I find this thread rather odd when the company that is going to get us to Mars is talking in terms of 500 tonnes of cargo on the first mission and a return from the Mars surface to Earth!

Well if bragging was enough sure but even Nasa's SLS which will actually be able to do something once in orbit and can loft 130T so lets focus on near term. It will have an earth departure stage to make it happen but even they are not ready for the mars prime time.

I am, beginning to wonder if a single starship could do the impossible if a second contained a return ship inside of it fueled up ready to go such as a dragon capsule plus launch stage. leave the fuel as water and react it over the time you are on the planet using a kilowatt reactor.
