#201 Re: Martian Politics and Economy » Nucks - Nucks » 2003-05-24 18:04:50

Ian

One outgrowth of the technology that they are developing to achieve the sub-critical deonation is a possible  defensive weapon capable of detonating nukes at a distance.

Could the method for detonating nukes at a distance be used for the nuclear propulsion that a lot of people in the marssciety are talking about?

Ian

That report said that they plan to research "mini-nucks". How "mini" are they?

Hi. I somehow can't get through to the Marssociety websight. Does anyone know what's wrong with it?

#204 Re: Martian Politics and Economy » Nucks - Nucks » 2003-05-19 13:40:46

Ian

I heard that the us wants to do testing of new nuclear weapons for war purposes. Is this true? If it is, what do you think about it and how can it be stopped?

I just wanted to know if the marssociety is a feudal system? Please reply.

#207 Re: Water on Mars » Space.com article - space.com article » 2003-04-30 11:26:52

Ian

Hi. Did anyone here see the article that space.com published about Mars express having ground penetrating radar on it to look for underground water a mile under the martian surface? Could the first spaceships that have humans in them that go to mars have a similar device in them to help the people who go to mars first find a good place to land there that has water underground.

#208 Re: Human missions » Artificial Gravity » 2003-04-29 11:43:02

Ian

Woud't it be easier to first simulate zero g in freefall and then the tether system and artificial gravity using centrifugal force in freefall and also some experiments that are related to this on the ground.

#209 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » Millenium Tower » 2003-04-24 05:55:51

Ian

Will it be a closed ecosystem liike the science fiction idea of a millenium tower that was proposed in Star Trek Voyager. Are they using a similar idea to build this huge tower?

Hi. I was just reading this artical in Scientific American about parallel universes. I just wanted to know what anybody thinks about it. Here's the websight http://www.sciam.com/article....catID=2

#211 Re: Human missions » Artificial Gravity » 2003-04-20 14:59:12

Ian

Hi. I was just reading Einstein's theory's of gravity and I just wanted to say that I know that 1 g could be simulated if you travel at a certain speed. I also want to say that this might be usefull considering people might or might not want to feel "weightlessness" on the long trip to mars.

#212 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » Astronomy hangups - Knowledge vs. comprehension » 2003-04-15 11:48:56

Ian

Well, for number 1, doesnt gravity do exactly that?  It's a force with no mass, yet it exerts a pull on mass.  its hard to understand quite how it works-only that it does.

i have a "hangup" with the wormhole theories.  if they existed, as sagan said, as black holes, how could we use them to travel through?  as soon as you passed through the center, even assuming you could do this, you would be sucked right back to the center by gravity.  thus, there is no way of exploiting the wormhole to shorten travel, in my understanding.

How can you tell if gravity has no mass?

#213 Re: New Mars Articles » Supporting Mars in the face of other ills - About a comment on an New Mars article » 2003-04-15 11:39:20

Ian

On this article about convincing the public to pay for a mission to Mars, someone made a very good point about why the public might be interested in Mars. I liked it so much I'm going to point it out here:

"Maybe what's needed is simplicity. Next to the donation box for the cancer victim there is a box for supporting a mission to Mars. Who knows, the first person who contributes might be a cancer victim. I think for one lacking a dream or searching; it is those who dream them up they depend on."

--------------
Editor of New Mars, Generation Mars
Phobos: "Even though I didn't like the idea of spinning the Mars hab enroute to Mars because it adds complexity, I think Shaun is right, maybe we better set that sucker on the spin cycle."

Couldn't someone donate money to both the cancer victim and the mission to mars at the same time?

#214 Re: Not So Free Chat » Mining the asteroids - Is it possible to mine the moons of Mars » 2003-04-13 13:21:02

Ian

I once saw something in the book called "Pale Blue Dot" that had ideas for setting up colonies on some asteroids and I was wondering if this could be done on the moons of Mars?

#215 Re: Not So Free Chat » slavery - why does it still exist? » 2003-04-08 08:01:41

Ian

How can all this be stopped from happening on mars long after colonies get set up there?

#216 Re: Not So Free Chat » slavery - why does it still exist? » 2003-04-04 16:32:36

Ian

Hi. I keep seeing reports that i'm concerned about that say that some people are trafficked into the US as slaves from other countries and I also hear that it goes on in other parts of the world. Does it really still go on?

#217 Re: Not So Free Chat » Seti - Radio Telescopes on Mars » 2003-03-30 17:44:47

Ian

Will people from seti eventually build Radio Telescopes on Mars to search for extratresstrial life? Maybe the Radio Telescopes and the optical telescopes that they can use can be built in orbit somehow and also on the surface.

#218 Re: Not So Free Chat » Environment and Iraq » 2003-03-30 13:46:08

Ian

Does anyone here think that all the smoke and dust that the bombing in Iraq produces will effect Eastern Europes's environment. I know that one time there was a forest fire in Canada and my family could smell it here in Pennsylvania. Will the Iraq bombings have a similar effect on Europe?

#219 Re: Not So Free Chat » President Bush - about bush » 2003-03-23 07:35:28

Ian

Why is President Bush Ignoring the thousands of protesters that are against this war? That's not very democratic is it? Isn't there an election for president next year? Ignoring the thousands of protesters won't get him re-elected.

"The only way I know that we could do that is possibly make education cost again."

What do you mean "cost again"? There should be free schools for people who can't afford to pay for schools.

Section 11. Weapons shall not be transported to Mars. Parliament may adopt statutes that regulate the manufacture and possession of weapons.

How will governments of Mars stop people from smuggling weapons in?

You should check out planetary protection at
