*First off, I'm not a "Bushie."
Cindy, tell me you agree that the worst Islamic atrocities occur in the nations that are our so-called "allies" and that many fewer Islamic atrocities occur in the nations we invade OR show me where I am wrong and we can talk.
*...after you explain to me why you encourage and endorse "we vs they" as regards our nation, but oppose "we vs they" as concerns the U.S. and the Middle East.
--Cindy
Because I am tired of being bashed by the Right (Rove, Limbaugh, Tom Delay, Rick Santorum) with "We v They" messages.
Turning "liberal' into a perjorative. My sympathy for dead and maimed Iraqi children being morphed into sympathy for "terror" after all, they are "lesser beings" mere collateral damage, too bad so sad.
So I grow weary and say fine. Lets fight "fire with fire"
Since the leadership of the Right seems so determined to vilify liberals , okay fine. To quote our President:
"BRING. . . IT. . . ON!" I'll fight.
= = =
In my heart of hearts, I know that in the end there is no "us vs them" anywhere, ever.
Jews, Muslims and Christians all pray to the same God Abraham prayed to.
Every human being, whether Unitarian or Rastafarian, Chinese or Czeck, Austrialian or Austrian, Nigerian or Nepalese is held in equal love by God.
Americans are not especially beloved by God. Loved? Yes. Especially loved? No.
Self esteem comes from knowing: "Ain't no one better than you AND you ain't better than anyone else."
The speech given by Barack Obama at the Democratic convention captures my philosophy on this exactly. But 50.05% of the voters rejected Obama's call for unity.
= = =
Therefore, "Bring It On!"
Bill:
Check out my new sig. . .--------------
Actually, we are the elite. . .Blue States have a significantly higher level of education and per capita income than the Red States and out of every federal tax dollar collected much more than $1 is handed out to the Red States & much less is handed out to the Blue States.
*What's this? You've repeatedly asserted there is no "we vs they." Or does that only apply to West - Middle East issues?
Now you're promoting "we vs they" divisiveness here at home? Isn't that a contradiction?
We don't need this sort of divisiveness in this nation. It only hurts and further divides an already intolerably divided nation. United we stand, divided we fall -- remember? Will the persons whose candidate lost the election continue trying to rub it in with this "Blue vs Red States" divisiveness because they can't accept the election results? How absurd. And yet it'll be the persons most promoting "Blue vs Red States" now who, in 2008, will decry the divisiveness the most then.
C'mon.

I have always met people halfway. Most Bushies won't do that.
Its "Thanks for that half, how about another half, now don't be confrontational."
Cindy, tell me you agree that the worst Islamic atrocities occur in the nations that are our so-called "allies" and that many fewer Islamic atrocities occur in the nations we invade OR show me where I am wrong and we can talk.
We can't simply judge everyone by the actions of a small minority of the people in "their" religious or ethnic group.
In some countries I believe it's not a matter of minorities but the majority. Is it a coincidence this can go on in the Islamic world of today without anyone seemingly noticing, while it causes outrage in the Christian world?
I've even read newspaper columns in the national press where the practice was defended or toned down by an immigrant journalist. Why?
Where are horrific Islamic practices at their worst?
In countries we deem "allies" (Pakistan, Saudi Arabia)
Where are horrific Islamic practices the least?
In the countries we invade. Go figure.
= = =
Our "ally" Pakistan condones gang rape of a sibling as punishment for a brother's crimes. But does Shaun suggest we renounce and sanction Pakistan?
NO!
Why? Because they have nukes.
Hypocrite!
The Moon Treaty and Space Treaty only apply to member states not individuals or corporates outside their country borders.
The basis rule would be to stay out of political issues and earth based government matters, unless they directly impact on the corporates assets and infrastructure or revenue stream/s like any other person or corporate do.
At the end of the day, and long the way to the completion of the infrastructure and space development many issues can arises from small legal issues, to security issues, to other technological and resource issues, all issues have solutions, it depends on the resolution and complications.
I think a Church could build the first settlement on Mars and avoid many of the political issues related to the Outer Space Treaty, the Moon Treaty and controversies over the recognition of private property rights.
I recently read rumors that China may decide to ally with Iran in the event we decide to take out Iranian nuclear facilities. Iran will be one nasty bucket of worms.
After further reflection, post deleted.
Well done Shaun Barrett, a terrific troll. Really sucked me in.

the SS Freedom/Mir-II frankenstein.
Excellent! You came up with that yourself?
It's the best short description for ISS I saw yet. And the analogy is close to perfect, too... Cobbled together from disparate dead or dying projects.. Ill fitting at the joints, lauded as the best thing since sliced bread, but turned out to be a menace... etc etc...
ISS *is* SS Freedom/MIRII Frankenstein.
But what, then, are the yet to be launched 'other countries' components?
May I suggest an edit?
ISS/STS: "The Golden Frankengoose"
http://www.dailybreeze.com/business/art … tml]SpaceX update:
SpaceX is expanding its original Falcon V design to carry a 6-ton payload, up from 4 tons, at a cost to the customer of $16 million, also a steep discount compared with competing rockets.
Hee! Hee!
We figured out ourselves that 4 tons wasn't enough to win Bigelow's prize and look here. . .
Do you think Bigelow and Musk were talking before the terms of the $50 million prize were annoucend?
Bigelow Aerospace in Las Vegas plans to send up a payload on SpaceX's larger Falcon V in November 2005. It will be the first launch of the larger Falcon model.
Mike Gold, Bigelow Aerospace's corporate counsel, acknowledged that his company is taking a risk by ordering an untested rocket.
"While the rocket is untested, certainly the quality of their staff isn't," Gold said. "We've been impressed by Elon and his staff and his company." Gold added that the rocket's price is "extraordinarily competitive."
*Nike?
You mean as in sweatshop labor (35 cents per hour -- or even less [I doubt they pay those workers that much even] -- in Malaysia) Nike?
Sorry Bill; but yes, I do know what you are getting at. Yes, money has to be made some way ( and hopefully *not* via some mega rip-off company like Nike).
But the thought of corporate logos slapped all over Mars, everywhere in sight...ugh.
![]()
I want to see the U.S. taxpayer's dollars at work. I want NASA to be responsible to the taxpayer, I want to see RESULTS...I do not want to be beholden to corporate fat cats, over whom we have zero say and who aren't accountable to us in the least (yeah, go ahead and laugh -- NASA doesn't care what the average Joe/Jane thinks either, but there IS recourse to suggestions or complaints, etc., via writing gov't officials).
And also, I want to be ::a part:: of going to Mars; if U.S. tax dollars get us there, I'm part of it as a taxpayer. Apollo was and is ours because it was funded by the U.S. taxpayer. That's the way I like it (the socialist angle! Nyaaaa).
:;):
--Cindy
First, I agree with you about the sweatshops. If some pampered suburban kid is given $175 pair of Air Jordans MORE of the purchase price should go to the factory workers.
No argument.
Second, if we boycott Nike (for example) and buy US made, that factory worker has NO job whatsoever. Is that good?
Third, if we buy off-label (but still made in sweatshops) and we pay $65 instead of $175 there is a smaller pie to slice, meaning it is less likely we can increase wages for the sweatshop worker.
If the American consumer held Nike's feet to the fire and $1 per pair of shoes (1 of 175) were added to the wages paid, the sweatshop laborer would have a huge increase in standard of living.
= = =
Corporate logos slapped all over Mars? Tacky won't sell anyway so don't worry.

Taxpayer funded? Never going to happen.
Is it fair to say the "Left" seeks to focus all its rage at "us" so we can ignore Arab-originated abuses and terrorism?
How do you propose to end those abuses?
Islamic terror is a fire we must extinguish. Do we throw gasoline or water? Cindy, for years I have been saying:
"STOP THROWING GASOLINE!"
And in response Shaun accuses me of being sympathetic to murderers.
How much longer do we have to pay for the mistakes of President Truman? If the track record of Arabs is any indication, it's going to be "eye for eye, tooth for tooth, Jihad!" until the end of time.
So what is the solution? Kill them all?
We need to talk to them (successfully) or kill them all.
You don't win a talking argument by starting out telling "them" how evil they are.
*No, we don't kill them all.
Seems the only options >they want to give us< are:
1. Betray Israel.
2. Kill them all.
3. Bow down and submit to Allah.NONE of those are options, in my books.
This is precisely what bin Laden and the terrorists want.
= WE = need to find additional options the average Islamic person will accept.
Getting rid of Saddam? Not a bad start.
Sending in Paul Bremer to assimiliate Iraq (like the fictional Borg) into the western realm? Not such a good idea.
= = =
Remove Saddam and hand Iraq to Sistani, a Shia who bin Laden considers an apostate. And leave.
on the side of outrage note, those she had been helping and working with all those years should also feel outraged at what had occurred to her as well for she believed she was one of them.
The vast majority of Iraqis are outraged and horrified at Hassan's death. My reading also suggets that they are furious at the idea that the solution to such atrocities is to give Allawi and the Americans more support.
The trouble is you want to make purchase from those that are going to donate to the cause not just identity brands you want your organization to be associate with.
If Nike pays $100 million per year to place their swoosh on the slippers worn by Mars settlers, aren't they contributing to the cause?
Yeah, but what can the little guy do Bill?
Write a book.

You don't win a talking argument by starting out telling "them" how evil they are.
So do we seek to placate them continually at our own expense? They will seek placation continually -- bloodily and violently so. They've proven this for decades.
They? Who they? Which they? All of them?
Why did bin Laden do 9/11? Because the average Muslim was not sufficiently anti-western for his purposes.
Bomb NYC. US troops level Fallajuh and now bin Laden recruits new terrorists.
bin Laden sets a fire and we respond with gasoline.
How much longer do we have to pay for President Truman's decision (the creation of Israel)?
Until we make it right. Whatever "right" may be.
How did we stop Egypt and Israel from fighting? We bribed the Egyptians with billions of dollars. Today, we pay Cairo billions of dollars each year not to fight with Israel. But we call it foreign aid.
One solution?
Landfill and build a big island in the Med Sea. Expensive? Yeah, sure, but remember, while God made the world, the Dutch made Holland.
Invest a few trillion dollars for infrastructre. Isle de Palestine, or Island New Israel. I don't know, flip a coin?
Jerusalem? International city not governed by Israel or Palestine. Author Tom Clancy once suggested letting the Vatican control Jerusalem. Being Catholic, that's fine by me, but others may object. ???

Telling the Palestinians. "Too bad, so sad, get over it" just won't work, at least IMHO.
Use the settlement of space to create "killer" iconic brand identities. There, that is my idea on how to make money on space.
Buy the IBM ThinkPad notebook because that is the brand all the Mars settlers have been issued.
Fly Branson's Virgin Domestic airline (rather than American or United or Southwest) because Branson gives you a suborbital lottery ticket in lieu of frequent flyer miles.
We are the product that is seeking freedom from the ingredients.
I like this way of phrasing it. Nicely said.
We Americans seek "freedom" from the constraints of society yet without society it is impossible to be human. The ancient Greeks (Aristotle) once said: A man without a city is either a God or a beast.
To the extent the American interpretation of freedom requires autonomy from society, are we then Gods or beasts?
Cindy, we can control what we do. We can alter our policies and be more effective, or less effective.
Outrage at the kidnappers is understandable but FUTILE.
Outrage at OUR failure to provide security is outrage that can lead to a solution,
The "Right" seeks to focus all our rage at "them" so we ignore the failings of our own leadership.
As usual http://www.juancole.com/2004/11/more-on … .html]Juan Cole is excellent on the comparisons between the Hassan murder and the marine killing the prisoner incident.
To compare them to the murderous thugs who [murdered] CARE worker Margaret Hassan, . . . is frankly monstrous. The multinational forces are soldiers fighting a war in which they are targetting combatants and sometimes accidentally killing innocents. The hostage-takers are terrorists deliberately killing innocents. It is simply not the same thing.
But I believe this also is true:
Some of my readers still want good guys and bad guys, white hats and black hats. That's not the way the world is. It is often grey, and very bleak.
Arabs ain't wonderful. Nor are we Americans (or Aussies).
I have some beach front property for sale on Mars.
Sorry, my friend but that is simply lame.
I have coffee to sell in Chicago.
Frankly, I think these discussions are rapidly becoming pointless. The predominant opinion seems to be that Arabs are completely wonderful and could never do any wrong (despite all those airliner hijackings, murders, kidnappings and other assorted abuses all throughout the 1970s and 1980s -- directed at Westerners [nevermind the bombings in the 1990s or what followed])...it's only the U.S. which does wrong.
Seems like lopsided thinking to me.
Cindy, please quote me.
Where in this thread did ANY ONE say Arabs are wonderful?
Mosul is the BIG story.
Police defect in mass droves. Insurgents occupy entire police stations, looting and burning. And steakling American made body armor for the insurgents to use.
24 hours later, we re-capture all the police stations and say "See, we are winning. We re-captured the police stations!"
*I have questions for Bill White, DonPanic and dickbill:
The Arab media biases don't bother you?
Or do you believe the Arab media has no biases?
Or do you think it's "okay"/doesn't matter if they have biases because Western journalism has its biases as well?
It's "okay" for the Arab media to be quiet [silence gives assent] about the genocide ocurring in Sudan (Arab Islamicists butchering helpless black African Sudanese)?
--Cindy
I see the Arab press as a symptom of our larger failure to communicate. Its like the canary in the coal mine.
We have seen how Europeans and Americans can use the same word - - "freedom" - - yet mean very different things by it. OUR inability to grasp that words and meanings may not correspond prevents communication.
On Hassan's death, where should the outrage be? If I were a moderate Jordanian, my outrage would be against the Americans for failing to provide sufficient security to prevent kidnappings in braod daylight.
An analogy:
A school security guard is watching a playground and falls asleep. A pervert enters the playground and kidnaps a child.
Where should the outrage lie?
With the pervert? Of course. But Shaun would have that outrage replace the outrage at the sleeping guard.
Margaret Hassan died because America broke Iraq and has not fixed it yet.

18 months ago? Send 300,000 soldiers to remove Saddam.
No looting. Secure 100% of shoulder fired SAM missiles. Secure 100% of Iraqi explosives. Not 95% and claim "Job well done."Not even, don't really agree, I insist on political preparation. If Us administration had recruited and trained Irakis before the attack to create a body of officers, then turned iraki army and police forces with $$$$$$$$ to the US side, they would have done the security job. The recruitment campaign should have started immediatly with all captured soldiers and policemen.
Or may be you're right if the additionnal task force was to bring and deal food and goods supply to Irakis, to prove US good will at populations. The military power engaged was largely enough for the military task.
I agree with you. Before the war I posted many the same ideas right here and said removing Saddam was a mistake no matter how much the evil bastard "deserved" it.
But, if there was no avoiding war, to send in too few soldiers to assure security makes the situation worse.
I believe you called for 500,000 troops and a trillion dollar budget for Iraq because you knew they were impossible figures, not because you believed it was necessary.
Shaun, don't order a meal if you cannot pay the bill.
George Bush has attempted the most audacious program of nation-building the world has ever seen, on the cheap.
True indeed. The big question is whether capital punishment is primarily revenge or primarily justice.
Justice is the ideal to which we must aspire, not something we are "ever" qualified to measure or dispense.
= = =
If the current system fails to protect society (releasing dangerous criminals) then the system is flawed and the death penalty becomes necessary due to our own prior failures and weakness.
Tell me the death penalty is something we need BECAUSE all of us are flawed creatures (all of us, police and judges and legislators included)and I will say, "Well, okay in limited circumstances, the fewer the better, execution may be the lesser evil of the options presented, but its still evil."
Tell me that execution brings a society closer to justice and I will fight relentlessly.

I think that all arguments about the number of troops needed to create democracy by means of weapons are wrong, Bill.
Today? Yes absolutely I agree.
18 months ago? Send 300,000 soldiers to remove Saddam.
No looting. Secure 100% of shoulder fired SAM missiles. Secure 100% of Iraqi explosives. Not 95% and claim "Job well done."
Awe and intimidate and then give the keys of Iraq to al-Sistani and return every soldier to America saying mission accomplished AFTER last US soldier returns home.
= = =
Today? I agree with you DomPanic.
FUBAR with little hope for recovery. Still al-Sistani is the most credible and respected leader the Iraqi people have. Give him the keys to the country, not our puppets.
More calmly now. :;):
If the United States cannot protect people like Margaret Hassan from being kidnapped in broad daylight in Baghdad, that means we are losing the battle to provide the security that is needed to allow the rebuilding of Iraq.
When was the Saddam regime removed? How long ago?
Fallajuh should have been cleaned out six months ago or even earlier. Sadr should be in custody.
Playing "Emperor's News Clothes" and demanding that the press say "all is well" won't help the situation.
