#176 Re: Human missions » Design wanted for Antarctic base - Mars colony? Anyone? » 2004-07-02 09:35:45

As I get it ice never melts on Antartica. Well if you're not to close to the cost.

#177 Re: Human missions » Design wanted for Antarctic base - Mars colony? Anyone? » 2004-07-01 14:33:30

Some thing like http://www.icehotel-canada.com/en/index.en.php]this could be cool.  big_smile

Its made out of snow and ice and you will not pollute antartica with any building materials. Also easy to dumb and move on.

In this http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtm … 566569]new report academics predict that Bush is going to win. Their models have only once been wrong that is when Gore lost from Bush in 2000.

I think that Cobra Commander is not denying global warming but he is saying that you must prove that it / was caused by US citizens / industries.

Now you've got a valid point. If some dirt-farmer believes his crop failure is the result of rich American pigs then it doesn't really matter in a practical sense whether or not it's true if that motivates said farmer to join a terrorist organization and blow up an American target.

Makes me think about the Zapitista in the south of Mexico but they are more fighting / protesting against landowners.

For me I don't care who's side is right or wrong about global warming. Because pollution is the number one threat to childrens lifes (astma, low vertillity, weak immune systems, cancer) and is a more direct threat then global warming.

Not that many people die from pollution, such as cigarette smoke,
It may even make the gene pool stronger by eliminating the weak.
But global warming could be catastrophic, only a few Humans surviving inside military,
under mountain installations, and submarines.

No one dies from cigarette smoke, consuming too much alcohol, old age, asbestos, DDT or even pollution. And I never stated such a thing. Hell you will not even die from handling highly toxic radioactive materials. You don't even die from a car accident but from the frontal impact of some object. A gun also never killed anyone but the high velocity projectile that enters your body and destroys your tissue.

People die from the side effects of pollution or have their lives shortened by it and have general health affected (more sick people).

Global warming can be handled by technology. Pollution is slow poisoning of the human body. It results in malformed children and many other things.

I’m not even going to try and answer the strong vs weak people argument.

Why do you think that the only people that survive a global warming would be military people? Like I said global warming is not like a meteor hitting Earth. There will be food, only now at different places and perhaps less.

I'm sorry but what do you mean with human extinction?

I mean as long as there are animals like fish/chickens and grasses/fruits/vegetables, the human race will not go extinct. The world will maybe not be able to support the 6 billion of today but there will be a balance.

For me I don't care who's side is right or wrong about global warming. Because pollution is the number one threat to childrens lifes (astma, low vertillity, weak immune systems, cancer) and is a more direct threat then global warming.

So I think pollution should be priority nr 1! Global warming to me is like nature parks. Should we conserve the nature park or build a shopping mall?

We should be using the Methane, in the oceans, quickly as possible,
As the Methane deposits, in the past, may have caused extreme warming.

Sorry about this MarsDog but are you some StarWars fanatic?

All your comments are like that little troll from star wars.

#183 Re: Human missions » The Kerry Factor - John Kerry's Views of PlanBush » 2004-06-29 13:48:51

We may have delayed the next ice age.
Then, when the fossil fuels run out,
how are we going to warm Earth up ?

Who cares if the fossil fuels run out. The problem is more are we prepared for it?

At this moment no.

Impossible to have life without energy, is true.
But others, outside USA, think they deserve same rights and opportunities.
Hence, the present world situation.

I never said that others don't have the rights to energy. its just that you brought up the comments about the whitehouse being domininated by oil.

#185 Re: Human missions » Can we finish the ISS - using Delta IV Heavy? » 2004-06-28 19:52:55

This is a certainty as ESA has a real respect for the value of the Euro.

What do you mean with this?

#186 Re: Human missions » Euro version of Mars Direct - Thoughts? » 2004-06-28 19:51:35

Well something happened today i really thought would not.

The Galileo system of Gps satelites the planned european version will be usable in conjunction with the USA's version. This was agreed at the conference today.

What does this mean, well politically it means that something that was a bone of contention between the USA and NASA and Europe and Esa has resulted in union to get it to work better actually delivering benefits to people.

I really thought that with the recent tensions there would have ended up two competing versions of the gps system.
My usual optimistic self had thought no chance of agreement there, but i was pleasantly found wrong.

What does this mean well it could result in real improved relations between the space authorities and it may bring the idea of better space access?

To me it just means they agreed to use TCP/IP for networking or use HTML for the WWW and so fort.

Basically they will use the same communication standard so devices made in or for a particular country are interchangeable with another. Not a big to me happens all the time in the computer world.

#187 Re: Human missions » Euro version of Mars Direct - Thoughts? » 2004-06-28 16:25:48

The problem is the "not invented here" doctrine. Even if the Energia would have a warp drive, the US government couldn't do much about it as they must try to support local businesses before anything else.

Tax payers money should stay in the country. If you want to make exceptions ok, but I think its a good doctrine in general.

#188 Re: Human missions » Euro version of Mars Direct - Thoughts? » 2004-06-28 15:43:51

Saturn would be easier to revive than Energia, as I said earlier. And we know Saturn works.

Energia works also and is cheaper!

#189 Re: Human missions » The Kerry Factor - John Kerry's Views of PlanBush » 2004-06-28 12:42:44

People have even gone as far as to say that the oil interests own the White House.
Kerry gets in , he will have the same masters.

Well if you think of oil as energy then I think that any industrialized country is dominated by its energy demands and  its (foreign) supply.

Only way to break this circle is:

1. Live like the Amish.
2. Alternative forms of energy.

#190 Re: Human missions » The Kerry Factor - John Kerry's Views of PlanBush » 2004-06-28 12:28:19

I just want to add that you are making the mistake at just looking at the person and not the team behind him. As the team will handle most of the tasks of ruling America they are basically more important on whats going to happen and change.

#191 Re: Human missions » The Kerry Factor - John Kerry's Views of PlanBush » 2004-06-28 12:22:56

What I like about Kerry is that he favours "green energy" I put it in quotes because green energy doesn't mean just tree huggers but alternative forms of energy.

What I dislike about him is that he is just more of the same but possibly not Bush. I think thats a bad argument and motivation.

If Nader would run in Europe I would vote for him no question. He is the most like what I think. Some political parties here in Europe should look at Nader as I think his ideas would have more support in Europe then in the USA.

#192 Re: Human missions » Euro version of Mars Direct - Thoughts? » 2004-06-28 11:26:20

The problem as some people already stated here and other places is the "not invented here" that many space agencies policies suffer from which are dictated by local businesses and politics.

#193 Re: Space Policy » President of India calls for joint - US/Indian habitat on Mars by 2050 » 2004-06-28 10:17:29

The primary reason there are poor people is a lack of jobs not food. There is plenty of food worldwide to feed everyone it's just that some cannot afford it.  India's caste system expects the poor  to stay poor and the rich are expected to stay rich.  It is unthinkable for an untouchable in Indian society to become President.  To some degree these rules are being broken down but it's not happening fast enough.  India does not do enough to help it's poor.  There are too many children who sleep on the streets.  Building a space infrastructure should go hand in hand with soup kitchens and welfare benefits for those in need.

So a space colonization program could benefit the poor in the long term. That if they manage to get to the space colony. As it will be probably be a mix of a lot of nationalities, they can leave their cast system behind them. Basically why now a lot of people are fleeing their countries and head to the western world but now they can go to space and perhaps be more wanted as space colonies will be always be short of hands as I think in space colonies economic growth will never stop and grow as there is nothing to stop them from doing so except war. This is off course until there is balance reached between Earth population wanting to move and Space based people ability to reproduce.

However a problem will be if we export also culture to space. So perhaps you will have Muslim, Christian and Hindu kinds of separation and hatred. Or the culture of have and have-nots. However automation, cheap production methods (robotics) and an endless supply of resources will stop the "have and have-nots culture" like cheap plastic goods and mass production did on Earth in some limit. But in space this will be even greater.

Not saying there will be no rich and poor, just that poor have anything they need, the rich just have it gold plated.

#195 Re: Human missions » Euro version of Mars Direct - Thoughts? » 2004-06-27 11:19:39

Esa is a satellite and robotic mission launcher and at this it is brilliant but it will need a major change in goals for Esa to become a major human exploration force. Im sorry to say it will be a while for this to occur.

It doesn't matter much at this point anyway as you need to explore and test your machines before you can send a human mission. The satellite and robotic missions seem to fulfill this first priority.

In the time during the ESA must have successful missions, such as NASA's rovers, which will attract a lot of press and then they can start lobbying for more funds.

#196 Re: Human missions » Euro version of Mars Direct - Thoughts? » 2004-06-27 06:04:16

My big worries/issues/things about a "European DRM" mission is the launch vehicle... the Ariane-VM superheavy would have tripple the engines, tripple the failures of the already shakey system. And, do the Europeans have the money to do the huge amount of enegineering involved?

Technically the Europeans are richer then the USA.

#197 Re: Human missions » Euro version of Mars Direct - Thoughts? » 2004-06-26 16:58:50

I just found out that there is already an euro version of a Mars human mission. Look for the Aurora programme on esa's website.

#198 Re: Human missions » The Kerry Factor - John Kerry's Views of PlanBush » 2004-06-26 16:46:59

Why do you need a HDTV receiver when "simple" digital receiver should do ? I mean upgrade from analog NTSC-->digital NTSC-->HD digital.

Just plain NTSC TV encoded in MPEG 2/4 should free up the airwaves (actually more then HDTV) and a decoder should not cost more then $25.

For most TV programs I don't really care about HDTV, PAL/NTSC is enough being digital should make PAL/NTSC even better.

#199 Re: Human missions » Can we finish the ISS - using Delta IV Heavy? » 2004-06-26 16:21:40

Just let it burn in the atmosphere. Skylab and MIR told the scientists everything they need to know about long-term human presence in space and zero gravity.

I'm sorry but what the hell is going to come out of ISS that is not already known? How ants multiply in zero gravity?

OKay, thats one choice.  :;):

Yet Bush & O'Keefe seem determined to finish it. So why not figure out the cheapest way to accomplish that task?

Just give the ESA or Russian Space Agency the money that the USA was commited to and let them solve it. You know, buy off your stake in the project.

This way NASA:

1. Can concetrate on what's coming next.
2. Save money by decommisioning the shuttle now.
