Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Mars: 0036/09/12  Thursday <<-- Days of the week are ** IN ** alignment with Earth. The next skip day is in November on Earth.

Today on Earth: 2021/10/07 Thursday (Earth Date) Post Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred August 3, 2020 Earth Calendar]

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

Martian Year: 36  Martian Month in 12 month format: 4 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 120 degrees

Solar Longitude: 109.1  Sol Number: 235  Change in degrees is +.4
Previous SL:      108.7  Previous Sol:234

Note that Solar Longitude measurement varies as a function of location in orbit.

Note#2: https://theskylive.com/mars-tracker  This web site shows the astronomical position of Mars.
Minus prefix means Mars is approaching the Sun.  Perihelion occurred at Ls 253 on Sol 485 - Earth Date 2020/08/03
Plus prefix means Mars is moving away from the Sun. Aphelion occurred on Sol 152 at 71 degrees Ls.
Aphelion occurred near 70 degrees Ls on Sol 153 (per www.planetary.org)

Note#3: The computations below are dependent upon both the computations provided by the reference web site and by accuracy of recording of the time of observations.  The calculations use tenths of hours.  The Sun Distance needs to be captured at the moment the time increments to a given tenth.

Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   243,822,004 km [22.5 km/s] Difference is -118006 <= 5022 km/hour at 8.0 on 10/07 (time:8:00)
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   243,940,010 km [22.5 km/s] Difference is -121758 <= 4970 km/hour at 8.5 on 10/06 (time:8:30)
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   244,061,768 km [22.5 km/s] Difference is -120444 <= 4916 km/hour at 8.0 on 10/05 (time:8:00)

Next up: Galaxy PGC 1046170 RA 12h 55m 24.1s below path Day 0 about 16 hours ahead
Mini-Boomer HIP 62898 Magnitude 9.32 in path Day 0 about 18 hours ahead - Day 1 square on 5 hours marker

As a general observation ... In recent days I've become increasingly interested in knowing what the larger view of the sky might be like.
The site: theskylive.com does a terrific job of matching the view from Earth towards Mars, against a background of actual astronomical plates.
I wish there were a way (or rather, I wish I ** knew ** about a way that may exist) to enlarge the view until the entire galaxy is in view.
Update 2021/07/30 I wrote to an astronomer to ask if there might be a web site with a view showing the galaxy in context of a given view.

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line trending noticeably down and East as seen from Earth
In recent days, the curve has been slowly bending down through horizontal.

Earth Distance 2021/10/06 393,313,405 (decrease)
Earth Distance 2021/10/06 393,464,715 (decrease)
Earth Distance 2021/10/05 393,611,662 (decrease)

Mars and Earth are approaching opposition.  The two planets will soon be on opposite sides of the Sun. Earth Distance reached maximum.

Light travel in one second is (about) 300,000 kilometers. The distance covered in one minute is about 18,000,000 kilometers.
Light travel time today is between 21 and 22 minutes. Communications delay would be 42+ minutes round trip. [21:390,000,000] [22:420,000,000]

In his online interview with Dr. Zubrin at the 2020 Mars Conference, Elon Musk reminded the audience that communications with Mars will necessarily include an intermediary station to handle traffic when the Sun is between Mars and Earth.  Communications delays in that circumstance will increase due to the extra distance to be covered.  Mr. Musk indicated he expects such communication will be handled by laser.  Location would be optimum at poles of solar plane.

Mars is executing the "Retrograde" movement as seen from Earth. Earth is passing "under" Mars.
Progress of Mars (as seen from Earth) is transitioning back to Eastward as the retrograde movement continues.
The online solar system display at the link below shows clearly how the Mars retrograde movement will occur in months ahead.
Retrograde movement started 2020/09/08 Sol 520

This web site offers an online model of the solar system: www.solarsystemscope.com  It requires Chrome 57, Firefox 52 or Safari 10.1

Sol 235 is in Month 09 of a Proposed 24 month calendar. See Post 19 of Holidays topic for a summary.
Month 09 extends from Sol 224 through 251. See post 82 of Holidays topic for current details. <<== There are 28 days in Month 09
Direct path to source: http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php … 57#p154257
Sol 235 is Thursday  in the Proposed Business calendar for Mars.

The Next New Year's on Mars will occur when Solar Longitude reaches 360 degrees. <<== The current year on Mars is 36
Per www.planetary.org this occurred February 7, 2021 (on Earth). The new Mars Year is 36.

The next Skip Day will occur in November 8th on Earth. A Skip Day occurs when the longer Mars Sol accumulates 24 Earth hours.
For those who may be following this proposed calendar closely, there exists a "feature" I had not anticipated.
Days of the week fall behind Earth due to the longer Sol, but they gain when Friday is omitted at the end of a Quarter
337 Earth days were observed to elapse in the 2020 weekday cycle. There were 7 week day transitions and 2 Quarter ends.

Also notable in October (on Earth) will be the conjunction of the Sun with Mars. That event ** should ** be visible in the daily theskylive.com display.
The date I am watching for is October 7th, 2021.

Update on October 7th: the Sun is NOT visible in the display by theskylive.com/mars-tracker
The display for the Sun shows the object at RA 12h 52m 08.9s and Declination -5 degrees 35 minutes 09.4 seconds
The display for Mars shows the object at      RA 12h 53m 57.9s and Declination -5 degrees 03 minutes 48.3 seconds
The Sun may pass below Mars and not in the view of Mars

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Update of Conjunction of Mars/Earth/Sun October 7, 2021

As of 20:30 Eastern Standard Time, the situation remains pretty much as reported earlier.

The views of the sky provided by theskylive.com share a star: HIP 63054

In the Mars view, HIP 63054 is directly beneath Mars, and just above the bottom of the view.

In the Sun view, HIP 63054 is holding position in the upper left corner of the view.

The Sun itself is expected to be directly under HIP 63054 in (about) 7 hours.

Meanwhile, the Earth is moving from left to right with respect to the Sun.

The Sun is moving, but I suspect the rate of movement of the Sun is a minor factor in the dynamics of the situation.

It seems to me, as I study the views, that the Sun and Mars are unlikely to appear in the same view.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Update of Mars/Sun Conjunction:

243,705,275 km [22.5 km/s]
Friday October 8 at 7:01

Mars/Sun Conjunction:

[less data]
Mars live position and data.
Right Ascension: 12h 56m 14.2s Declination: -5° 18' 28.5" (J2000)
Magnitude: 1.56 (Estimated: JPL)  Constellation: Virgo
Sun Distance: 243,705,131 km [22.5 km/s] Earth Distance: 393,159,916 km [52.3 km/s]

Sun live position and data.
Right Ascension: 12h 55m 35.4s Declination: -5° 56' 39.3" (J2000)
Magnitude: -26.74 (Estimated: JPL)  Constellation: Virgo
Sun Distance: 0 km [0.0 km/s] Earth Distance: 149,470,614 km [29.8 km/s]

PGC 158301 is visible in both views
PGC 1042427 is visible in both views

It now seems likely (to me at this point) that Mars and the Sun will NOT appear in the same view from our vantage point on Earth.

I deduce that the three bodies are very slightly NOT all in the same Solar Plane.

In contrast, Mercury was visible when it passed Mars a few (Earth) months ago (documented in this topic).

I deduce from that that Mercury's orbit is close to the Solar Plane, even though it is quite eccentric in maximum and minimum excursion.

Ecliptic - Wikipedia
en.wikipedia.org › wiki › Ecliptic
The ecliptic is the plane of Earth's orbit around the Sun. From the perspective of an observer on Earth, the Sun's movement around the celestial sphere over ... Sun's apparent motion · Plane of the Solar System · Celestial reference plane

By direct observation (of images provided by theskylive.com) it is clear that the orbit of Mars does not coincide perfectly with the ecliptic.

The bodies are within seconds of each other in Right Ascension, but growing apart in Declination.

Galaxy at bottom of Mars view: 1042502 Declination -5 36 53

Galaxy at top of Sun view: 117433 Declination -5 45 3

The gap between 36 and 45 is preventing sharing of overlap of the views.

The spread in declination is increasing, although Right Ascension is closing

Update ...

Mars/Sun Conjunction Report at 15:12 Eastern Standard Time

The views of the two bodies are overlapping by a slim amount of Declination.

Galaxy 117433 is visible in both views ...

Mars live position and data.
Right Ascension: 12h 57m 04.1s Declination: -5° 23' 49.3" (J2000)
Magnitude: 1.57 (Estimated: JPL)  Constellation: Virgo
Sun Distance: 243,663,278 km [22.5 km/s] Earth Distance: 393,102,095 km [52.3 km/s]

Galaxy 117433

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Mars/Sun Conjunction report October 8 2021 on Earth
Time: 19:04 Eastern Standard Time

The two views provided by theskylive.com are overlapping

Mars live position and data.
Right Ascension: 12h 57m 27.5s Declination: -5° 26' 19.9" (J2000)
Magnitude: 1.57 (Estimated: JPL)  Constellation: Virgo
Sun Distance: 243,643,570 km [22.5 km/s] Earth Distance: 393,074,559 km [52.3 km/s]

Three galaxies are shown in both views: PGC 1040757, PGC 1040704 and PGC 117433

Sun live position and data.
Right Ascension: 12h 57m 25.8s Declination: -6° 08' 08.2" (J2000)
Magnitude: -26.74 (Estimated: JPL)  Constellation: Virgo
Sun Distance: 0 km [0.0 km/s] Earth Distance: 149,448,809 km [29.8 km/s]

The two bodies are within 2 minutes of each other

Declination remains significant: 34 + 8 or 42 minutes

Galaxy PGC 1040704 is lined up vertically with both bodies.

Update at 22:39 local time .... The Conjunction is definitely over ... There is one lonely galaxy still shared between the Mars view and the Sun view.

Meanwhile, the Sun has forged ahead of Mars (from the perspective of Earth) so the moment of Conjunction is past.

The two bodies never did get close enough in Declination to appear in the same view, but I am delighted that the overlapping views confirmed the conjunction was happening as predicted.

Sol 237 is in Month 09 of a Proposed 24 month calendar. See Post 19 of Holidays topic for a summary.
Month 09 extends from Sol 224 through 251. See post 82 of Holidays topic for current details. <<== There are 28 days in Month 09

Sol 237 is Saturday  in the Proposed Business calendar for Mars.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Mars: 0036/09/15  Sunday <<-- Days of the week are ** IN ** alignment with Earth. The next skip day is in November on Earth.

Today on Earth: 2021/10/10 Sunday (Earth Date) Post Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred August 3, 2020 Earth Calendar]

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

Martian Year: 36  Martian Month in 12 month format: 4 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 120 degrees

Solar Longitude: 110.5  Sol Number: 238  Change in degrees is +.5
Previous SL:      100.0  Previous Sol:237

Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   243,442,743 km [22.5 km/s] Difference is -129444 <= 5178 km/hour at 10.0 on 10/10 (time:10:00)
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   243,572,187 km [22.5 km/s] Difference is -133088 <= 5119 km/hour at 9.0 on 10/09 (time:9:00)
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   243,705,275 km [22.5 km/s] Difference is -116729 <= 5075 km/hour at 7.0 on 10/08 (time:7:01)

Next up: Star TYC 4963-39-1 Magnitude 9.75 below path Day 0 about 15 hours ahead
Star TYC 4956-984-1 Magnitude 10.10 below path Day 0 about 8 hours ahead -Day 1 aout 18 hours behind

Earth Distance 2021/10/10 392,756,388 (decrease)

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

For kbd512 re #1210

The answer is no, but all the posts are available to download and scan to pull data that might be useful for a spreadsheet.

Take a look at Post #82 of the Holidays topic .... There are some tables there that might be swept into a spreadsheet.

My purpose has been to see if the calendar concept designed (with significant advice from RobertDyck) might actually work, and I've been gratified to find  that for business purposes, it is as good as I was hoping.

The years are identical from one to the next, because of the End-of-Year re-alignment with the astronomical calendar.

Another benefit I've found is that the days of the week are ** always ** the same number in the Month, and the same number in the week.

Thanks again for your inquiry.

There is a galaxy in today's view that is remarkably large and well defined, as seen from Earth: NGC 4981 RA 13h 08m 7s Magnitude 12.20 Broadside view

Earth Distance 2021/10/11 392,191,808 (decrease)
Earth Distance 2021/10/11 392,393,603 (decrease)
Earth Distance 2021/10/11 392,605,077 (decrease)

Mars and Earth are moving apart after Conjunction.  The two planets are on opposite sides of the Sun.

Sol 241 is Wednesday  in the Proposed Business calendar for Mars.

Earth Distance 2021/10/16 391,505,466 (decrease)
Earth Distance 2021/10/15 391,745,682 (decrease)

Mars and Earth are moving apart after Conjunction.  The two planets are on opposite sides of the Sun.

Sol 245 is Sunday  in the Proposed Business calendar for Mars.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Mars: 0036/09/23  Monday <<-- Days of the week are ** IN ** alignment with Earth. The next skip day is in November on Earth.

Today on Earth: 2021/10/18 Monday (Earth Date) Post Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred August 3, 2020 Earth Calendar]

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

Martian Year: 36  Martian Month in 12 month format: 4 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 120 degrees

Solar Longitude: 114.2  Sol Number: 246  Change in degrees is +.5
Previous SL:      113.7  Previous Sol:245

Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   242,420,135 km [22.6 km/s] Difference is -111897 <= 5567 km/hour at 7.5 on 10/18 (time:7:30)
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   242,532,032 km [22.6 km/s] Difference is -148500 <= 5520 km/hour at 11.4 on 10/17 (time:11:24)
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   242,680,532 km [22.6 km/s] Difference is -139482 <= 5470 km/hour at 8.5 on 10/16 (time:8:30)

Note a mini-Boomer in the view ... low center below Mars: HIP 65142 Magnitude 9.18
Next up: Star TYC 5544-198-1 Magnitude 10.53 just above path Day 0 about 20 hours ahead
Star TYC 5544-633-1 Magnitude 10.95 below path Day 0 about 18 hours ahead - Day 1 about 3 hours behind

Earth Distance 2021/10/18 391,016,362 (decrease)
Earth Distance 2021/10/17 391,227,741 (decrease)

Sol 249 is Thursday  in the Proposed Business calendar for Mars.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Mars: 0036/09/27  Friday <<-- Days of the week are ** IN ** alignment with Earth. The next skip day is in November on Earth.

Today on Earth: 2021/10/22 Friday (Earth Date) Post Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred August 3, 2020 Earth Calendar]

One Day Note: This is the last Friday of Month 9

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

Martian Year: 36  Martian Month in 12 month format: 4 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 120 degrees

Solar Longitude: 116.0  Sol Number: 250  Change in degrees is +.5
Previous SL:      115.5  Previous Sol:249

Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   241,877,429 km [22.7 km/s] Difference is -120917 <= 5758 km/hour at 7.0 on 10/22 (time:7:00)
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   241,998,346 km [22.7 km/s] Difference is -148448 <= 5710 km/hour at 10. on 10/21 (time:10:00)
Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   242,146,794 km [22.7 km/s] Difference is -135842 <= 5660 km/hour at 8.0 on 10/20 (time:8:00)

Next up: HIP 65957 Magnitude 8.24 below path Day 0 about 8 hours ahead
Galaxy PGC 998842 RA 13h 29m 59.6s in path Day 0 about 15 hours ahead - Day 1 about 8 hours past
HIP 65807 Magnitude 9.05 Day 0 about 8 hours ahead - Day 1 about 14 hours past

Earth Distance 2021/10/22 389,914,765 (decrease)
Earth Distance 2021/10/21 390,177,532 (decrease)
Earth Distance 2021/10/20 390,480,073 (decrease)

Mars and Earth are moving apart after Conjunction.  The two planets were on opposite sides of the Sun. Earth Distance maximum October 2021.
