

Re: horror of another school shooting

Seems the federal checks have failed, mental checks are hidden behind HIPA, and with so many on the streets that are not in any data base no wonder its getting easier to gather as many as you want to have to do what you please with them.

The Florida Department of Children and Families investigated him in September 2016 for Snapchat posts in which he cut both his arms and said he planned to buy a gun. The brother of a 2016 graduate described him as "super stressed out all the time and talked about guns a lot and tried to hide his face." A student who was enrolled at the school at the time of the shooting said, "I think everyone had in their minds if anybody was going to do it, it was going to be him." A classmate who was assigned to work with him in sophomore year said, "He told me how he got kicked out of two private schools. He was held back twice. He had aspirations to join the military. He enjoyed hunting." A student's mother said that he also bragged about killing animals. A neighbor said his mother would call the police over to the house to try to talk some sense into him

In 2021, the families of the victims of the shooting were awarded a $25 million settlement from Broward County School District, after a civil lawsuit was filed by the families of the 52 victims alleging the school district's negligence was to blame. In year 2018, prosecutors released three videos that they claimed Cruz had recorded on his cellphone before the shooting.
