Re: The Case Against Mars - Why Mars is not a good target!

Great. From the logic that brought us McDonalds burger boxes and the destruction of the Kyoto protocol comes the idea of the disposable atmosphere.

I can't think of a quicker way to throw away the resources of the solar system than letting them leak away into space on Mars. What a wonderfully far-sighted idea.

ANTIcarrot.

Throw away the resources of the solar system by letting them leak away into space on mars?  You're an idiot.  Period.

Some people's other ideas on this Moon CEV + Mars plan may be wrong, some of the other designs are way off and it might be time to look at this in realistic fashion, back to hard facts and reality... past designs for Mars exploration never came to be because the material, science and craft were more fantasy than reality. Jeff Bell can be anti-NASA and sure can rant but this time he makes some good points.
I am all in support of manned missions if done correctly but he case I would put against Mars is using un-proven technology, and questionable design that would give great risk to people's lives. Mars is often sold to the public with too much fantasy and sci-fi like there is life on Mars, the red planet has lots of drinkable water, we can build city scapes there
but it could become the planet of death if an error happens  and it could set NASA back worse than the Challenger did, with much greater fallout.

All of NASA mars reference missions have relied on proven technology. The 90 day report may be another story.
