#176 Re: Not So Free Chat » Russian Mini-Submarine Crisis » 2005-08-06 16:09:00

The good thing is they ASKED for help. Unlike the Kursk where they let 118 good men die. Plus they shouldn't be so suprised. The Russian Navy has rusted beyond beleif. They don't get the proper funding to maintain there ships.

Cool i watched the first one but my Firefox froze. Who ever made this has poured alot of thought into it.

#178 Re: Human missions » Manned mission to Luna in 2018 » 2005-08-05 17:03:32

2218 to the moon? How exicting. I can't wait when i am 75 years old (if no one is stupid enough to cause a big war or i croak before then) when the first manned missiom to mars will happen. After all i am only 17 i got my whole life to look forward to this.

#179 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Antimatter - More viable than fusion? » 2005-08-03 10:23:09

@Austin

You can use  Lead or other Heavy stuff to be around the engine. That will reduce the intensity of the Gamma Radiaton.

Btw Antimatter is THE Holy Grail for scientists.

The only problem with that is getting a superconductor to handle extremly high temperature and beign able to mass produce 1,000 metric ton of antimatter.

Well one can hope one day.

#181 Re: Other space advocacy organizations » Space Industrialization - Should a massive attempt at mining occur » 2005-08-01 13:24:23

If a massive attempt at mining did occur in space. Alot of stuff will become cheaper has competiton rises. This could well drive us to develop faster.

It seems like those guys KNEW of the new planet Xena since 2003. They only released the information when a hacker threatened to do it himself.

#183 Re: Pictures of Mars » Favorite "Mars" movies » 2005-07-31 09:11:35

I don't really watch Mars movies because they usually contain "evil green aliens".

But i did see the last 2 episode of Star Trek: Enterprise before the crap finale.

A xenophobic human terrorist organization called Terra Prime who capture an array in Mars and plan to destroy StarFleet command.

*Terrific cloud gallery (I am definitely a cloud lover).  Captions beneath the pics:

I've seen these -- they are creepy; also, they can have a "downdraft"-jarring sort of movement which is nearly impossible to describe.  My knees actually weakened one time upon seeing those types of clouds, to the point of having to cling to a railing while heading for a basement (tornado warnings issued); the railing is the only thing which kept me on my feet, I was so frightened (despite usually enjoying a good crashing thunderstorm).

Unique.

That's one of the best galleries I've yet found online.

Wow. I have never ever seen any of those clouds before. All we get in London is the boring cloud that we keep seeing day in day out.

I heard in sweden that the MPs don't have bodyguards with them in public. They just act like normal people. The downside of this is that their is no one to protect them.

It is bigger than Pluto, the ninth planet, which is 2,250 km across, and was discovered by three US astronomers. "

#187 Re: Human missions » NASA Calls On Private Sector » 2005-07-29 04:47:37

I realy like the bit where the admit

"We've run the numbers, the budget numbers, and we can't afford this plan -- we simply can't -- if we follow the business-as-usual approach," said Christopher Shank, Special Assistant to the NASA Administrator, the keynote speaker at the conference.

. This is precisely why Space needs its own Government with its own currency based on what its resources will support in off world population terms. We need a Space Commonwealth Now. Before Earth Governments and their populations come down with a bad case of "Stupid".

A budget of fifty million billion to colonize and terraform Mars is the only way to do it.

Hell yeah bring on the "Federation". Otherwise space will lose it's tranquility. Has our history has shown us an authority figure is always needed. Large corporations are good at giving us what we want and need but they are still evil. They need to be controlled.

#188 Re: Human missions » Privatized Human Missions » 2005-07-29 04:32:59

There is just one hurdle. Money and technology. We don't have billions of dollars. Starting our own space program costs money. Also the level of technology hasn't grown for a private exploration.

Maybe some day though.

#189 Re: Human missions » NASA Calls On Private Sector » 2005-07-28 12:02:26

Is this going to be limited to american companies? Lets hope not. If the private sector does take intrest in this the increased competition would be good.

#190 Re: Human missions » NASA is screwed up. - I have no patience left :-( » 2005-07-28 08:22:16

I hate waiting. At the rate NASA is going they will eventually go to Mars but it will probably still be for those lucky astronauts who have a distinguished Air Force carers.

Unless Ansari X-Prize produces alternatives.

#191 Re: Human missions » STS-114 Mission Coverage and Discussion » 2005-07-27 15:28:08

*I could mention having actually witnessed Saturn V launches (although I was but a wee young lass at the time)...now that was something to get excited about.

Hopefully no further untoward events and the crew will arrive home safely.  The shuttle got b-o-r-i-n-g for me in 1977.  {yawn}

And I reckon that's enough said.

--Cindy  roll

P.S.:  And I don't think GCN is being sensationalist.  He's got some very good points.  I'll just be glad when they retired the <expletive deleted> shuttle fleet.

How old are you? I thought in the region of 20-30. Are you 50?

#192 Re: Not So Free Chat » Battlestar Galactica - SO what do you think about the new show? » 2005-07-27 11:36:19

Seen a bit from it. The guy who made it Ronald D.Moore was behind the best Star Trek show. Deep Space Nine.

#193 Re: Not So Free Chat » Political Potpourri VIII » 2005-07-27 11:33:03

PS - - Hillary Clinton wants to expand the army by 80,000 soldiers, so we can "stay the course" in Iraq!

Thats beacause she has to look like she wants to protect america. When the fact is Iraq is inciting more attacks.

She if says she wants to take out the troops out of Iraq. People will say she doesn't want to protect america she won't get elected.

If she does send more troops to Iraq. The insurgents won't give up and will continue. It will also inciti terrorists to attack any country invovled in the Iraq  War.

#194 Re: Human missions » Mission One: a one way ticket to Mars? » 2005-07-27 11:20:10

If we research first the best location, send all the nessessary equipment. I am ready to go and never come back.

Yes me to but why did you have to make 2 posts with the same message?

#195 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » New Discoveries #5 - Deep space, galactic, solar system, etc. » 2005-07-27 11:13:50

Why is it that we can see nubleas and stars lightyears away yet we can't see what's beyond our solar system.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050727/ap_ … PUCUl]NASA "not fazed" by tile situation

*Maybe.

And maybe they're sweating bullets.

--Cindy

They are peeing in their pants probably. They can't say if this is dangerous even if it was.

I hope this urges them to drop the shuttle program.

#197 Re: Unmanned probes » Mars Express (MEX) - ESA orbiter » 2005-07-27 10:49:02

Are the pictures real or an artist impression?

#198 Re: Not So Free Chat » Political Potpourri VIII » 2005-07-27 05:46:37

So what turned peoples into fanatics ?

Anger. You really can't expect people in the Middle East to like America when America is providing and protecting Israel. It doesn't help the matter when American foreign policy allows it to topple government of a weaker country that it doesn't like or attacking other countries for false reasons.

When you watch Bush and Blair speak about terrorism they make it sound like the terrorists are a sad lonely and depressed people who want to opress others. Have they been smoking something? Fighters in Chechnya want to be free their country from Russian control. These people have a reason for doing what they do. The only reason they fight like this is because they don't have a big budget to spend on a military like America and UK does. So they try the David style of slaying Goliath.

At the end of the day politics sucks. Gives me a head ache every time i think about it.

#199 Re: Human missions » NASA is screwed up. - I have no patience left :-( » 2005-07-27 05:27:49

I really think that we shouldn't try any space ventures yet. NASA should stop wasting their money (or should i say tax payers money.) They should use the money on funding new technology and propulsion that could actually help us in the long term.

#200 Re: Human missions » STS-114 Mission Coverage and Discussion » 2005-07-26 18:46:59

I don't want to be evil or something like that. Lets just say theoretically that Discovery meets the same fates has Colombia. Would that be good for Space or not? Since it will probably force the retirement of the shuttle earlier.
