Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Mars:  <<-- Days of the week are out of alignment with those on Earth due to the longer Martian Day. September 2020 next alignment estimate.

For SpaceNut ... this daily post is a candidate for syndication. I'll add recruiting notes at the bottom, as they seem appropriate.

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

Martian Year: 35        Martian Month in 12 month format: 6
Solar Longitude: 165.2    Sol Number: 346

Previous SL: 164.7      Previous Sol: 345

Note that Solar Longitude measurement varies as a function of location in orbit.

Sol 346 is in Month 13 of a Proposed 24 month calendar. See Post 19 of Holidays topic for a summary.
Month 13 extends from Sol 335 through 362. See post 82 of Holidays topic for current details. <<== There are 28 days in Month 13

Sol 346 is Thursday in the Proposed calendar for Mars.

The Next New Year on Mars will occur when Solar Longitude reaches 360 degrees.
The next Skip Day will occur in March on Earth. A Skip Day occurs when the longer Mars Sol reaches 24 Earth hours.
For those who may be following this proposed calendar closely, there exists a "feature" I had not anticipated.
The days of the week are back in alignment temporarily, due to the omission of Friday in the last week of the 2nd Quarter

All forum members are invited to post significant events for this day.
Events of interest will be ON Mars, or relate to Mars. Examples are launches, landings, discoveries

The topic My Hacienda is set up to encourage up to 2750 forum members to build a virtual community.
Each participant "claims" a square kilometer of surface, and shares below surface with the community.
Each Hacienda is a participant in the economy of a thriving interdependent free market.
Each Hacienda provides at least one product or service, and multiple products or services are welcome.

As of this Sol, the number of plots established in Sagan City (2018) is: > 1 (inventory pending) [Thanks to everyone who registered!]

Recruiting Announcement: People are needed to participate in the Sagan City (2018) Virtual Community

The concept is to imagine life on Mars at the level of current 1st Tier civilization on Earth.  This community is assumed well past startup phases.

The objective is to gain a clear understanding of the operation of market forces in a community of 2750 plots.  Community members have needs.

The market is there to meet those needs.  The first step is to identify the needs.

I'd like to thank the members of the Mars Society whose financial support allows the NewMars forum database to flourish.

Recruiting Section for NewMars Forum:

Several initiatives are underway, and opportunities exist for volunteers with appropriate education, skills, talent, motivation and generosity of spirit:

1) kbd512 recently initiated a proposal to launch a vehicle from Earth using US Navy style electromagnetic acceleration
The discussion is progressing to the point of considering location for such a facility.  A leading candidate is Texas bordering the Gulf of Mexico.
kbd512 has proposed microwave energy to supplement chemical energy for acceleration of vehicles to orbit after electromagnetic boost
2) Calliban has been working for some time on an outreach goal of capturing/mining an asteroid. Recent activity includes cocoon wrapping.
There are a number of possible approaches to the challenge of wrapping an asteroid in basalt thread.
3) Calliban has also proposed the use of electromagnetic acceleration of mass from the Moon. This is NOT the Gerard O'Neill mass launcher.
There may be some overlap for a Moon launcher with discussion of an Earth based launcher. Both would use sled based launch vehicles.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

For SpaceNut re #531

This is a topic about a Martian Calendar.

Were you expecting it to be about Mars Research Science?

What I can do is to remove the recruiting text.  It appears not to have achieved the desired result.

At this point, this topic has followed Mars around the Sun almost half the way.  By following the progress of the planet each Sol (by Earth day), it is possible to experience the changing velocity of the planet as it follows its eccentric ellipse.

In addition, this topic appears to have confirmed what I had hoped, that the proposed calendar would work really well for a business calendar.

It would not work for an astronomer, but there exist suitable calendars for that specialized need.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Its been working fine as the calendar and of event noticings. The science would have been a nice thing if there was anything to indicate for events on the calendar but we are in a draught it seems from Nasa and others when it comes to telling us what is going on....

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

For SpaceNut re #533

There are actually a number of scientific measurements taken every Sol.  The daily Calendar post can be compared to an engine on a track running through the neighborhood of the NewMars forum.  Every day, for the past year, this little engine has made it's way through town, and occasionally someone attaches a car with scientific or related data.  We are fast approaching one Earth year since New Years on Mars.  Mars itself is a considerable distance from the mid-point of its orbit, and the count of Sols is past mid-year, yet the Solar Longitude is 167.9, well short of 180 degrees.  I understand that Mars has an eccentric orbit, but this set of facts means that the planet is going to really have to step on the gas to make it back to New Years on Mars in 668 Sols.  I went back and confirmed that the daily longitudinal progression was .5 degrees from New Years Day on Mars, and we are now starting to see more occurrences of .6 degrees. The planet itself of course, is progressing in amounts not rounded to the nearest tenth of a degree, but the French web site rounds so rounded numbers are what are reported.

If you would like to see scientific data appended to the daily Calendar train, you can enlist/recruit someone to take on that responsibility.  Data which I would find of interest would include high and low temperature readings, news of any earthquakes overnight, and any other unusual or surprising events which the existing suite of instruments on Mars are reporting.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today marks one Earth year since this forum began following Mars around the Sun.

http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php … 01#p155901

The post at the link above shows Sol 1 on 2019-03-24

What I find interesting about the situation of Mars on this day is that the count of Sols is 357, well past mid-year, which would be 334 Sols, but the planet has not yet reached 180 degrees of longitude.

The web site I'm using to track the planet is: http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

I admit the possibility that the French web site might be in error, so would appreciate someone in the forum trying to find another (hopefully authoritative) source to fix the position of the planet in its orbit.

However, if the French web site is accurate, then Mars is ** really ** going to have to get into gear to return to Longitude 360 in the next 331 Sols.

Another resource which may be available is a graphical representation of the orbit of Mars, showing the eccentricity for which it is famous, and specifically the curious circumstances of the reported longitude for the current Sol.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

For SpaceNut re #543

Nice Diagram! And ** what ** a source!

In the post to which you are responding, I have set out the perplexing result of my "observations" (as given by the French web site) of the plodding pace of Mars around the Sun over the past Earth year.  Mars has NOT traveled half the degrees of longitude, but the number of Sols is well past mid-point of the Martian year.

In beginning the tracking activity, I was focused almost entirely on proving the utility of the proposed calendar for business purposes.  At this point, I'd like to remind anyone who is interested, RobertDyck made significant contributions to the refinement of the proposed calendar.  His contributions may be studied in his Holidays Topic, where the current Martian Calendar ideas started out.

However, in single-mindedly following the progression of Sols from the (arbitrarily chosen) "New Year's Day" on Mars, I'm coming face to face with the eccentricity of the orbit.  To put it simply, the planet is NOT going to be back at Longitude 360 in the remaining Sols, if it maintains the current plodding pace.

If you want to test your mettle in this situation, you could (if you have the time) specify where the planet is on the diagram you have posted.

That information could usefully be supplemented with location of the planet on Mars New Year's Day, 365 Earth days ago.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

For SpaceNut re #545

Thank you for those interesting and useful links!

The first, from JPL, provides the exact location of Mars, but NOT in terms of longitude in its orbit.

The second shows the longitudinal progression if the Mars orbit is assumed to be circular:

Mars completes one revolution around the sun (360 degrees) in 687 days, so that means it moves 0.524 degrees per day (360 degrees/687 days). In 259 days (the travel time from Earth to Mars along the Hohmann transfer path), Mars will have moved 136 degrees (0.524 degrees per day * 259 days).

What I have been observing is a predominance of .5 degree advance, with the occasional .6 degree advance, which would make sense if the French web site displays the longitude by truncating to the nearest tenth of a degree.

I am reconciled to the possibility that the French site may be showing results that are in error.

I'll keep reporting the daily status of Mars as computed by the French site, with the caveat that I am no longer confident the information is accurate.

If there is someone in the forum, or who is knowledgeable on this subject and willing to become a member in order to add clarity to this question, I'd welcome the input.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Julian day for when September 16, 2018, Mars reaches perihelion, its closest point to the sun in its 2-year orbit is day 259 for year 2018. So that is 365-259 = 106 days in 2018 for travel add 365 for year 2019 = 471 and today is March 24, 2020 is day 84 which make the progress around its orbit is 555 out of the 687 days to go around the sun. Thats roughly 80.7 % completion. Or about 114 days to southern summer.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

For SpaceNut re #547

Thank you for the analysis you've provided of Mars progress in its orbit from Earth point of view.

This topic is about the progress of Mars in it's orbit from Mars point of view.  The report given each Earth day shows the current Sol on Mars, and the longitude of the planet in it's orbit as computed by the French web site used for reference.

The issue at hand is that the count of Sols exceeds half the number of Sols in a Martian year, but the French web site is showing the planet as having not yet reached 180 degrees of Longitude.

I appreciate your work on this problem so far, but what is needed is another source that computes longitude, with respect to the 0/360 degree point used by the French site.   The entire history of observations over the past Earth year are preserved in the forum archive for anyone to check.

I would be happy to contact the French web site administrator, if I could be confident there is a bug (a) and (b) that we know what it is.

Let's try to avoid using Earth days for this topic, if we can.  Martian Sols are confusing enough << grin >>.

20200325 Concern about Longitude Report

Hello,

Thank you for considering this inquiry.

For the past Earth year, the newmars.com/forums site has been posting a daily report on the status of Mars as it progresses in its orbit, from New Years Day on Mars (Longitude 0) to today.

There is a curious discrepancy between the display provided by the site you so kindly provide, and the count of Sols from the same site.

You can see the progress of daily observations over the past year, if you visit newmars.com/forms and look for the Martian Calendar topic.

A group of members have devised a calendar for Mars that appears to work well for business purposes, and for that, the daily Sol number report is sufficient.

However, the daily Longitude report is the concern, and the reason I am writing to ask for help.

The Sol count is now 358, well over 334, which would have been half way through the Martian year.

However, the Longitude measurement is only 170 degrees.

This can be accounted for if the Martian orbit is eccentric, but I am becoming increasingly concerned that the daily progress of the planet in its orbit is shown as either .5 degrees of longitude, or .6 degrees of longitude, which would be consistent with computation of longitude as though the orbit of Mars were a circle.

Please take a moment to visit the site, create an account to provide input.  I would be most grateful!
