Topic: Terraformation » Changing Mars' Atmosphere
This may be the aimless inquiry of a neophyte, but is it possible for something like a bomb to be sent to mars with certain materials (e.g. oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, etc.) in an extremely concentrated form..exploded in Mars' atmosphere and over time change the atmosphere and create opportunity for life? For example could the proportionate ingredients create a greenhouse effect on mars to warm the planet.
A subquestion that comes to mind is that would the martian atmosphere be able to hold all the gases sent?
This opening post for a new topic won a nice reply from Martian Republic, and that was followed by another thoughtful reply by RobS.
The topic persisted through #11, with all additions thoughtful, with varying degrees of reliability. RobertDyck contributed.
I'll send the email, assuming sbcglobal.net is still active.
Alas, sbcglobal.net is no longer in service.

Thanks for the confirmation the emails reached you.
It ** seems ** to me as though the email subsystem is behaving better since we reported the Server Errors. We aren't being given reports on any work that might have been done, but I deduce from the DNS cache rebuild that the application might have been moved to different hardware.
I've skipped the email processing when higher priority needs call for time, but I will try to get back on a daily schedule soon.

Thanks for the confirmation! I received two copies of the confirmation. Whatever work Mr. Burk might have done on the web site seems to have improved performance of the email subsystem.
Our candidate for today is: KCC Member 292 (arrived in 2002 shortly after RobertDyck)
The email provider has four segments. Three segments work but the "mail" segment does not respond.
Since the first three segments respond to ping, I'll assume the "mail" segment is set not to respond to ping.

The Apache Server error seems to be still happening, as reported by members, but the trade-off of more reliable email service is an unexpected benefit.

Do any of you know anything about ChemCam and other equipment Rovers use in order to search for ever existent water on Mars? I am doing a research as part of my studies and would be very thankful if any of you could fill out a short questionnaire for my primary research! Here is the link for the questionnaire goo.gl/forms/rWFdMZUfKwZM7tbu1 please copy and paste in your browser

I'll send an email. This appears to have been a legitimate inquiry.
The IP address captured by FluxBB in 2019 is reported by Whois to be a page set up for Wikipedia editors who are not logged in or do not have an account.
I interpret this as possibly a reflection of someone working on a Wikipedia post, or it might just be a convenient way to insulate one's own IP address by using one that belongs to Wikipedia.

Topic: Interplanetary transportation » Space Elevator news »
The post itself is #23 in a topic that seems to have been fairly active at the time.
SpaceNut posted an announcement about "Space Elevator Games"
neizero responded to Kaladasa ...
The last post in this topic was by ciclops in 2008, about a climber competition in that year.
Interest in the Space Elevator has certainly waned since 2008 ... The studies of what is possible in a 1 G field have (apparently) convinced even the optimistic that a space elevator based upon known materials is unlikely to exist at Earth, if the goal is to reach from GEO to the surface.
In more recent times (perhaps here in the forum with one of Mars_B4_Moon posts (or perhaps Void's)) I have seen a mention of use of the Space Elevator concept to stretch from a station in LEO to an elevation accessible by an air breathing vehicle.
Our desire is to get the starter ribbon up in as few launches as possible balanced with as few dollars as possible in the timeframe we've set aside. Unless the government decides to subsidize our launches, it seems likely that private industry will be more able to satisfy our requirements. That doesn't, of course, rule out the possibility of using NASA.
Talking about timeframe, the guys from liftport mention on their website to get the first cable working by 2018. I find it hard to believe that finding a sufficiently strong cnt-composite-material and an efficient method for its production and building the infrastructure (factories, ocean platform, laser-systems etc.) can be accomplished in only 10 years. Timeframes of past space projects of comparable mass dimensions teach you that it will take much longer than that. So, Joe_LiftPort, how do you plan on getting the cable up and working by 2018?
I'll send the email.

Topic: Meta New Mars » Question about Mars.
This is for a school project. Are there any raw materials or elements on Mars that can be valuable (like gold) on Earth? Please help, kthx.
http://newmars.com/forums/post.php?tid=4712&qid=89465
Rxke came back with a very nice (generous) reply suggesting platinum group metals might be easy to retrieve on Mars, and they would be valuable on Earth.
Robert M. Blevins came back with an objection about the cost of shipment from Mars to Earth.
Grypd then came back with a prediction that Mars might become a resource for food and water to asteroid miners.
The topic ended there in 2006....
The short discussion did not consider the perspective of Martians ... The question might be rephrased as what elements would be most valuable on Mars to Martians.
I still like Rxke's reply, and suspect that his prediction is very likely to be tested with enthusiasm.
This would be a perfect question for ChatGPT, so I'll ask.
The link below is to a transcript with ChatGPT ... the answer is based upon orbital observations, and low concentrations are reported based upon data cut off at 2021.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1yB4 … sp=sharing
The original post by Rxke in 2006 predicted that PGM would be found in fallen asteroids, just as they are on Earth.
It will (probably) take on-site investigation to find such concentrations, if they are present.
In any case, I'll send an email.

Let's see which topic our candidate chose: Life on Mars » Is Terraforming Mars a Pipe Dream?
One thing to point out about Mars having a weak magnetic field and thus loosing its atmosphere.
That will take a looooong time.
Its not like the atmosphere will blow away in a week, or even in decades. Your talking something thousands or tens of thousands of years.
Which is probably going to be long enough to either refresh it, or come up with another solution or another planet
The post itself looks sensible.
Never-the-less, considering the time of the registration, I'd be reluctant to send to the email address.
