Re: Mars Needs Saloons! - Mars for Free People

You don't need guns on mars. Period.

There won't be criminals on Mars?

Criminals in the sense that you need guns to subdue them? No.

I'm sure there will be crime, just not the violent kind.
Criminals do an equation: Chances of being caught.
Non-criminals do a different equation: Penalties for being caught.

By reducing opportunity for succeeding in crime, crime is reduced. Criminals don't often care about the penalty associated with the crime- they have made absolved the psycholocial restraints at the point of deciding to commit a crime.

*Josh, did you want to elaborate a bit more?  I disagree with your statement, on the face of it.  So long as there are people of criminal bent (some greater than others), there will of course be crime.

As for guns themselves in the environment we're discussing; it would be insane.  Related topic material was discussed at these message boards months ago.  Someone, at that time, suggested tazers instead, for whatever law enforcement would be required (as it probably will be required once the population numbers swell).

I like being optimistic along with most others here, but we can't deny the baser side of human nature and dealing with it while protecting society at the same time.

I hope there's pigs with tasers, that'll make them easily killable.

Cindy,

Josh, did you want to elaborate a bit more?

Aw, but girl, it's just the same old stuff... I should note that I didn't mean there would be zero crime, but I think if we chose the right system it could be reduced drastically, if not be non-existant over long periods.

So long as there are people of criminal bent (some greater than others), there will of course be crime.

Yeah, but what makes a criminal? Obviously if people have to pay for life support systems, you're going to have people failing and resorting to criminal behavior to survive. The only other kind of criminal behavior (outside of mental breakdowns which aren't really preventable), is that of someone who wants to gain complete and utter power. Both types of criminal behavior are avoidable, I think. Provide everyone with basic necessities, and decentralize everything enough so that any one person will be unable to gain control.
