Re: Nuclear Powered Crawler-Transporter for Mars

You can even see the two crawlers hanging out!

With NASA’s mobile launcher on the move, here’s a road map to Artemis II
https://arstechnica.com/space/2023/08/n … rtemis-ii/

NASA's repaired and upgraded mobile launch platform moved back to its launch pad at the Kennedy Space Center this week. This marks a transition from refurbishment after the launch of the Artemis I mission last year into preparations for Artemis II—the Moon program's first flight with astronauts.

The giant structure sustained more damage than expected during the first launch of NASA's Space Launch System rocket last November. The 380-foot-tall (116-meter) launch tower has been parked just north of the iconic Vehicle Assembly Building since January, undergoing repairs and modifications to prepare it for its next use on Artemis II.

That work is now largely complete, and NASA's Apollo-era crawler-transporter began moving the launch platform back to Launch Complex 39B on Wednesday for about four months of testing. Then, if all goes well, NASA will declare the structure ready for stacking of the SLS Moon rocket for Artemis II.

Getting back to the Nuclear Crawler idea

I was brain storming ideas on large scale constructs on Mars, a super sized building Mars could be moved, it might move in sections and have a type of transport or housing area that might double as a World's Fair Expo or Sports Event.
Perhaps a Crawler could be used in construction, maybe be part of a system Polytetrafluoroethylene pads and hydraulic pistons pushing large buildings into place, a Stadium perhaps or a Hotel Bus Terminal / Train Station on Mars. The convertible stadiums would be pushed and maybe have sections that lock in or can also be easily removed, or moduable stadiums. It allows for the movement of parts of the grandstand to allow for a change of the playing surface shape, or putting on a sales event or entertainment gig or help for hospitals or housing, Stadium Australia or Accor Stadium, the London Stadium formerly known as Olympic Stadium, Saitama Super Arena Japan, Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium, Olympic Stadium in Montreal Quebec Canada, U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.

Re: Nuclear Powered Crawler-Transporter for Mars

It would be useful in that having it would allow for future relaunching what will be landing site starships that will have from 2 initially with each cycle only returning the crewed vehicle. Using a Vertical launch building to bring the freshly landed crew into would give shirt sleeve ability to go through it completely before each launch.
One also wants to be able to reuse the cargo and possibly add via conversion more crew starships to the fleet of them that will target mars with much needed cargo initally but allow for other locations to be explored from the base on mars.
