Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

For SpaceNut re #925

Thank you for noting the confirmation of the practicality of the Business Calendar for Mars, invented and confirmed by the NewMars forum of the Mars Society. There is no need to wait until there are people on Mars to publish the calendar.

There is an audience of millions (our of a population of billions) who would be interested in spending (on the order of) $10 (US) for a well made Mars Calendar with glossy images from (or about) the Red planet!

The Mars Society could (and in my opinion ** should **) hold the copyright for this pattern.

Thinking about going to Mars is underway right now, ON ** Earth **!

The people who are going to Mars are alive on Earth today.  Most are in the early stages of education.

When they go, the research will have been carried out by the current generation of scientists and engineers, with the support of politicians who are of the previous generation (for the most part).

A well conceived physical Mars Calendar can be (and in my opinion ** should ** be) a source of helpful income to the Mars Society.

There will be the chance for a north and south of the equator for seasonal differences calendar.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

For SpaceNut re #927

Picking up on your point about the Astronomical calendar ... With modern/current technology, it would be perfectly feasible to generate calendars that include both the Astronomical timeline along with the Business timeline that will be essential for planning activities such as contracts on Mars.

On Earth, producers of Astronomical calendars for the public add a variety of Astronomical predictions to the cells for each day of the year.  The same could certainly be done for a Mars Calender.

Today on Mars: 0036/01/01 Sunday <<-- Days of the week are out of alignment with those on Earth.

Today on Earth: 2021/02/08 Monday (Earth Date) Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred August 3, 2020 Earth Calendar]

One day note:    Today is New Year's Day on Mars.  SearchTerm:NewYearsDay  SearchTerm:J0036001
SearchTerm:Start New Year

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

Martian Year: 36  Martian Month in 1 month format: 12 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 30 degrees

Solar Longitude: 000.1  Sol Number: 1  Change in degrees is +.5 <<-- New Year's Day on Mars
Previous SL:      359.6  Previous Sol: 668

Note that Solar Longitude measurement varies as a function of location in orbit.

Note#2: https://theskylive.com/mars-tracker  This web site shows the astronomical position of Mars.
Minus prefix means Mars is approaching the Sun.  Perihelion occurred at Ls 253 on Sol 485 - Earth Date 2020/08/03
Plus prefix means Mars is moving away from the Sun. Aphelion will occur near 70 degrees Ls (per www.planetary.org)

Note: The computations below are dependent upon both the computations provided by the reference web site and by accuracy of recording of the time of observations.  The calculations use tenths of hours.  The Sun Distance needs to be captured at the moment the time increments to a given tenth.

Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   233,191,542 km Difference is +188413 <= 7690 km/hour at 8.9 on 02/08 (time:8:54(
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   233,003,129 km Difference is +182837 <= 7715 km/hour at 8.4 on 02/07 (time:8:24)

Next up: Star TYC 1227-991-1 Magnitude 12.17 in path/just above Day 0 - ahead about 18 hours - might last two days
Next up: A boomer! HIP 13702 Magnitude 5.55 well below path Day 0 - ahead about 24 hours - will last only one day
Star TYC 1227-974-1 Magnitude 11.77 just above path Day 1 just past Mars - last day for 974

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line trending upward and East as seen from Earth
Light travel time is between 10 and 11 minutes. Communications delay would be 20+ minutes round trip. [10:180,000.000] [11:198,000,000]

In his online interview with Dr. Zubrin at the 2020 Mars Conference, Elon Musk reminded the audience that communications with Mars will necessarily include an intermediary station to handle traffic when the Sun is between Mars and Earth.  Communications delays in that circumstance will increase due to the extra distance to be covered.  Mr. Musk indicated he expects such communication will be handled by laser.  Location would be optimum at poles of solar plane.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

For SpaceNut re #932

Thanks for noting the design of the Business Calendar for Mars!

You are right that there is never going to be a need for a leap year, or a leap month, or a leap week, or a leap day, or any other kind of strange adjustment, such as the Earth calendar has due to it's ad hoc "invention" over thousands of years.

The beauty of the design (for which I credit RobertDyck) is the regularity of the 28 day months, with one day omitted per quarter, and the variable length New Year's Eve.

I understand the Chinese have achieved orbit with their primary vehicle.  They'll be attempting a lander at some point, but I bet they'll wait until after NASA does it's fancy maneuver.

Best wishes to the US team for success!

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Seems weather on mars has been steady thou Insights sensors are not all operational as the atmospheric pressure and opacity are about all the data which is being indicated on its page.
The time of day does matter for a mars landing as it varies 50 kpa over the course of night to mid day and back down as night time comes near.

Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   233,738,784 km Difference is +175984 <= 7618 km/hour at 8.5 on 02/11 (time:8:30)
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   233,562,800 km Difference is +189544 <= 7642 km/hour at 9.4 on 02/10 (time:9:42)

Galaxy: PGC 1568335 RA 3h 2m 44.1s above path Day 0 just ahead of Mars - this too is only good for one day
Star TYC 1228-1784-1 Magnitude 12.12 below path Day 0 Ahead about 9 hours - 1784 is only good for one day
Star TYC 1228-1406-1 Magnitude 12.24 in path Day 1 right at Mars - may be good for another day

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

For SpaceNut re #940

I intend to continue producing "Today on Mars" for the complete year 36 we have just entered.

You are welcome to build upon my work to promote the Business Calendar for Mars, if that is something that makes sense to you.

I have spoken on several occasions of the opportunity available to an entrepreneur who can find a market for the Business Calendar for Mars, combined with the Astronomical Calendar as I have been doing.

The Business Calendar would include 24 glossy pictures instead of 12, and it would include references to Earth events as appropriate, in addition to noting events on Mars.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Mars: 0036/01/10 Tuesday <<-- Days of the week are out of alignment with those on Earth.

Today on Earth: 2021/02/17 Wednesday (Earth Date) Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred August 3, 2020 Earth Calendar]

One day note:

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

Martian Year: 36  Martian Month in 1 month format: 12 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 30 degrees

Solar Longitude: 004.6  Sol Number: 10  Change in degrees is +.5
Previous SL:      004.1  Previous Sol: 9

Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   234,815,300 km Difference is +149143 <= 7450 km/hour at 75 on 02/17 (time:7:30)
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   234,666,157 km Difference is +203627 <= 7486 km/hour at 11.5 on 02/16 (time:11:30)
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   234,462,530 km Difference is +177354 <= 7515 km/hour at 8.3 on 02/15 (time:8:18)

Next up: Galaxy PGC 1596342 in path Day 0 about 18 hours ahead - may be good for two days
Galaxy PGC 1593437 in path Day 1 Just ahead of Mars - may be good for another day

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line trending upward and East as seen from Earth
Light travel in one second is (about) 300,000 kilometers. The distance covered in one minute is about 18,000,000 kilometers.
Light travel time today is between 11 and 12 minutes. Communications delay would be 20+ minutes round trip. [11:198,000,000] [12:216,000,000]

This is a report of an observation that should lead to refinement of the concept of a calendar for Mars.

This topic has followed the progress of Mars over the entire year 35, and the 37 minute difference of time between Earth and Mars, as reported by the French web site used as a reference, has resulted in predictable retardation of the Sol Number every 37 days or so, although the actual number of days has varied between 36 and 39.  Today, the Sol number was still 11 at midnight UTC, which is the default time used by the French web site to compute the time on Mars.

I advanced the Earth time to 1:0:0 UTC, and the Sol advanced to 12.

In the discussion below, I came to the realization that the Sol number needs to be computed as of midnight on Mars, so that the date does NOT vary depending upon the time the Earth observer takes a measurement.  From the observation that advancing the Earth time caused the Mars Sol number to advance, I deduce that the French web site is NOT computing midnight at Mars to determine the current Sol.

Fortunately, this situation was discovered before plans were put into place to produce a hard copy Mars calendar.

Edit#1: Upon reflection, the French web site must be computing midnight at Mars, because the Sol number advanced from 11 to 12 by advancing the UTC time from 0:0:0 to 1:0:0.  The exact nature of the problem to be addressed remains unclear.  The only fact available that is irrefutable is that the French web site showed 11 at UTC 0:0:0, when the Sol number should have been given as 12, based upon the usual progression, as reported in this topic.

One day note:    The US probe Perseverance arrived on Mars!  Date: 0036/01/11
One day note:    The web site used as a reference for this daily report did NOT increment the Sol number. It is still 11.
The last scheduled skip day occurred on February 4 on Earth. The next skip day is expected in March on Earth.

Discussion: There is a possible explanation for why the French web site (jussieu.fr) did not increment the Sol count.
The moment at which the Sol number increments on Mars must be changing with respect to the reporting time on Earth.
The moment at which the Sol number is computed by the French web site is midnight in Greenwich (0:0:0 UTC time)
But the equivalent moment on Mars is necessarily moving at the rate of about 37 minutes.
In other words, midnight on Mars is not aligned with that of Earth.
If time computed on Earth is always based upon Greenwich midnight, then the midnight on Mars will necessary progress by 37 minutes.
So the Sol number should be computed with respect to Mars, and NOT with respect to Earth
To investigate this theory, I advanced the time on the French web site to 4 AM at Greenwich, which is roughly the time difference to the local longitude.
The Sol count advanced to 12 as expected.  However, the location in orbit advanced to 5.7
I changed the Earth time to UTC 1 and the location returned to 5.6, while the Sol remained 12
This is the first time this situation has come up over the past two plus Earth years.  However, I note that the number of Earth days between skip days
has varied from as low as low as 37 to as high as 39.

Conclusion: A Calendar for Mars could(?should) include a precise indication of when midnight occurs on Mars with respect to Earth.
The Sol number is necessarily based upon crossing midnight on Mars.

Edit#1: After thinking about this situation a bit further ...

I am increasingly confident that the current Sol is independent of the time of inquiry, but the time at which the inquiry is made on Earth is relevant

What time is it on Mars? Well, that depends upon where you are.

What Sol is it on Mars?  That too depends upon where you are.

If there is a Greenwich equivalent defined for Mars (and there very well may be) then that location can be used as a reference to compute the time and Sol on Mars.  I'm not sure what the French reference web site is doing.  All I can do is to observe that the French reference web site reported we were still in Sol 11 at UTC 0:0:0 when the normal progression of Sols called for 12 at that time.

It may be too much to ask the programmers of the French web site to show the current time at the Mars equivalent of Greenwich, but if they can (and will) do that, then any progression that may be occurring (other than the expected 39 minutes per day) should show up.

Conceivably the French web site is the Mars time with respect to the local time of the web site visitor.  Since I was early this morning, perhaps the Mars equivalent of Greenwich had not reached midnight.  What is confusing is that the web site shows UTC 0:0:0 as the time of the observation.

Edit#2: I ran a quick check now (three hours after the first check) and confirmed that the French web site is NOT using my local time in performing the computation.  The behavior was the same ... At UTC 0:0:0 the Sol was given as 11, but at UTC 1:0:0 the Sol was given as 12 which is the expected value.

Edit#3: The French web site offers a companion calculator ... it starts with the Year and Longitude specified by the operator, and gives the Earth date.

http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _date.html

Mars year: 36
Solar Longitude: 5.66

Gives Earth date: 2021/02/18

But!

Mars year: 36
Solar Longitude: 5.67

Gives Earth date: 2021/02/19

Edit#4: Oh Great! Google just reminded me both planets have sidereal days ...

23 hours and 56 minutes
Another way to measure a day is to count the amount of time it takes for a planet to completely spin around and make one full rotation. This is called a sidereal day. On Earth, a sidereal day is almost exactly 23 hours and 56 minutes.

Conclusion: The moment when midnight occurs on Mars is independent of Earth. The Sol count reported by the reference site should NOT vary depending upon the time specified on Earth to take a reading.  A hard copy calendar for Mars and Earth should be designed to that the Sol number is based upon the time that midnight occurs on Mar.  That time can be computed with respect to Earth.

The next Skip Day will occur in March on Earth. A Skip Day occurs when the longer Mars Sol accumulates 24 Earth hours.
For those who may be following this proposed calendar closely, there exists a "feature" I had not anticipated.
Days of the week fall behind Earth due to the longer Sol, but they gain when Friday is omitted at the end of a Quarter
337 Earth days were observed to elapse in the 2020 weekday cycle. There were 7 week day transitions and 2 Quarter ends.

For SpaceNut re #948

Thank you for your encouragement!

It is possible very few humans would be interested in this next focus, but your kind words provide an excuse to mention it ...

The daily Mars Calendar report allows a **really* dedicated reader to follow the movement of Mars along its ellipse, much as Tycho did using the crude instruments he had available.  With the modern French web site computations, the interested person can see progress in detail.

Plus prefix means Mars is moving away from the Sun. Aphelion will occur near 70 degrees Ls (per www.planetary.org)

Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   235,358,005 km Difference is +187308 <= 7374 km/hour at 8.8 on 02/20 (time:8:48
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   235,170,697 km Difference is +166548 <= 7402 km/hour at 7.4 on 02/19 (time:7:42)
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   235,004,149 km Difference is +188849 <= 7435 km/hour at 8.9 on 02/18 (time:8:54)

It is easy to see that Mars is slowing down in its progress away from the Sun.  Aphelion is predicted to occur somewhere around Longitude 70 degrees. At that time, the rate of progress of Mars away from the Sun will drop to zero, and shortly afterward the planet will begin it's long "fall" inward.

I have worked out the procedures needed to capture the rate of progress accurately, so the daily reports are closer to reality than had been the case earlier.

Year 36 should contain accurate Rate of Progress figures, within the margin of error of 1 terrestrial minute.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Mars: 0036/01/13 Friday <<-- Days of the week are not in alignment with Earth. Skip Day will be reset per jussieu.fr web site

Today on Earth: 2021/02/21 Sunday (Earth Date) Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred August 3, 2020 Earth Calendar]

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

Martian Year: 36  Martian Month in 1 month format: 12 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 30 degrees

Solar Longitude: 006.6  Sol Number: 13  Change in degrees is +.5 <<== Skip day reset to match jussieu.fr web site
Previous SL:      006.1  Previous Sol: 12

Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   235,523,997 km Difference is +165992 <= 7345 km/hour at 7.4 on 02/21 (time:7:42)
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   235,358,005 km Difference is +187308 <= 7374 km/hour at 8.8 on 02/20 (time:8:48)
Distance of Mars from the Sun is given by theskylive.com as:   235,170,697 km Difference is +166548 <= 7402 km/hour at 7.4 on 02/19 (time:7:42)

Next up: Star TYC 1241-83-1 Magnitude 11.49 above path Day 0 about 5 hours ahead
Galaxy PGC 1612067 RA 3h 23m 19.5s below path Day 1 about 3 hours behind - may still be visible tomorrow
Star TYC 1241-1063-1 Magnitude 12.23 below path Day 1 about 5 hours behind - likely last day for 1063

Mars is executing the "Retrograde" movement as seen from Earth. Earth is passing "under" Mars.
Progress of Mars (as seen from Earth) is transitioning back to Eastward as the retrograde movement continues.
The online solar system display at the link below shows clearly how the Mars retrograde movement will occur in months ahead.
Retrograde movement started 2020/09/08 Sol 520

Month 01 extends from Sol 001 through 028. See post 82 of Holidays topic for current details. <<== There are 28 days in Month 01
