Re: Interesting MOC pictures - Place to post interesting MOC pictures

That reminds me of the http://www.astro.uwo.ca/~jlandstr/plane … Cantaloupe Terrain on Triton

I wouldn't be surprised if they formed in a simular way.

*Very aptly named, I'd say.  smile  I'm not sure I've seen that image before; thanks for sharing it.  Lovely...and that big X-shaped groove, nice.

All the things we of this generation are able to see thanks to our technologies, which astronomers of yesteryear would have given their right arm to see!  How the heck can anyone possibly be bored??

Re: Interesting MOC pictures - Place to post interesting MOC pictures

We think of Mars as being an alien world, but it looks very Arizona-like.

Imagine a MER type robot on http://www.solarviews.com/eng/triton.htm]Triton. I think we would see a truly alien landscape.

Or how about a MER on IO?

http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/jpeg/P … g]slumping of soil in the gullies opens cracks as it slips downhill, suggesting very "mud-like" behavior.
This must have happened some time ago, as the gullies can be seen covering up or cutting across many of these faults.

Re: Interesting MOC pictures - Place to post interesting MOC pictures

Hmmm, yes, I suppose we're bound to employ Occam's Razor in explaining those streaks and, if dry avalanches are perfectly able to explain them, then that's where we'll have to leave it until better evidence becomes available.
    Thanks, Atomoid!

here's http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA06453]a really striking image  of some dust-devil-caused streaks.
As with the dust-avalanche slope-streaks, the dust gets disturbed making a bright/dark difference that is just unbelievable...

Yes Atomoid, it's a nice picture of dust-devil streaks but Cindy beat you to it on this one over at "Devils and Dunes".
Not that it matters. It's good to see it again.   smile

This pic surely has to rank as one of the all-time best.

*Hi Robert:  Isn't it, though?  Crazy corkscrews!

And you can see the spots (due to the unthawing process) down there on the ground BETWEEN the "rolls."  I wonder how high the "rolls" themselves are.

Crazy!  I want a poster of this.  It should make National Geographic.

http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewsr.htm … ]Landslide in Sirenum

*Very cool pic.  Half the slope (smack dab in the middle) is obliterated but can almost make out the obscurred terrain beneath.  Must be very fine sand, no?  In fact, looks like sand is blowing across the right central portion of the scene as the pic was taken.

And that curving trio of craters at the bottom of the pic, each one smaller than the next (Papa Crater, Mama Crater, Baby Crater)

Re: Interesting MOC pictures - Place to post interesting MOC pictures

It seems that mineral jerosite (hope its written correctly!) has been found in areas  of Mariner valley..other pics suggest sedimentary deposits  in other areas such as Holden crater,,,well..mapping the areas containing minerals that could be linked to a water story on Mars would give us an idea as to where the presumed lake or ocean was on the planet or locations as to where the water system if any,on Mars back in the Noachian period!Mars Express is doing a lot of progress as well as i expect that to be supported by the operation of Mars Reconnossance orbiter in 2 years time.Exciting times in the exploration of the RED planet! big_smile
