Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today in space history for the US was not just reaching orbit but actually cirling the globe for the first time. The US reached its orbital goal on February 20, 1962, when John Glenn made three orbits around the Earth.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Mars:  <<-- Days of the week are out of alignment. Next alignment will occur near October 6, 2020 on Earth

This will be a special week for those using the proposed Martian calendar. Friday is omitted once a quarter.

<< This day is Leap Day on Earth >>
The leap day is added every four years to help keep the calendar aligned with the orbit of the Earth.
On Mars, this calendar provides a similar function by skipping one day every Quarter (this Friday for example) and extending New Years Eve.  Thus, when using this calendar, the time of the calendar and the physical "time" of Mars in its orbit would be precisely aligned once a year.

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

Martian Year: 35        Martian Month in 12 month format: 6
Solar Longitude: 158.3    Sol Number: 334

Previous SL: 157.8      Previous Sol: 333

Note that Solar Longitude measurement varies as a function of location in orbit.

The concept is to imagine life on Mars at the level of current 1st Tier civilization on Earth.  This community is assumed well past startup phases.

The objective is to gain a clear understanding of the operation of market forces in a community of 2750 plots.  Community members have needs.

The market is there to meet those needs.  The first step is to identify the needs.

I'd like to thank the members of the Mars Society whose financial support allows the NewMars forum database to flourish.

Month 12 of 24: This is the last month of the Second Quarter.

Several initiatives are underway, and opportunities exist for volunteers with appropriate education, skills, talent, motivation and generosity of spirit:

1) kbd512 recently initiated a proposal to launch a passenger carrying vehicle from Earth using US Navy style electromagnetic acceleration
2) Calliban has been working for some time on an outreach goal of capturing/mining an asteroid. Recent activity includes cocoon wrapping.
3) Calliban has also proposed the use of electromagnetic acceleration of mass from the Moon. This is NOT the Gerard O'Neill mass launcher.

Recruiting Announcement: People are needed to participate in the Sagan City (2018) Virtual Community

Recruiting Section for NewMars Forum:

Several initiatives are underway, and opportunities exist for volunteers with appropriate education, skills, talent, motivation and generosity of spirit:

1) kbd512 recently initiated a proposal to launch a passenger carrying vehicle from Earth using US Navy style electromagnetic acceleration
The discussion is progressing to the point of considering location for such a facility.  A leading candidate is Texas bordering the Gulf of Mexico.
kbd512 has proposed microwave energy to supplement chemical energy for acceleration of vehicles to orbit after electromagnetic boost
2) Calliban has been working for some time on an outreach goal of capturing/mining an asteroid. Recent activity includes cocoon wrapping.
There are a number of possible approaches to the challenge of wrapping an asteroid in basalt thread.
3) Calliban has also proposed the use of electromagnetic acceleration of mass from the Moon. This is NOT the Gerard O'Neill mass launcher.
There may be some overlap for a Moon launcher with discussion of an Earth based launcher. Both would use sled based launch vehicles.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Eccentricity of Mars Orbit

For those who might be following the progress of Mars around the Sun, it has been noted that the amount of progress in longitude has been increasing ever so slightly over the Sols.  It is now normal for the increment to be .5 degrees, and there was even a .6 degree change recently.

However, the aspect of the orbit that I would like to point out today is the fact that while the number of Sols has passed midpoint of 334, the planet itself is still far from half way around the Sun.

The current Sol is 345 (according to the French site used for reference), but the Solar Longitude is 164.7.

http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html

According to Wikipedia, the eccentricity of Mars orbit is .0934.

There are a significant number of citations delivered by Google for the question: eccentricity of Mars orbit

The French site is showing the proposed 12 month calendar, which is NOT the focus of this topic in the newmars forum.

However, given that the French site is using the 12 month calendar, and given that the Sol count is less than 180, it makes sense that in the 12 month calendar, this is still month 6.

If this hypothesis is correct, the month shown by the French site should increment to 7 when the Sol count reaches 180.

The superiority of the 24 month calendar proposed and tracked in this topic for business purposes seems clear. It would seem less useful for use by an astronomer, who might be better off using the 12 month calendar, if the need is to be able to observe midyear accurately.

Another prediction that flows from this analysis is that the change of longitude every Sol will continue to increase as the planet approaches Longitude 180.

For reference, this topic began daily tracking of the progress of Mars in post #99:
http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php … 01#p155901

The site at the link below reports the Earth time between Mars oppositions will be (on average) 780 days:
https://science.larouchepac.com/kepler/ … syear.html

If this figure is accurate, it would seem reasonable to expect Mars to reach Longitude 180 after 390 Earth days.

According to timeanddate.com, we can expect to see Mars cross Longitude 180 on or near April 17, 2020 on Earth.

***
Following up, the site at the link below provides a convenient calculator: Convert Sols to Days (sidereal)
http://www.kylesconverter.com/time/sols … (sidereal)

The calculator shows that 668 Sols on Mars is equal to 688.24 Sidereal days on Earth.  Sidereal days are 4 minutes shorter than solar days.

www.planetary.org gives 687 as the number of Earth days in a Martian year.

en.wikipedia.org adds clarification with this citation:

Timekeeping on Mars - Wikipediaen.wikipedia.org › wiki › Timekeeping_on_Mars
Jump to Definition of year and seasons - The length of time for Mars to complete one orbit around the Sun is its sidereal year, and is about 686.98 Earth solar days, or 668.5991 sols. ... is 93,000 Martian years (175,000 Earth years), much ...
